Info & Help: looking for... The original Latin American Spanish dubbings — Page 3

One thing I have noticed is that in the first source, when Leia and Luke escape from the troopers and close the door, you can hear the english and spanish language at the same time (1:25:30 and 1:25:45). But in your new sync with the Team negative1 reels, this doesn't happen.

In the Empire Strike Back happen the same in some parts with the Spanish dubbing.

Interesting.  May have been an artifact of how those sources were synced.  Glad it's gone in the new version--no idea if something similar will ever be possible for Empire.

I suppose we could ask roback214 about his upstream source for our Empire track.  Not sure if he synced it himself of if he got it roughly as-is.  I suppose it's possible there are raw unsynced sources somewhere.

Okay, I PM'd roback214, maybe we'll get lucky.  What are the times for these problems in Empire?

In The Empire Strikes Back only happens in a few parts: 0:25:17, 0:33:08 and 0:55:11 to 0:55:22 (Obi-Wan voice only).

Well it looks like we do have an alternate source, but it's partial.  If it overlaps with the bad areas and blends well, we may be able to do something.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and keep posting times if you find any more, even minor problems.  Not knowing Spanish, I rarely listen very closely to the dialogue itself, and would easily miss problems like this.

There is other one, but is different. In the scene when Han Solo is tortured and Lando hears his screams, there is only silence (1:29:48).

and finally, we have to replace 'han shoots greedo'

Does anyone know if this particular lead is still being pursued?  'cause we're only about 55 seconds short of the hands-down best-sounding Star Wars dub ever.

(55 seconds of film sure sounds a lot shorter than 90 feet of film, doesn't it?)

Just to post a status update, roback214 is my source for everything regarding ESB Spanish audio, and he's been offline for a while. So there'll likely be nothing to report on this front until he returns.

He told me a few days ago that he have another ESB source in great quality, but it's a tv recording.

Leoj found a new source for the American Spanish ESB dub.  Not as good-quality overall as the track from roback214, but good enough to patch over the bad areas he described earlier (with the help of the isolated score to help the music blend more seamlessly).  FWIW, the missing scream is just how it was on this dub, so I just patched over the areas where the English audio was overlaid.

So we now have a patched-up ESB track (mostly the same as the original, just a few seconds altered) that sounds pretty much great.  PM me if you're interested.

Along with our English language preview of Reel 1, we are hoping to include the Spanish Stereo track with it also.

Yeah! Thank you, Team Negative1.

I have a question. The Han-Greedo scene in english will be patched with the other source in spanish? CatBus did a wonderful job replacing the english part a few months ago.

Yes, we will be consulting with Catbus, or anyone else, that knows Spanish, to check our previews for the movie.

So, I'm not clear, do you have a better source for the Han-Greedo bit?  Because, if so, this is fantastic!

No, we were going to get it from you, Catbus.

Also, we need to find the Spanish Crawl, and figure out a way to integrate that also, in a dedicated Spanish Version possibly. Most likely, the crawl would be an extra, just like the 81 crawl also.

Ah, too bad.  I'll find it and send you a link to what I have.

We are working on syncing the soundtrack. So far the first reel is done, sounds great.

We’ve checked out all the reels, and the synchronizing sounds great.

We don’t have the Spanish crawl just yet, so we will keep looking for that.

Thanks to lusho720, we have a new source for the Han-Greedo scene. It’s also an old VHS capture with some muffling, but the quality is good, considering. In its current state, it’s not much different than what we have now, but I think it may respond better to attempts to un-muffle the audio, because it hasn’t already been processed like the other track. We’ll see.

If anyone has any experience un-muffling old VHS tapes, let me know. I’m brand new to this.

EDIT: I think this will result in a marginal improvement. I was able to do a spectrum analysis on the 35mm audio and equivalent section of VHS audio, generate a custom EQ to match, and it comes out still pretty muffled but without the boomy bass of the original VHS section (the 35mm track is a little treble-heavy due to lack of Dolby NR, and that hasn’t changed). So compared with the way it was before, the quality still drops but the EQ matches better. I think that’s a good thing. I’ll give it some more time for listening and correction attempts before I make the call to upload it or not.

I’ve decided to update my “official” copy of the Latino Star Wars dub using the new VHS capture, and I’ll be providing updates in the usual places. Do not expect a miraculous change. The only audio changed at all is the ~1 minute Han-Greedo scene (VHS source), everything else is identical (35mm source). The new audio, like the old audio, is still a VHS capture, this time from a tape so old that other parts of it were completely unusable, but with this bit fortunately surviving.

So, getting rid of the muffling and general lo-fi sound during this scene was never really in the cards. However, I do feel that the new audio blends slightly better with the surrounding audio now (mostly EQ and noise floor differences), and is definitely better… just not as much better as I’d like it to be. Maybe we’ll get another 35mm reel with the Latino dub someday. Until then, this version may have to suffice.
