Mission: to restore Minority Report color grading.

Video sources: Blu-ray, DVD.

Audio sources: Blu-ray, DVD.

Subtitles sources: Blu-ray, DVD.

Project info:

“Minority Report” Blu-ray has a very natural color grading… a bit too much natural, for a sci-fi movie like this. The DVD has a different color palette, colder in most scenes, but sometimes more colorful than the Blu-ray.

So the Blu-ray will be regraded using the DVD as color reference.

Some references about colors:

<div>

<div>For Minority Report, Spielberg once again allocated the skills of Janusz Kaminski, a rather ingenious Cinematographer who knows how to put DVD’s capabilities to the test. Minority Report is not a very colorful film, and is in fact quite the opposite. The look is hard, drab and cold.

I would say that grain is a problem, but the grain visible is obviously a product of the bleach-bypass process used to achieve the film’s amazing look.</div>

</div>

http://www.dvdactive.com/reviews/dvd/minority-report2.html (about DVD)

<div>

<div>Kaminski’s most interesting trick, however, was to desaturate and mute the film’s colors by employing a “bleach bypass” system. Normally in negative processing, the film emulsion is bleached. By skipping this step, the film ends up looking like a simultaneous color and black-and-white image, resulting in increased grain and contrast. Kaminski said, “The process pulled about 40 percent of the color out of the image, but we worked to get that back in by adding more color to the lights. Overall, the image has a bleached-out quality with deep shadows and blown highlights.”</div>

<div>

<div>The grading process began with Levinson matching an answer print. The answer print consisted of individual reels that Steven Spielberg had selected as best representing how he wanted the movie to be seen. At that point, Janusz Kaminski came in to work with Levinson. The grading was done while viewing the 4K files rather than a lower resolution proxy.
Steven Spielberg was also closely involved in the remastering and the resulting HDCAM-SR master represents how the creative team want the movie to be seen by viewers today.</div>

Many CM'ed images are almost perfect, while few must be corrected; probably I'll use another script to regrade those shots.

Waitaminute, the blu-ray of minority report removed the color push and goes for a more natural color palette? This shocks me because I am so used to the opposite with old movies on blu-ray at this point.

 No kidding. It's almost as if someone accidentally turned off the filters layer.

 Can I find out who his someone is? I'd like to thank them personally, lol.

I'd also like to hire them to re-restore every blu-ray of every movie that's been re-color timed and give them back their original color.

Added some reference about color grading of DVD and BD on the first post; plus, test covers - outside and inside, plus disc label.

Just finished the first conversion using ColourMatch: after a brief look, it seems almost all scenes are artifacts free; the few I found could be easily fixed using another version - that, unluckily, works only for few hundred frames.

Some others, that are not a bit too different from DVD, could be fixed using another color matching script; further testing are needed, though.

Now I go to sleep; I will stay away from my main PC for two days, so no project updates until monday.

Best of luck on your project but honestly I think the Blu-Ray colours are superior.

Glad someone did this I feel like the only Bleach Bypass/ENR/Silver Retention supporter alive at times.

The DVD was not correct tho

Well I prefer the Bluray timing to be honest :-)

 Yeah, for once, they did just the opposite, and made the color timing more natural for the blu-ray. That's a switch, huh? Personally, this is how I prefer it - I always prefer natural skin tones and colors. I hate when director's add all kinds of crazy color tints to films. So even though I'm not too interested in this particular project, I will say that as usual the colormatch work being done here is amazing! In this case I prefer the blu-ray colors though.

 Why? Not trying to be mean, just curious. The bleach bypass and unnatural colors make the film look unique and noir like. They help establish the tone of the film (and the bluray colors are not even close to natural, just different.) Lots of films, even old ones, use color grading extensively.

 I understand and completely agree. However, terms like "setting a tone" and more importantly, "Unique" are thrown out the window when EVERY....MOVIE....LOOKS....THE SAME.

Ah.  I'm with you for certain films, but I've always liked the look of Minority Report. Fits perfectly with that vision of the future. Bleak and washed out.

 Certain films are fine. The Matrix, O Brother, Where Art Thou, Terminator 1 and 2, all perfectly fine. However, when every other director is doing it, it loses all it's meaning, and just comes off as extremely cheap. My main problem isn't with modern movies doing it, it's with the Hollywood re-visioning the old films and re-grading the blu-rays so that they look like modern movies.

I recently read an article that said that 70% of the silent movies are lost forever. I fear in another 30-50 years we'll be seeing another article saying that the original prints and negatives of old films are gone and we're stuck with every color movie from the 50s to the present all looking teal.

I hate this trend so much. Reading the "Movies with wrong color grading" thread depresses me.

Even if BD color grading seems OK - as it has more natural colors - I think the colder palette used on DVD is better for this kind of movies, and specifically is perfect for this title.

The DVD was not correct tho

It seems you are not the only one... (^^,)

Do you have any suggestion about finding the correct one? HDTV maybe? Because if there is another, better source to use as color reference, I'd like to know. Thanks for your advice.

I have all the soundtracks available; but, as german and french are only AC3, I'd like to know if someone could provide the DTS ones from BD, just to have all soundtrack with the same quality.

Was cinema DTS located for this one?  Talk about a track that ROCKED in the theatre.  I ran this in 35mm, but can't remember which was more "correct": the Blu-ray or DVD.  I have the Blu-ray and remember it looking terrific though.

“Alright twinkle-toes, what’s your exit strategy?”

Blu-ray has the english DTS-HD MA soundtrack; don't know if the Cinema DTS one is available, I'm going to ask for it in the proper thread!
