It's not a remake, it's a different adaptation (it's a pet peeve of mine, because there's a colossal difference between these two things). And it's hardly even "the original" (not the first time the Russians tried adapting Solaris, either).

Go read the novel. It's heavy, cerebral stuff, but it's worth it. Just be sure to avoid the first translation (they translated the French version and the result is supposedly wretched), and look for the recently done second.
