Info: OT Bootleg DVDs — Page 75

It's all quite surreal when you take into account the GL quote on the OT.com frontpage. Colorizing a B&W movie, while atrocious, is arguably not as bad as changing dialogue, adding new scenes, and replacing one actor with another. Lucas has apparently gotten over his prior fear of colorizing, because, in addition to everything else "special" about the new DVDs, he's super-colorized his own work. Weird. I should buy him the new colorized Three Stooges DVDs for Christmas.

And digitally add in more stooges.

How did you goof on the brightness? Does it look too dark or too light?

Too dark.

We are dealing with a totally dedicated fan here and IT may take some time but I'm SO sure that we will be PLEASE with this next one !!!!!!!!!!

Mebejedi, did you find Video Essentiuals to be any help to you?

Did I say "screenie"...?

Anyway, I'll DL it and check it out. I usually like DVDs a little on the dark side as opposed to lighter.

Oh, and Rik, the BALANCE XviD is outta whack -- the video is 2.05:1 when it should be 1.78:1 unless you got rid of the black bars, when it would be 2.35:1 (which you couldn't since the subs are in there). Also the brightness is way too high since we're getting into that here.

I got it during the middle of this transfer. I will definitely use it for the anamorphic transfer.

It would appear that the 'super colorisation' is peculiar to the Region1 DVD, the R4 set doesn't have it "Set to Whore".
Comparing to some film cels the colour on the R4 set is pretty close to the film.

Also, calibrate your TV - there is a colour control on it - well a color control and a 'tint' control on those crappy NTSC sets

Can someone give us screenshot comparisons of R1's Leia the Whore vs. the R4 Leia? I'm curious about this.

If I am not mistaken, I believe the whole "leia looks like a whore" comments are coming from the comparison pics I posted a few pages back... somewhere in the 70s.

The comparison pics showed the new 2004 release vs MeBeJedi, TR47 and Dr Gonzo.

Some of the pics made Leia look like a whore with a lot of makeup... it was due to the increased "red" look in the color.

I would look back at the comps but my wife is calling me for Spanish class... gotta go

Man, for some reason I am so in the mood to watch that movie (SpaceBalls)

Of course it's due to increased red color. Which is bad. Because it's quite oversaturated. But Laserman says that the R4 release isn't poorly color-corrected like the R1 NTSC release is, which makes me suspect that the PAL versions are much better than NTSC. Which makes me want a multi-region DVD player, in addition to getting the Japanese uncut Kill Bill V1 DVD...

I´ve watched the PAL versions and they´ve got oversaturated colors and are too dark. I had to fiddle with my picture setting for a while before getting something I was happy with. By then I had upped the brightness too much and put the color levels way to low for any of my other movies to look normal. I basicly had set my picture settings to a "universal" template and I made those setting based on some of the best refrence quality DVD releases available. Those 2004 Star Wars DVD´s are just badly calibrated IMO. Everything is just too darn colorful and the darkness is overwhelming. What a rushjob. And all this to make the OT look more like the PT.

That's true. Between the TV and the DVD player you can make stuff look almost however you want.

If only the TV had a "Jedi Rocks" filter on it...

BTW, BentMyWookie - I like your sig.

EDIT: This was supposed to be in response to Laserman's R1 vs R4 comment.

Yeah, I know...double post.

Just read a fairly glowing review of the new DVD set on MSNBC:

"...he has tweaked some of the story beats to better mesh with later “Star Wars” incarnations, including the insertion of current-day actors. This will mean little to casual viewers, but is certain to set the geeks atwitter."

Unless I am mistaken, R4 is NTSC. My in-laws are from Mexico so a lot of the DVDs they send me are either R4 or Region "1 y 4" and they are NTSC. Usually the main difference between what they get there in R4 and what we get in the states in R1 is that we cover English and French in NTSC where they cover English, Spanish and Portugese in NTSC.

I'll have to see if my brother-in-law picked up the set to see what he thinks.

As for getting a multi-region DVD player... your typical $20 to $40 DVD Player can easily be made multi-region by hacking via the remote. You might have a multi-region DVD Player at home already and don't realize it. The big guys like Toshiba and Sony use hard-wired region coding in their computer chips but the cheap guys usually just use codes keyed into "secret" menus to change the region so they can make one model and sell it everywhere. Go to VideoHelp.com and look up your player(s) to see what you can do.

Do yourself a favor and hack your player or buy a cheap player that can easily be hacked for multi-region..... I know you like "Army of Darkness"... you really need to get the R3 MGM release... it is the best there is

Not as far as I'm concerned. Here in Australia we are Region 4 and proudly PAL.

And I have to agree with Laserman, the Australian release is no where near as dark or whore lookin as what the pics of Region 1 seem. If I get time I'll post some screen caps.

Hmm...I've got a Toshiba SD-1800 in me room...I'll see what I can do with it...

Ah. I've been there and it seems

There's nothing we could do except to buy another DVD player...You can thank Hollywood for that...

Thanks for clearing that up... I have always wondered why the DVDs my in-laws send me are listed as Region "1 y 4" (1 and 4) but are NTSC. I know that other than "1 and 4" they also have just R4 discs in Mexico so that means that their DVD Players are mostly multi-region with NTSC and PAL capabilities.

Good to know

Yeah, the only thing to do with a Toshiba is to buy a mod-chip. My advice to you is to take advantage of the rediculously low prices you will find on cheap DVD Players around Thanksgiving. I pick up a new player every Thanksgiving and just keep it in the box in case anyone ever wants it. I just gave my brother a $20 DVD Player from Best Buy that could easily be hacked to multi-region, could play MP3s, WMA and JPEGs and was Progressive Scan. Keep a look out and check VideoHelp for advice on buying.

I'm not so sure about that, based on this, which was posted in another thread (click the pics to toggle between R1 and R2)
