Chapter 31: Meeting one of the old ones

I knew from my texts that Ossus was the third planet in the Adega system. The radiation was caused by a nearby supernova some 4000 years before. It was not this radiation, or the possible archeological possibilities related to the Clone Wars that was drawing me there. In fact, it was not really a thing, it was a being.
Ossus had been the Jedi Library world. The artifacts and stories of millennia of Jedi Knights had been held there, until the great Sith War. The intentional destruction of the nearby Cron system created the supernova that forced nearly all the jedi off. All except one. Jedi Master Ood Bnar, in an effort to preserve some artifacts, went through a natural metamorphosis, turning into a tree (of sorts). His roots covered the artifacts, and protected them from the supernova.
B0B and myself soon dropped out of hyperspace, and began to orbit Ossus. It was quite desolate, and it was easy to tell that from space. There were supposedly only a few beings on the planet, excluding Ood Bnar. I hoped I would not run into them, and if I did, that they understood basic.
Slowly, I scanned the planet. Sorting out trees would be hard, but a cache underneath one seemed not difficult to find. It was slow going, but eventually I found what I was looking for, a mass of metal under a tree that registered (only in a focused scan) a little different from the rest. No other lifeforms were present. This is where I set down.
The sky was filled with clouds and electrical discharges, not quite like lightning. I made my way the few hundred feet from where I had set down to the tree. It stood alone, apart from other trees. A small portable scanner confirmed to me that this was the Jedi Master I sought. I stood before the tree and began to speak.
“Jedi Master Ood Bnar, I am a traveler from afar. Unlike the vast majority of the galaxy, I know who you are and why you are here on Ossus. I come before you with a request. The Sith have taken control of the galaxy, and rule it with an iron fist. In time they will be defeated, but until that time all people who believe in what is good are in danger. My request is to borrow one of the ancient lightsabers you protect under your roots. I wish to help to remove this evil from its place of power.”
I stood and waited, hoping that the massive tree-Jedi would respond. After several minutes, I heard the cracking of the ground, and as I looked, I saw 2 roots begin to pull apart. I slowly moved forward, and looked in. Reaching in, I grasped for one of the precious cylinders. Pulling it out, I stopped and starred at it for a minute. I then moved my arm to my side, and looked back up at the Jedi Master.
“Thank you. I will not betray your trust. According to what I know, part of your destiny is to protect those artifacts until another jedi comes for them, to begin a rebuilding of the Jedi Order. I am sorry to say I am not him. But, I can tell you that he will come within the next 12 standard years. He is also the one who will defeat the Sith.”
With that, I began to walk away. I could hear the roots begin to work their way back into place overtop of the stockpile of lightsabers.
Before arriving at my ship, I decided to inspect the weapon. I found the activation stud, and pressed it. I heard the all too familiar hum, and paused as I saw a bluish blade form. It grew to about 3 feet, and stopped. I moved it through the air a little, and then started to look at the other controls. There appeared to be one toggle switch and a knob switch. As I rotated the latter, I saw the blade shorten, then lengthen. I then flipped the toggle, and I could see nothing happen. I tried something. I flipped the switch back, and attempted to cut a chunk of grass out of the ground. I was successful. Then I flipped the switch, and repeated the action. This time, nothing. I determined that this must be some kind of practice mode, or intensity setting. By placing the lightsaber in practice mode, one would not risk cutting off a limb by making a mistake. Its use could also be for a weapon. By changing the intensity of the blade in mid-fight, you could force your opponent to swing and lose balance expecting a parry, leaving you open for the strike.
I was satisfied at that point, so I boarded my ship and left.
