After some business, I returned to the White House. The President had returned, with Captain Briera. They appeared to have enjoyed the game. Both had sat down for a drink when I made my announcement, or perhaps I should call it, my request.
“Captain, I have a request. It’s a big one, and I feel that its being granted would be very important for the relations of our world with the Empire.
Take me with you.
Sure, you or diplomats can tell us about your Empire, but the best way to learn, is to do. I would like to learn about the Empire and how it works, so I’d like to see it first hand.”
Briera seemed surprised by the request. He thought for a moment.
“I have to honestly say I would have some reservations about a civilian being on board a ship of the Imperial Navy, but I’m sure something can be worked out. Does your President have any problems with the idea?”
I turned to the President.
“It is a wise idea to learn more about the Empire. You may go, but I ask that you be back if and when any Imperial ambassadors arrive so you can help the world in negotiating.”
I assured the President that I would return to do so. I had already packed some bags with cloths (no Star Wars books) and picked up my laptop. I was ready to go as soon as the Captain wanted to go.
And my timing could not have been better. The Imperial fleet had been recalled, and this was the last day they could stay. I left with the Captain on the Presidential helicopter, and we headed to the clearing for the last time. I was feeling very nervous as I walked up the ramp into the belly of the Lambda Shuttle that had come down to get us, but it was a good nervous. I had made something of myself on my world. Now was my chance to do the same to the galaxy.
