Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD** — Page 97

How about something like Ultima 4?

It's a post-war galaxy, and Luke has quietly gathered some disciples over the years. They set out on a quest to do good throughout the galaxy, hoping to become an inspiration to the people and make the mantle of Jedi mean something again.

 I love that idea!

It's similar to mine, which was just Luke amassing an order of force-sensitive beings, while a loyalist group pursued him.

So, yeah. I'm in support. It reminds me of the Avatar: The Last Airbender sequel comics. They don't have the same monumental threat as the series, but they're still compelling and enjoyable stories in their own right. Maybe that's the sort of change of pace we need. Focus more on the peaceful side of being a Jedi knight. No prophecy or any of that.

I'm definitely in support.

 Of my outline?

No. It's incomplete and really more of a theory for how it could go. I only ever came up with one character for it.

She was Jana Skrah, the daughter of a Jedi who had 'made it' with her mother for the scourge. She grew up in a terrible backwater outer-rim world, and thus was hardened by the environment. Her mother died at age 13, so she also learned to use her powers to help her fend for herself. When Luke first finds her, she's in a bar, sloppy drunk and using her powers to negotiate the price of the drinks she's bought.

Am I the only one who's afraid of Abrams becoming all-powerful like Lucas was?

No.  Kathleen Kennedy is all powerful like Lucas.

Or more likely who ever heads up Disney, and also the shareholders of Walt Disney company.

The Bean counters and money bags are all powerful.  Lucas was the artist as well as chairman of the board.  The days of the artist with a singular vision are over.  Its time for the corporation to make a watered down product as mainstream as possible for the masses.

Even the though they will be called LUCASFILMS they are not Lucasfilms.  He is not making them.  Disney bought the trademark and will use it confusing people.

At this point, I could care less. If Abrams fucks the ST up, I can choose to ignore it, just like I ignore the PT, the SE, and the parts of the EU I don't like. Things would go on as they were before.

This.  It's terrible that it has come to this, but 16 years of pummeling me with terrible Star Wars movies has definitely led to a life of waiting six months after something Star Warsy comes out and seeing what the non-PT/SE fans say about it before committing to watching it.

All we know if he is a work for hire director.

I fully expect he won't be involved with directing or writing either one of the sequels, i could be wrong but i see as many as three directors on the sequel trilogy like the original.

If he ends up directing all three i would be really surprised.

I also would not be surprised if different writers are on all three unless they rope Kasdan into writing all three films.

I would think Abram's situation is more like Kershner's, and hopefully not like Marquand's.

Aren't you forgetting Lucas has lent his name to films he barely had any involvement in?

The last person Disney bean counters gave that much free reign to was the director of John Carter.  Between that and The Lone Ranger the studio lost a billion dollars.

Empire was a nightmare for Lucas three times the shooting schedule and budget he would have wanted.

Lucas would have shot it dirty and quick with few if any retakes or reshoots and would have had more camera coverage, similar to how Jedi and Star Wars were made.   And assembled the film in editing.  He would have not done slow character moments, long setups , or encouraged good acting.

I am sure other than huge inflation the weather In Finse was not on Kershner's side.  Still Lucas was on the hook with the bank loan and that cannot be fun even if Empire unlike Spielberg's 1941 made a big profit.

Even after all the compromises on Jedi to keep the budget down it still cost far more than Lucas would have liked.    But the time he made Phantom Menace and it cost  more than double what Jedi cost did he feel different i don't know.

Wasn't Phantom Menace budgeted at 95 million or something?

The difference here though, despite any of our personal tastes, is that Abrams is approaching this project with an outsiders perspective.  This something that Lucas never had the ability to do, and that is (in my opinion) the biggest thing that went wrong with the prequels.

After years of being on the inside, Lucas had no understanding of what made Star Wars important in the first place.  I'm not accusing him of trying to sell toys as many of us like to do, but the cultural marketing of Star Wars is what influenced Lucas' decision making.  For example, Darth Vader was only a larger than life character to the audience, not to the other characters in that world.  But Lucas didn't understand that.  And that resulted in a story that focused on Anakin/Vader being presented as this fallen Christ-like figure.  Or perhaps look at the Jedi and their trusty weaponry.  The marketability of that iconography certainly influenced Lucas in making the Jedi being a huge focus, and such constant use of Lightsabers, scene after scene.  There are countless examples like these, and although that "cultural marketing" perspective may not have been his sole influence, it's still an obvious factor.

Now don't get me wrong, there are definitely certain fans out there who love the prequels, some of whom may only see Star Wars for its superficial imagery, and if they had any say in Lucas' plan, they would have made very similar decisions.  But a successful filmmaker who understand the history of both Star Wars as well as film history in general, will be far more capable of understanding what makes Star Wars interesting and engaging.

I'm not putting my full faith in Abrams just yet, but I am optimistic about what he'll be able to pull off.  You may not like his other movies, his aesthetic style, his interpretation of the Star Trek universe, etc, but at the very least, he always gets engaging performances from his cast, so we're already improving upon the prequels.

Madonna at least had some musical talent back in the day. I'm sure Miley's only talent is giving her daddy's bank account a blowjob.
