The Musician's Thread

I figure since everybody is a creative bunch, some of you must play instruments. This thread will be a place to talk about what instrument you play, how long you've played, why you play, and even for those who might do the occasional show. You can talk about the different gear you own, or wish to own. What musicians influence your style and what not.

You can even talk about horrible experiences either in bands, band, solo performances, or orchestra.

I play a handful of different instruments, some I'm good at, others I am horrible at. Guitar has been my main instrument, and I play harmonica, trumpet, sing.

I took up trumpet, because my Junior High band wouldn't allow guitars. Fast forward 2 years to High School, and they had 3 guitarists, go figure. I never got good at trumpet though, I could play simple songs, and that was it.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

I play the guitar, but since I'm completely self-taught I'm not terribly good at it. Let's add to that me being left-handed, and almost never practising. In fact, at first I had a 12 string classical guitar, and I learned to play left handed. Then my uncle gave me a les paul replica for my birthday, so I had to unlearn and relearn how to play right handed because you can't "flip" an electric guitar as easily as you can a classical.

The 12 string is out of commission, since I'm an idiot and I put steel strings instead of nylon, therefore bending the neck to the point that it now looks more like a cello than a guitar.

The fake les paul is broken too, because I'm an idiot and one day I left it standing without support against my wardrobe. Next thing I know, I'm in the kitchen and I hear a loud *kabong*! The neck is totally busted now, I have no idea how much money will be needed to fix it.

I kinda play the keyboards, a few basic chords, still terrible at it.

My main shtick is singing. I have decent pipes, though -again- I'm an idiot and a few times I've blown them trying to sing slightly out of my range.

This was made with a crappy headset mic, I found the instrumental on Youtube (it has since been taken down).

This one I'd call a proto-demo, it was an experiment in multitracking, I completely fucked up the last part. All instrument tracks are mine, the drums were sequenced (I forgot the name of the program) the bass and synth parts I played with my keyboard, and the guitar is my fake les plugged straight into the mic input.

All of this was done on an old Hp laptop with Audacity.

I don't have a whole lot of musical experience, but I've been playing the clarinet for a couple years. Like Leonardo, my main musical talent is singing. I sang soprano in a school choir (which was actually very good) when I was in elementary school. I haven't been in any singing groups since, but I can still sing (though I'm a bass rather than a soprano now).

I play the piano and string bass.

I’m just here because I’m driving tonight.

School tried to force me to learn to play the recorder. I took to it like a fish to air.

I never liked recorders. I understand.

I always wanted to play an instrument, but nobody is here to teach me, and I have zero dollars to invest.

I refuse to use synthetic software or learn on the internet. I want a human being sitting beside me at the piano.

You should take up harmonica. It doesn't take much to learn. Simple draw and blocking practice, and you'll get good fast. It's truly the fastest instrument I know of to learn. Now to tear it up, it takes a lot of work, but yeah.

I play guitar and prefer classic country music and bluegrass.

My biggest influences are Lefty Frizzell, Hank Williams, George Jones, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Ernest Tubb. I am also heavily influenced by 50's & 60's rock and roll; Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, and Johnny Rivers.

I own several guitars. 1997 Martin D-42 Custom, 1998 Martin D-28, 1999 Martin HD-28, 1979 Yamaha FG-350W, 1982 Yamaha FG-335II, 1984 Guild D-25, 1993 Epiphone PR-5E, 1993 Goya G-300 (First Guitar), 1978 Takemine F-340 "Martin Lawsuit Model", 1982 Sigma D-28. A couple electrics, which I hardly play, and an old Squire bass guitar in sunburst.

When I was younger, I used to play all over the central Texas area with friends and other musicians. However, a growing family life and an unforgiving career have really knocked me down to simply playing for my kids or family on special occasions.
