SE Changes

I thougt this would be the better place to put this and not in general discussion.

Here's my thoughts on each change in the SW Trilogy SE, as http://www.theforce.net/swse/ lists them. It's the most complete listing I could find.

- GOOD: I actually quite like this change. I just think it looks cooler.
- BAD: Completely unnecessary. The original scene worked perfectly.
- BAD: See above.
- GOOD (referring to general landspeeder shots): I never liked the damn green glob.
- BAD: Why is smoke coming from the chimney when he lives on a planet that's hot as hell?
- GOOD: Kinda nice to see the Death Star move.
- BAD (General Mos Eisley changes): The near-ghost-town feel was so much more atmospheric...
- MEH: Good in that the original shot sucked, bad because those "scurriers" are stupid...
- BAD (general Cantina changes): Mainly the replacement of Wolfman while Penis-Mouth still remains...
- HORRIBLY WRONG AND SHITTY: Do I even need to say why? The scene lost its entire reason for being when this happened....
- BAD: Everything in this scene was covered in the Greedo scene. Plus not seeing Jabba till Jedi was much cooler. Plus the CGI sucked and still (2004) sucks.
- BAD: Overuse of CGI.
- BAD: The update of the explosion was OK, but the Praxis ring was a bad idea IMHO.
- UNDECIDED: I kinda like both versions...
- BAD (thrusters): Overuse of CGI again...
- UNDECIDED: Can't remember the original shot...
- GOOD: Gives him something to look at. Don't think there was anything before.
- GOOD: Much improved over the original. Has a more "earthy" feel.
- EXCELLENT: The single BEST CHANGE of any of the SE's! Makes his death (more) meaningful.
- BAD: Overuse of CGI...yet...again....
- BAD: Overuse of CGI...the old shot was fine...
- GOOD: Never liked the straight line before...
- GOOD (general DS attack changes): Much more exciting and tense than the original.
- BAD: See the destruction of Alderaan.
- GOOD: Never noticed this was a change...that's what every one should have been, at least seamless enough so if you'd never seen it before you wouldn't be able to tell.
- GOOD (JEJ gets credit): Why wasn't he credited before?

Well, that's it for now; later I'll post for ESB in this same thread and then ROTJ later on.

Mos Eisley sure as hell didn't look like wretched hive of scum and villainy - in fact, they made it look like a family destination in the SE!

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

It seems as if most of these changes are audio ones, so let's get to it.

- BAD: The old one had the whole "Jaws" thing going where they never showed it very well. Really cool and scary. But now....
- MEH ("Thanks, 3PO"): I actually got so used to this line that it scared me when I was re-watching the OT for the first time in a while that it wasn't there...
- MEH (smoke): Never noticed it...
- GOOD: But they could have at least made it consistent...
- BAD ("You're lucky ...."): I loved the "you didn't taste very good" line!
- GOOD (clearer dialogue): I could never hear it before!
- BAD: Unnecessary CGI, but I don't mind it too much.
- BOTH: Good because Cloud City needed it, bad because it REALLY overused some CGI...
- BAD: City didn't really need to be opened up IMHO.
- BAD: WTF? I cant even hear her (Leia) now...
- BAD (during announcement): Just pointless.
- GOOD AND HORRIBLE: Good in that he looks solid now, bad because of the F'N SCREAM! (fixed in the 04 DVD)
- NEUTRAL: What's the big deal over "Alert my star destroyer..."?
- BAD: George, we don't need to see everything in the world that happens, especially when it interrupts the flow of the movie.
- GOOD (see ANH): Funny that he wasn't given credit theatrically but was on video...hehe...

That wraps up Empire. I'll have Jedi up later.

So what are they trying to say? When your Jedi spirit appears, it only looks like it does BEFORE you become a backstabbing bastard? I am not a hardcore fanboy of all this, just a more than interested viewer, but does this just seem like a shameless plug for Episode III: Kill all the motherf#@in' Jedi...twice?

The "Alert My Star Destroyer..." line sounds nothing like Vader (it wasn't James Earl Jones...). You'e forgetting the DVD changes, but they're minimal compared to the SE so thats ok. Anyway, the worst change IMO was changing Vader's "ARGGGHH!!!" when he's knocked off the edge of the Carbon Freezing Chamber to "EHHH!!!". It just sounds stupid, especially since Vader makes the same sound like 15 seconds before. You can still hear the "ARGGGHH!!!" when Vader gets pissed right before he cuts of Luke's hand, but it sounded better when he fell. Now it sounds like some old man yelling "DAMN!!!"

Yes, but that's also what the whole SW Trilogy DVD Bonus Disc is...

I didn't really think it was that big of a deal to include it, especially since I forgot all about it until I was reading the list.

I'm going to a high school football game now so I'll be back with Jedi in the morning.

--EDIT--

BTW, I meant the "AARGH!" vs "UUH!" change, not the Star Destroyer change.

According to JEJ, it is him. Supposedly, it was recorded for the previous film. Also, the Death Star always rotated. It's even a continuity error, as they couldn't decide which way it should rotate(if at all). You missed the new docking bay 327. Also, JEJ getting credit was bad in my view. Jones specifically requested that he not be listed in the credits. He sees himself as a special effect. Adding him goes against his own wishes.
The general sound remix stunk(Chewies rifle in the detention block was the same as an AT-AT chin gun).

That's according to Ben Burtt..I really trust any of those jackasses. But there were several other changes you missed, but they were minimal. The alternate soundtracks for the films really pissed me off, epsecially Empire. Extra bits like 3PO's "There's nowhere to go" were alright, but the complete replacement of "You're lucky you don't taste very good" sucked.

Why do you fuck off on so many good changes.

They aren't good changes you jackass. I think we should digitally insert you into George Lucas' ass.

LOL LOL LOL LOL

Let's start a fund to get the CGI work done, and then include it as an OT DVDR Extra.

When people complain about changes that good it almost makes me glad that Lucas is doing what he is doing. I can by the film history arguement. It would be kind of nice to see what was state of the art for that time. I also can by the Greedo shoots first or dialog change arguement. But how in the love of god can you possibly think changes like the new wampa, cloud city, new dewbacks, new sarlacc, better ship takeoffs, and livly cities don't improve the scene. These changes vastly improved the movie. Argueing otherwise makes absolutly no sense.

Ash, that is a damn fine recap of the scenes and changes. Not that I agree with you 100% on all of them, but your points are well argued and I can respect that (but I do agree on quite a few of them).

Blatantly refusing points of view other than your own makes no sense either.

Anyway, on to ROTJ:

- BAD: Horrible (and horribly out of place) CGI and a crappy song do not improve crappy puppet-work and a good song. Interrupts the flow of the movie.
- BAD: At least they didn't show the Rancor. But I still think they shouldn't have even showed what was down there.
- BAD: Oh, great. They made Boba a womanizing clone now, did they?
- NEUTRAL: Pointless but unobtrusive.
- BAD: A beak? A BEAK?!?! I'm all for a couple more tentacles or animating the old ones better, but...a BEAK?!?!?!
- BAD: "It's all right. I can see a lot better," is a poor joke and substitute for the "It's all right. Trust me. Don't move," which fits better in the context of the tense sequence.
- GOOD: Ah...no more black R2-D2...in some shots....(consistency, LFL, consistency)
- BAD: Praxis again! WTF?
- BAD: The Empire as a whole wouldn't fall this fast, and would Bespin (sic?) care? NO!
- BAD: See above. And more of the city-expansion...ugh...
- BAD: Oh, look, it's a planet we've never seen before! What? Episode...one? Huh? Two more years, eh? Why the hell are they putting that in now?
- NEUTRAL (Luke&Wedge shot): Hm...didn't notice it...

Music Change: GOOD - As much as I liked Yub Nub (or Yub Yub), it didn't fit as an ending to the saga. This doesn't really either, I'd've rather seen something like the Force theme or something like that, but meh, this is better.

That's 13 good, 10 both/neutral/meh, and 29 bad...hmm...since one was counted good and bad (Luke's scream) those cancel each other out so that's 24% good, 56% bad and 20% neutral...which turns out to be 56% bad and 44% not bad...hmm....Lucasfilm, work on it...(actually that's a higher good percentage than I predicted when I started but still, if it's not 75%+ good, it's no good.

Jimbo, that's cool that u think the SE are better and that it enhances the films...but I just despise them the more I watch them. Arguing my point DOES make sense: I think the changes look dumb and make scenes awkward. Plus, I liked the original effects. I don't need to see pilots' heads moving and 360 degree shots to make the films good.

So perhaps my sticking you in George's ass comment makes no sense, but my argument sure as hell doesn't.

I wonder if someone could mix a "no-music" audio track that I could play around with for editing. It might be interesting to hack together a new end for ROTJ that doesn't have that yub-yub thing at the end, but that doesn't go so overboard like the SE ending.

ChainsawAsh, you used the 1997 version, right?

"Why!! Why don't you think exactly like I do!!!! How can I possibly be wrong on a subject that shouldn't have an incorrect answer!!!! Why can't you see that what I say goes!!!!! How dare you all have a contrasting opinion!!!!"

Jimbo, in all seriousness, that's what you sound like. For Pete's sake, grow up and realize that everyone one is different and there's nothing wrong with that. If you won't repect our opinions, leave, as we have no reason then to respect yours.

By the way, the ending to Rouge Squadron III - Rebel Strike featured the longer cut of the ending to RotJ, minus planets and ghosts, yet has Yub nub. Seems even the makers are with us, regardless of the Se shots troughout. Battle front is loaded with nothing but pan and scan SE shots, which I think was intentional.

That would be Jimbo.

Ricarleite - yeah the 97 versions. Later I might post my thoughts on the 04 versions, but probably not.
