I guess I always assumed that the Empire monitored transmissions. And while, in effect, this wouldnt prevent the transmission, it would reveal the location of the resistance (on both ends of the transmission). That seems pretty dangerous, especially considering the near functionality of the Death Star.

Just a thought.
