The Controversial Discussions Thread (Was "The Prejudice Discussion Thread" (Was "The Human Sexuality Discussion Thread" (Was "The Homosexuality Discussion Thread")))

This is a thread devoted primarily to the discussion of homosexuality. Anything pertaining to the subject -- be it moral, philosophical, theological, biological, psychological, etc -- goes. You can also discuss other forms of human sexuality if you wish.

I'll start the thread off by giving my own personal feelings on the subject.

Personally, I don't buy into the false dichotomy that homosexuality is either a choice or something that a person is born with. The causes of homosexuality in humans probably vary between individuals.

I don't believe that homosexuals can be reoriented into heterosexuals. Reparative therapy may cause patients with latent bisexually to develop heterosexual desires, but it won't cause them to lose their homosexual ones.

Due to my upbringing, I'll never be fully comfortable with homosexuality. I believe homosexuals have the right to live their lives the way they want to live them, though, and so I will do nothing to dissuade or hinder them from doing so.

Can we discuss masturbation here?

Masturbation is cool.

As far as morality goes, it's not even that important. Naturally having certain desires doesn't imply much if anything about the morality of acting on those desires, right or wrong.

It's not something I would personally do, or even wave a flag for. Let people make their own decisions. Christians, Jews, Muslims, etc. worry too much about what homosexuals are doing, when they should really be worrying about other things.

It's not my place to tell somebody what they can and can't do. I don't support it, but I cannot look down on somebody for what they do. I am a Christian, but I also am a human. Sure, most Christians like to single out the gays for what they do, but that's just not the Christian way. Many will sit and judge the gays, and they will turn around and lie, they'll be a glutton, they'll cheat, they'll even turn their back on the needy. All of those things are bad, but because being gay is so taboo to these people, they single it out, because it's something they don't personally do.

I've had many gay friends growing up, and I love them just the same. It is not my place to judge them.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Why do many women dress provocatively in church? Tight clothing showing legs below the knees can rile me.

Coupled with high heels.

It's almost as powerful as Daisy Duke shorts. Depending on the woman, of course, but even a 6 can elevate to an 8 like that.

By the way, how adult is this discussion? This forum is unmoderated, but it could suddenly become moderated.

 I worded it poorly.

What motivated this thread?

I think people are born homosexual or heterosexual but can exhibit behavior of the either orientation for various psychological reasons. I wish there weren't all the campaigns and insistence upon a monolithic "community" (a feeling not limited to this topic btw). When it comes to sexuality I don't think it necessary (I'm sure there is a better word) to indulge every errant thought one may or may not have. People should respect others but they do have the right to avoid associations they find unhealthy. Though I agree with xhonzi that it is better to have tolerance of those with different views. I've always been naturally tolerant (Warbler would be laughing were he able [a joke, Mr. Warbler]) and I find it unfortunate when people shun others for not being sufficiently supportive of their worldview.

The blue elephant in the room.

A person might have an endocrine condition that pre-disposes him to be a little more quick-tempered than the average Joe. If it is genetically based, he was born that way. If he decides that he doesn't like Arty and the next time he feels an angy impulse he's going to punch him, that's a choice. Todd might have a hormonal condition that pre-disposes him to be a little more risk-taking or find a little more stimulation in sexual contact. If it is genetically based, he was born that way. If he decides in his mind that the next time he feels an impulse he's going to ignore females and pursue a homosexual guy who is much easier to obtain, THAT...IS...A...CCHHOICEEEE!

When people are told that what they are is "wrong" it is natural for them to campaign, join communities, speak out, shun those who oppose them, etc.

I like cheese on toast but no one seems to care so there's no need to create a community for it.

Darth_ender suggested a thread devoted to this topic be created when discussion on the subject started cluttering up RicOlie_2's Catholicism thread.

Oops, I didn't get the point across very well.

A carnival geek might have been born with a hightened response to risk-taking behavior (rush of adrinalin?). If you try to tell me that some people are just born carnival geeks, well, that will be where I jump off the bandwagon. The geek might have been a hang-glider pilot or a deep-sea diver instead. Some radical things must have happened in the geek's environmental developement to cause him to overcome all the natural aversions to eating roaches and broken glass.
