shit! Kxf8.   Well this game is about over.

*sigh*  man I stink at chess.  : (

Give yourself some credit.  You do not stink.  I played that last game a lot better than the first, and I'm not too shabby.  I'm no where near approaching Bobby Fischer or anything, but I can play pretty well.  Maybe you should play me a game of shogi.  I would definitely go easy on you then.

I'm taking the liberty of typing your moves in a program that will give everybody else a visual element to this game. I for one have very little experience in the game, I just know how to move the pieces, and have no idea what these alphanumeric strings mean.

I'll be uploading screenshots in a little while, if that's ok.

 Leo, I'm interested in making this last game into a GIF, and doing the same for future games.  Obviously this thread is kind of boring to nearly everyone who posts in it other than Warbler and me.  If it were easy for others to track the moves, it might be more fun for others to follow along.

PS Warb, I'm always open to another game, if you want.

I was going to follow the previous game and this last one, but I got confused with all the "oops, wrong move" situations. Could you please put them all in one post?

If you wanted to know what application I used to make the first gif, here's the site:

http://www.apronus.com/chess/wbeditor.php

In fact, I'd love to play, even though I'm terrible. It's just that the notation confuses me. I'm currently looking into ways to play any of you folks that wouldn't require learning the notation (yeah, I'm lazy ;P )

Okay, I found lichess.org . Sounds promising:

  • Free, open source
  • Accounts are optional
  • you can make groups (we could have an ot.com group)
  • looks nice, clean, and minimalist, the way I like it
  • their computer engine named Stockfish mated me in less than 20 seconds, here's my game

Looks good, Leondardo.  I've animated our last game, so let's see if it worked.

Couple of mistakes spelled Warbler's doom, I'm afraid.  First was when he moved the pawn on B7, leaving his knight undefended from my queen.  After that, he lined up his rooks along a diagonal so I could attack both simultaneously with my bishop.  I baited him when I left a pawn undefended, so that when he took it with his queen, my bishop could make the skewering attack.  There was no hope after that.  But it was a game well played, and I only make these comments to be instructive, not condescending.

I hope you will join in Leo.  Maybe you and Warbler would enjoy a game.  That site you linked to sounds good.  I haven't checked it out, but I will soon.  Gotta run right now.

 I googled and found a site explaining these alphanumeric strings: http://sites.rapidus.net/blanchdo/en/lesson_6_intro.htm

In fact, there is a lot of interresting stuff on that site... it might even help you understand the current game as there is lessons on tactics also!

 I give Reegar a hard time for double posting, and the past couple of days I've done it a few times myself.  Just wanted to add a reply to this, since I didn't before.  This is a good site you found, johnny.  Thanks for finding it.  I've actually been refreshing my skills a bit on it.  Leonardo, it could be beneficial for you to check it out, as it teaches the algebraic notation Warbler and I have used to signal our moves.  Sorry about the errors that made the last game hard to follow.

Please don't be angry.  I really had fun, and I hope you did too.  You should play again, as you and Leonardo might be a good match.  By the way, I wonder if my illustrating the game is actually adding insult to injury.  If so, I can take it down.

Any game of chess with me would be a verrrry short one. A friend saw me playing once, he called my style "kamikaze". I think that about sums it up.

 I'm not angry.  No need to take down your game illustration.   If I'd be angry at anyone, it would be me, for making so many stupid mistakes.

 Algebraic notation isn't that difficult to learn.   The first capital letter we type is the piece that we are moving

K=KingQ=Queen
R=Rook
B=Bishop
N=Knight(yes, knight begins with a k, but that would confuse it with the king)

Even though darth_ender uses a P for pawn, you technically don't have to.  anytime the move doesn't start out with a capital letter, you know it is a pawn that is being moved.

the next lower case letter and number is the square that the piece is being moved to.   Look at the board below:

The lower case letter represents the column(file) and the number represents the row(rank).   The first rows(ranks) are where the white pieces start the game. the last two rows(ranks) are where the black pieces start the game.

If you are capturing a piece, you first type the capital letter representing the piece you are using to capture with and you type in a lower case x, then the square you are capturing on.   There is no need to type in the piece you are capturing as that is obvious once you type in the square you are capturing on.   If you are capturing with a pawn, instead of typing in a P, you type in  the column(file) the capturing pawn is on then and x and then of course the square you are capturing on.  The column(file) is typed in using a lower case letter.

Sometimes both of your Rooks, Knights, or Bishops(could be queens too if you have promoted one of your pawns to a queen) can move to or capture on the same square.   When that is the case you have be clear which Rook, Bishop or Knight you are moving or capturing with.   You do so by typing which column(file) the piece is on.   If both pieces are the same column(file),  typing in the row(rank) instead.   If neither the column(file) or row(rank) alone can make clear the piece that you are moving then type in both.   If you are capturing in such a situation, you type in the capital letter representing the piece you are capturing with, then the  column(file) and/or row(rank) of the piece, then a lower case x, then the square on which you are capturing.

Now some special notations:

if your move puts the other player in check, you type your move as normal and add a + at the end.

if your move puts the other player in checkmate, you type your move as normal and add ++ at the end(some use # instead).

if you are castling kingside, you simply type 0-0(some use the number zero or the capital letter O)

if you are castling queenside, you simply type 0-0-0(some use the number zero or the capital letter O)

When promoting a pawn, you type in the square the pawn in moving to and then the capital letter representing the piece the pawn in promoting to.  If  the promotion also happens to also be a capture, you type in the capture just I said above for pawn captures and then the capital letter of the piece you are promoting to.

If you are capturing using en-passant, very rarely seen chess move, you type in the the column(file) of the pawn that you are capturing with, then the lower case x, then the square where your pawn ends up on(NOT THE SQUARE OF THE PIECE YOU ARE CAPTURING) and then type e.p.

here is a line explaining what en-passant is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/En_passant

at the end of the game your might see written 1-0 or 0-1 or 1/2-1/2

1-0 means white has won the game

0-1 means black has won the game

1/2-1/2 means the game is a draw

you will see people use slight variations of these notation rules from time to time like Darth-ender using the uppercase P for pawn.

That is about all I can think of for now.

Thank you Warb, that is really informative and helpful.

I guess it'll all be easier for me if I actually use it with a visual reference.

Let's see,
