Well, it's that time again. Big cross-over stories from Marvel and DC Comics.

Marvel's storyline of Infinity has just got underway. Three issues in and a couple of tie-in issues I am quite impressed. Major war on all fronts has not let up. I just hope that they can continue this quality for the duration of the storyline.

DC's Trinity War featuring The Justice League, Justice League America and Justice League Dark has just finished and is leading into Forever Evil, a seven part storyline in which the villians take over and have 52 one shot issues for each different charactor! Think I'll just stick with the main story thank you.

Not a big comic guy, really just been reading The Walking Dead for the last few years. Anyway, decided to try reading something new and read the first two volumes of Kick-Ass.

I really enjoyed them. I didn't care much for the movie, but really got into these. After I finished reading them I decided to rewatch Kick-Ass. Absolutely awful. Hated it. But I really enjoy the graphic novels, especially the first one. It follows the same basic story, but they made some really major changes for the worse in the film. I guess to make it more relatable for a mass audience.

SPOILERS In the comic the hero doesn't get the girl at the end. And Big Daddy was just lying to his daughter about having been a cop and her mother dying, he was just another psychopathic comic book dork who kidnapped his own daughter to raise her as a superhero after his wife left him. END SPOILERS.

They are two issues into Kick-Ass 3 so far, and I am completely caught up now. Still haven't read the Hit-Girl spin-off, but will do so soon.

Anybody else read Kick-Ass?

Big Mark Millar fan since the days when he wrote for 2000AD. Kick-Ass comic was great but I was disapointed with the sequel. Too many characters introduced that don't go anywhere (Seems to be common critiscm of the film). Haven't gor round to redaing Hit-Girl spin off yet.

His best book is 'Red Son' IMO. What if Superman's pod had landed in a communist workers collective farm in Russia instead of America? Incredible stuff.

His two 'What if supervillians were real?' books 'Nemesis' and 'Wanted' are great. But not for the feint hearted or easily shocked, these villains are realistic remember.

'Superior' is fantastic. A wheelchair bound Kid with multiple sclerosis is given a wish by a monkey from space. He chooses to be a Superhero but all isn't as it seems.

Personnaly I'm turned off by all the hundreds of characters in the Marvel multiverse thing. But his 'Civil War' comic was actually really good despite featuring every superhero in the galaxy. Basically examines a post 911 world through the Marvel Prism.

VIZ TOP TIPS! - PARENTS. Impress your children by showing them a floppy disk and telling them it’s a 3D model of a save icon.

I bought that based on the concept a couple months ago. Incredible.

I'm currently reading through DC's first Star Trek series, and I'm close to the end. All I can really say is that I enjoy the storylines, though the ones made before Star Trek IV's release are better than the ones that were made after.

Fables #1

In preparation for Telltale's next upcoming release I decided to read up on the subject. Gone through the first 10 issues so far. It's...not bad. Nothing spectacular like some would have you believe.

Fantastic Four Issue #1

Got really into the Marvel Heroes game for a while and that got me to go back to the start of it all. Went back and read the original Captain America, the origin of the Fantastic Four, The Hulk, Spider-Man, Iron Man...etc. I really love Marvel's Silver Age comics.

I've been reading Superior Spider-Man.  I thought it would suck, but it's actually been quite good.  Spoilers way below.*

I'm also caught up enough to read Age of Ultron.  So far, so good.

*Superior Spider-Man Spoilers*

Peter Parker is alive and well as a ghost in the back of Spider-Man's brain.  This keeps Peter in it enough that I'm happy.  And patiently awaiting his return.  I dig that this is a maxi-series with no prescribed length and that they'll end it once it's run its course, and that it could have some lasting effects on the status quo.

 Awesome !

I have just read Fantastic Four #1 as well, as part of Essential Fantastic Four vol 1.

Have you been reading Marvel comics in the last 10 years?  They have been changing the status quo on a fairly regular basis.

All Star Batman & Robin, The Boy Wonder #1

So Batman: Arkham Origins comes out later this month. In preparation for that I decided to delve back into the Bat's early years. This title in particular was name dropped by one of the game's developers as an influence. Apparently there's a lot of controversy surrounding the depiction of Batman in this series. I can definitely see where that's coming from but I kind of like it. I was sad to find out that this storyline still hasn't been resolved.

Dark Moon Rising - Batman & the Monster Men #1

Love the title for this one. Basically I'm sticking to storylines that tie into Year One. The art isn't that great but the writing was decent. It's apparently part of a trilogy of stories. Looking forward to the next part.

Legends of the Dark Knight #1

Nice tie-in story to Year One that fleshes out the whole bat thing.

As a general rule, no - I don't much like the way comics are written by the big two these days - though there have been a few exceptions.

Anyway, it seems that - IMO - the more things change in mainstream superhero comics, the more they stay the same.

Marvel's Infinity event is now over....and we go straight in to another big story event involving the Inhumans. Really enjoyed Infinity so I'll take a look at Inhumanty and see how we go.

DC's big Forever Evil is for me, becoming one big bore. Is this ever going to end ? I can't see an end in sight and the JLA are still dead or lost in Firestorms brain or something.

I have been reading some old JLA and Superman Team-Ups. Things were a lot more fun in DC comics in those days.

Star Wars #19

Been re-reading the original Marvel Star Wars run. It gets a bad rap because of the terrible first original storyline. All anyone seems to remember is that dumb green rabbit but there's so much more than that. Once Archie Goodwin took over it really grabbed onto that Star Wars feel and held tight for years. Lots of good stories that are completely overlooked because of one bad first impression.

The Transformers #5

I was never into the Transformers or GI Joe when I was younger but I have friends who are into them as much as I am Star Wars. So I decided to start looking into them. I heard a lot of good things about the Marvel Transformers series and decided to give it a try. Great stuff, definitely superior writing to the show. It's also cemented my affinity for Marvel over DC for good. As in issue 3 Dum Dum Dugan and Nick Fury appear and reference the Marvel Godzilla run. So the Marvel universe contains the most fun super heroes AND Godzilla AND the Transformers? That's no contest, Marvel wins due to pure awesome.

Picked up "Hulk Gray" and "Daredevil Yellow" at the library yesterday. Both thoughtful and emotional un a slow burn kind of way.

I thought it was pretty good for a Kurosawa homage.

Dumb green rabbit?! Of course you know, this means war...

Truth be told, I like the "terrible first original storyline" and that "dumb green rabbit". The only aspect about the Marvel comics I found offputting were the post-ROTJ storylines, and even those I didn't actually dislike.

Marvel's big event. Someone has killed The Watcher and removed his eyes. Marvel's heroes assemble under the leadership of Nick Fury. Now up to issue #1 and will continue in cross-overs as well.

futures-end-00-01.jpg

DC's new mega 52 issue event. I told myself that I would never get involved in these huge year long events again. Well, guess what ? I have taken the plunge again. The Batman of the future takes a trip back in time to try to stop the horrific events taking place under the watch of Brother Eye. Good apocalyptic start in issue#0 and several story strands taking place in issue #2. A long way to go yet so I'll see if I last the run.

I went to Free Comic Book Day at my local shop this month, picked up a couple freebies. They also had a buy two graphic novels get one free, so I get a couple more Civil Wars (Fantastic Four & Runaways/Young Avengers) and Matt Fraction's Hawkeye vol 1. My shop also did a clever thing, last year they had a raffle for a $100 gift certificate for like a dollar. This year they put the raffle tickets in bagged copies of the new Amazing Spider-Man #1. Since I was half-interested in that, they made a sale of a comic I otherwise would not have purchased. Clever.

I'm not a giant comic book fan. I have like 6 of the Civil War collections because I thought they sounded interesting, I got AvX because it looked cool. I do really like the MCU tie-in comics and have been trying to collect them also. On the DC side I have Dark Knight Returns and Red Son. Other than that I have a couple Trek and Wars collections, and I started picking up individual issues of the Star Wars ongoing series before I lost interest. Those are my physicals, I also have most of the Star Trek 2009 Ongoing series, and some other Trek comics on Comixology (along with every Marvel #1, thanks to them doing that crazy stunt).

All that to say, the last comic I read was Hawkeye vol 1, and I loved it so very much.

I finished re-reading the Marvel Star Wars comics, and I have to say that my thoughts towards them haven't changed all that much.

I feel the series was very well written and very strong until three things happened: that lame Mandalorian story with Fenn Shysa was released, Mary Jo Duffy became the head writer, and ROTJ premiered; from there on out the series just lost its spark and steadily became lustreless. Still, the series wasn't outright awful at this point, and it remained relatively enjoyable until the last four issues, when the writing just turned to complete shit with that stupid Tof storyline.

^ Reminds me of Tank Girl style a bit... without the attitude. I do like the bright colours though, at least it not black.
