I've ranted about this before, but the blu-rays of Aliens and Evil Dead are not those films' theatrical versions as far as I'm concerned. The directors just couldn't help themselves and had to digitally erase things that were visible in the original release.

When I was watching Star Wars earlier this week (the original version, duh!) I thought about the part where the ships take off. You know, that first shot when they leave the planet, and the lookout's in the tower. In the special edition, the CG ships turning around right next to him looked pretty cool, but I noticed they just didn't have the urgency those little bright dots in the distance had.
I completely agree. That, and John Williams' score seems to fit better with the ships in the distance quickly taking off. The SE version of that always seems out of place with the music to me.

I seriously doubt it was ever about the money. It's about ego and refusal to admit that mistakes were made. And probably confidence issues.
If Lucas was only in it for the money, they'd have released the SE on DVD sooner. Then a few years later release a box set with both versions. Then a while later release the original versions and SE again seperately with a few new extras and maybe "digitally remastered" to try and nab anyone who hadn't bought the previous sets yet.
If Lucas had kept the Special Editions as "Special Editions" (just as the name implies) - and had them as bonuses on the DVDs / Bluray sets along with the nice, cleaned, up 16x9, digitally restored versions of the Original Theatrical cuts, ... then no, I don't think people would have been so up in arms over them. They just would've been a "hey, that's a neat feature to have an alternate version of the films included." But, since he didn't do that, I can see why I, and many, many other folks are upset, cause the SE's freaking SUCK!
I remember when Lucasfilm was finally going to release the OT on DVD for the first time back in like 1998/99. I pre-ordered them, went to the store to pick them up and was so excited when I popped them in my DVD player ... only to learn a few moments later that the crummy SE's were the only things on the discs. :( I returned them about an hour later. That's false advertising if I've ever seen it.
Thank God for Harmy and the Despecialized Editions is all I can say.
