Do each of those candles represent 50 years?

Thanks for all the happy birthdays, guys.  I appreciate that.

Having skimmed through all the Nov entries, there's not much going on for this edition.  I was hoping to get it sent out today but the holidays are always busy for us and I still have things I need to get done...so if anyone has anything they'd like to see in the newsletter, let me know.  Maybe when I get a few minutes to sit down and finish it up, I'll try to add whatever you PM me with.

While we're at it, Yoda using the Force in order to lift a cake strikes me as completely out of character. Same thing here (other issues with the cover aside):

And a belated happy birthday to Zer0Squared :)

Maybe don't send out the newsletter if there's not much to be in there. It doesn't have to be monthly.

I was thinking of that option as well.

An Oppo 93 and above will output 1080p24 from 720p24

Actually not entirely true.  In the same firmware that removed ISO support on the 93, a bug was fixed with the side-effect that 720p24 could no longer be output as 1080p24.  As far as I know, it's not fixed yet and may not be fixable, as I believe the two bugs are two sides of the same hardware bug.  If you still have the ISO firmware, you're fine, but then you have the other scaling bug and any other bugs fixed since.

Thanks for that clarification:  I wasn't aware that it was still an issue.

Needless to say, my Oppo 93 still has the ISO firmware that will get updated only when hell freezes over.  The bugs are a nuisance, but do not outweigh the advantages of ISO/24p.

I believe Nvidia handles 24p correctly and the new Haswell HD5000 is supposed to correct that bug too, although they each have their own other issues, but I guess even PC have gremlins as a result of studio pressure.  I still think a PC is the most flexible player as it is much easier to upgrade or modify than relying on a manufacturer who is more interested in selling you a new player each time.

The reality is that no (affordable) piece of electronic equipment is perfect or even close, so you just have to makes yer choice and pays yer price.

Since I'm not in the USA, I can't comment on which cheap Bluray players there can handle 720p24, but the Toshiba 3200, Audiosonic BR-5.1SW and Laser 1080 can, in my experience.  However, both the Audiosonic and Laser do not support RGB digital output.

In retrospect, after considering the OP's reason for 1080p24 and the bugs in just about every player, I now tend to agree that having a 1080p24 encode would probably overcome many of those obstacles to suitable playback.

Don't you just hate it when the studios force you to do more work just to see something correctly?

I have a cheap Samsung bd-e5300 player and when I play the MKV on it, there's definitely something fishy going on with the scaling, like for example the crawl has some serious aliasing, that just isn't there when I play it on my PC and I noticed this issue with other 720p files as well. It could be this issue you were talking about but I don't know, because it sounds like you are experiencing some kind of motion judder, which I don't seem to. Funny thing is though, that once I remuxed the same streams to BD in TS Muxer and burned it to disc and played it on the BD player, the issue seems to be gone.

Harmy, let me add my voice to the chorus of praise for all that you (and others) have done with these beloved films. Truly remarkable. I won't bore you with the details except to say that you have gifted me with a priceless piece of nostalgia from my childhood. A favor that I will now pass on to my nephews who spent many hours watching the old vhs tapes with me throughout their own childhood. I can't thank you enough for the joy this brings to my heart.

On a technical note, with apologies to Harmy for clogging this thread with a technical cry for help, I recently had some alone time with my nephews' bluray player (bow chicka wa wa) only to find that the discs (2.1, 1.0, 1.0) that play fine in my PS3 won't play in a Magnavox NB530MGX. These are going to be Christmas gifts so I'm quietly trying to ensure playability without letting the cat out of the bag. I've looked for support specs but haven't come up with anything conclusive. I'd be grateful if someone who better understands these things can point me in the right direction to determine if this is a file support issue that may be an easy fix or dual layer disc support issue in which case I'll just include dvd5's until they upgrade to a new player. There is a firmware upgrade that I've downloaded which I'll do at Christmas but I can't find any firm details on what it addresses. Again sorry for cluttering your thread, Harmy.

Thanks in advance.

I don't know if this is the case, but some BD players unfortunately don't support AVCHD playback.

I just saw the newsletter and it says:

We're still hoping the BD release of Star Wars DE will be here this holiday season, including all the great bonus content, so we'll let you know when this happens.

I regret to say that with the end of the semester getting near, which means exams and deadlines on multiple papers are coming up, there is no chance whatsoever that I could find enough free time to finish any of this before Christmas, I'm sorry.

Don't apologize, sir.  I'm sure it'll be worth the wait when you have time to do it right.  Better that than rushing to finish up with no time to really work on it.

I'm curious, is there an ACVHD Disc ISO available for v2.5? I don't have access to a BD burner but I'd love to have a playable disc.

Not officially though you can theoretically make one from the mkv of 2.5 using "mkvextractGUI" (part of MKVToolnix).
You'd have to re-encode the video to something with a lower bitrate, and would probably *not* be able to fit the lossless audio soundtrack in, unless that's the only one you wanted.

You'd be re-encoding from this source, and not the sources Harmy is using (which are undoubtedly starting out at a higher bitrate, at least, much of it), you won't have quite the same quality as you would if it were encoded directly from him. I'm sure it's possible to get a decent enough re-encode with enough trial and error, but it wouldn't end up being quite as good as the 2.1 version, because he started with his sources, and you'd be re-encoding from something that's already been re-encoded. I do hope that makes sense.

The differences are relatively minor between 2.1 and 2.5. Betting that the 2.1 AVCHD would still be very much worth your while to burn and enjoy. BTW, if you haven't looked in some time, blu ray burners are getting way cheaper than they used to be.

Yes, this makes complete sense (I'm a video editor by trade). I don't really want the time and hassle of re-encoding the file.

An Oppo 80, actually.  But thanks anyways.  I plan on building a new desktop PC eventually, so I guess I'll just make my own 1080p24 upscale.  Although one made directly from Harmy's 720p24 master instead of the compressed encode would probably look better.

I feel your pain:  I wasn't able to get good consistent high quality playback of most media until I purchased an Oppo 93, before that I was chasing media players and other cheaper players that always had some compromise.  The Oppo 93 is not perfect, but it's the closest I have come.

The other way to get better playback results is to invest in a Bluray burner and burn as much as possible to Bluray structure:  it's the one thing guaranteed to be supported properly in a Bluray player (mkv etc are bonuses that may or may not work, even the Oppo 93 has a few mkv caveats).

Bluray discs are as cheap per GB as DVD now and with less issues with layer changes, although burners are not yet quite as cheap.

... I'm sure Harmy enjoys the hassle involved too, lolz.

BD burners are well worth it for the true movie fanediter, Love my LG burner :D

LG BE12LU30 External Blu-ray PLayer & Burner eSata/USB

-Can be picked up for £50-£60 on eBay nowadays.

I wonder if Harmy even when using his master material the BD ISO that he'll create at some point will be of lower quality and less audio features then the 2.5 MKV out already cos of encoding constraints issued in analogs (ironic :P) previous post ?

Hi, I've asked about this a while back and i'm sure others have asked the same but I guess I can ask again. Anyone know of any programs that can burn the movie file to a standard DVD with multiple audio tracks? I was sent a few suggestions but nothing have seemed to work. The closest I came to was using a program called ConvertX on Windows. It burnt a DVD with the tracks but the image quality came out a bit pixely. I have Nero but Nero will only burn one audio track. Also our Windows computer no longer works so I now use Mac. Someone suggested multiAVCHD which I tried using on Mac using Crossover but conversion of the file failed. I do not have a BluRay player and do not feel the need to get one as of now so please dont suggest that I get one. Im fine with standard DVD for now. If anyone could help me please inbox me. Thank you.

Harmy: I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but where did the "Commentary For Visually Impaired" come from?

Also, is there one available for TESB and ROTJ?

Thanks!
