Are there any seeders for the Italian cut (or any other pan-and-scan version)?

If you are referring to the spleen torrent, I am currently seeding. Thanks for the post btw :)

So, what you are doing is basically editing the bluray version and adding the original's missing scenes, rotoscoping the HD version to recreate the missing original scenes from the original version to keep the quality, or atleast most of it.

That is correct, in short "Despecializing" it. I'm currently going through a first color pass checked against RGB Parade waveforms- using Levels at this point but I'll probably use more advanced tools to take care of each material's respective color shift (the Blu-ray is glued to reds while the LD is attached to greens). I do as much roto work on the Blu-ray footage as possible to accommodate better unaltered sources in the future.

Italian cut is now downloading, thanks!

At least Ted Turner released the originals.

Good luck with your project. Lucas' changes to THX are far more severe than the to the OT, and I don't evny the level of work you're going to have to put in to restore it.

I think some elements might be lifted from the Japanese pan and scan LD, like the albino lizard shot.

Has anyone seen this poster before?

Interesting that the student film version was shown in Japan alongside Star Wars.

I've just finished a first pass at conforming the Blu-ray to the cut present on the Laserdisc (using the Angrysun edition).

Very cool!

I haven't seen the Angrysun LD preservation but I've heard it's (only) passable. For this, msycamore's preservation, SilverWook made an excellent cap (see this thread's page 2 for samples). AntcuFaalb is presently working on a new cap that should be better still, perhaps the best possible from a laserdisc source.

I would recommend (if it isn't too late) that you make your corrections independent of any particular laserdisc source. That way you can easily drop in another source (like the SW or AF cap?) for a better result with the least amount of redundant effort.

How do you plan to handle particular shots, where Lucas took the original shot and placed new graphics around it ..

  <-- Blu-ray frame

.. to create the new Blu-ray shot? Trying to resize that small original section up to 1080p, for the HD restoration, wouldn't look very good.

I'm going on a case-by-case basis with the digitally-extended shots, but for the most part I'll deal with a frame enlargement if it looks better than a Laserdisc upscale. Most of the ones I've looked at were expanded around 150-200% the size of the original.

The example shot you listed is one where I opted to stick with the original version after looking at it enlarged (somewhere around 300%, film grain now getting noticeably pixellated), due less to resolution than the amount of frames it's already missing.

I have indeed read through every page of this thread and those caps are a sight after spending hours looking at IVTC'd Angrysun blow-ups.

All of my roto work so far has been entirely on the Blu-ray clips for precisely that future-proofing reason. I wouldn't want to opt out of an SW or AF cap because I'd already done hours and hours of roto on Angrysun clips. ;)

At least Ted Turner released the originals.

I've been watching a documentary on the Cold War on BBC.  Now I'm in the mood for watching some totalitarian movies.

I've only seen THX 1138 once, it was the DC and I really can't remember it too well. I want to get a hold of the theatrical version. What are the best options right now?

I've just got Angrysun's DVD and also an AVI version of another LDrip. The picture quality on the former is pretty rough, and to my surprise the AVI has much better picture despite being compressed to 700mb. It's very watchable.  I may take the LPCM track from Angrysun and marry it to the AVI version.

Anyway, is this likely to be my best option for now?

msycamore's opening post (http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/THX-1138-preservations-Italian-Cut-available-see-1st-post/post/426875/#TopicPost426875) includes his breakdown of THX 1138's release history. Since then, with more information coming in, I've put together what I believe is a more accurate variation (http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/THX-1138-preservations-Italian-Cut-available-see-1st-post/post/668528/#TopicPost668528).

However, everyone agrees that the 2004 so-called Director's Cut (George Lucas has been releasing "director's cuts" since 1978 -- yep, they're all his!) changes the feel of what was originally a cloistered, totalitarian community to the latter's hustle & bustle of big-city future life. Maybe that was what he had in mind when he was a first-time, inexperienced director with a limited budget. But, like in his Star Wars tinkering, every newly added bit of business oddly mis-flavours the soup of his original production and reveals he is not the master chef we thought he was.

This thread's LD preservation should be superior to any previous. If you allow for drop-in replacement of your present source, it might save you redundant work later on.

Hahaha! Is that the one with the hair on some frames?

I am trying to get this from Spleen but no one is seeding. Once I get it, I intend to seed for months. Thats how cool it is..

What master was used to make the LBX NTSC LD? An IP print?

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Judging by the anamorphic distortion (the Blu-ray contains none of this and was most likely pulled from a 2-perf Techniscope element) and the white speck which appears to have been sucked into the optical printer, it was probably a 4-perf blow-up. If not the IN itself, most likely an IP struck from it.

At least Ted Turner released the originals.

I'll be able to start my captures soon.

I plan on using median-of-three rather than TooT (thanks for the tip, g-force!).

Whoa! And my favorite frame:

But don't show this to SilverWook ... he'll start looking for all those other frames!  :D

Alas the video was a 4 year old post, with only timeouts from it's project link.

If the print source is real, it's definitely the 2004 DC which did see a brief theatrical release (the climbing-out sequence contains the digital orange sky at the end of the tunnel, not to mention as seen in that frame it contains the DTS timecode and digital Dolby and SDDS tracks).

At least Ted Turner released the originals.

Seen it before. 2004 version. No way in hell a 70's print would look that good today.

No one will help in what?

Edit: I get what you mean, about the torrent right? Which one? I can try to help.

If i had the blu-ray (And a blu-ray drive for that matter) i could try to despecialize it, but seeing as i don't have those 2 things, i can't. I believe i already have that original LD rip that NeonBible mentioned, very watchable.

Hmm, i actually felt the angry sun edition had pretty bad sounding audio if i remember correctly, and the AVI version had decent quality.

I discovered it's not actually an LPCM track, that was just the audio stream for the menu screen haha!

I thought the angrysun audio had better dynamic range while the other rip sounded a bit more compressed.

I did try to port over the audio but the sync seems different and drifts.

Maybe a FPS timing issue? If i remember correctly the AVI rip is 29.97 fps.
