Glad to here it Harmy! Anyone that has stared at rontos and those other composite atrocities for as long as you have, definitely deserves a medal. But then, we know not everyone deserving of a medal gets one.

chewie medal

Almost hate to bring it up, but what exactly is Chewie doing with his hand?  It seems of everyone in the picture only R2-D2 fully grasps the situation...

Whatever it is, Threepio is sure enjoying it.

I just downloaded 2.5 and had a quick look. Its great, really well done. So there is also a 3.0 coming out? Sounds good, although this is fantastic for the time being.
No 3.0 quite yet. People are waiting on 2.5 to be released in a Blu-ray format currently.

Oh ok. So will that be a file that can simply be burnt right away? I thought people were already putting these onto Blu Rays to playback?

Exactly.  I am personally very attached to shiny disc media, so I burned the MKV to Blu-ray (demux/remux).  But the resulting disc has no menu, no extras, and I had to supply my own BD-SUP formatted subtitles (shameless plug).  Which for some people might be quite enough, but there might just be one or two obsessive completists in these forums ;)

Ok that's cool, that will make it nice and easy to create a disk once its out! For now, I will probably just watch it on my computer. Streaming the MKV through the PS3 Media Server is not that great for me, it doesn't play back properly.

TSMuxer also has problems with the GUI on Snow Leopard. If I wanted to play it locally on the PS3 I would have to convert it to a different format right?

Sorry guys, I have been really busy with real life stuff lately - I moved to a new flat and I had a friend visiting the last few days and schoolwork kinda piled up,  so I haven't really made any progress on anything Star Wars in the last few weeks.

It always amazes me how many people depend on their game machines for watching video content, or conversely, how few people bother to just hook a computer up to [at least] their main screens.  Almost all the frustrations I've seen spent at finagling things to work through devices never meant to support what people want, could so easily be taken care of quicker and with less frustration through the simple application of a computer to the problem.  Computers good enough to handle Full HD video can be put together so incredibly cheap anymore, I just don't get it...  There isn't a single TV in my house that doesn't have at least one networked computer attached, it just makes everything [besides network administration] easier.

Not to say that I'm anything but excited for a proper Blu-ray release.

Congrats on the new flat, Harmy.  That's always a busy, unpredictable time.

Fans. At least in my case, I want my movie watching experience to be such that, during a dead quiet part, I can truly hear a pin drop. Fully fanless systems with no moving parts, powerful enough to handle full HD video, are pretty pricey items (I've shopped them). Even then, I find a shiny disc to simply be easier, if you have it.

Others may have other reasons for forgoing the HTPC route.

There are plenty of fanless to fairly quiet routes one can go, that aren't all that expensive, and many can be mounted out of sight for those who don't like clutter...  There are so many options, yet so many people try so hard instead to shoehorn in extra features that the systems aren't designed for (or worse yet, designed against... PS3's Cinavia, I'm looking at you).

I, too, enjoy the predictable playback of a shiny disc (which I don't consider to be pin drop silent, btw), but if going the other route, I don't see why people bother with all the headache when there's plenty of PC-based solutions, which can also bring a lot more to the table beyond just video...

Hi people.  I know it's been out for a bit now,but I just recently became aware of the V2.5.  This question may have been addressed already and if so I apologize, but when I'm using my TSmuxer to convert mkv to blu file it won't let me get the HD dts sound?  I thought I was doing something wrong because I would get the disc ready (a regular dvd-r) and push play the movie would start and just freeze, with no sound at all.   After several attempts I used the option on TSmuxer to click the button and downconvert the sound to regular DTS and "poof" it worked!  Does anyone know how I can get the DTS HD to be able to be burned on the disc?  Thanks in advance.

I think the reason for many is there is no headache.  Put the disc in, and play it.  There's nothing else I want to do with my TV, so the same procedure works for everything.  I only consider an HTPC because I'm a tinkerer--I can't even think of an actual problem I've really encountered that it solves.

Agree discs are not fully silent within a certain radius, but even in the worst-case scenario, they spin slower than fans and hard drives, and certain vendors take a little more care choosing quiet transports (for not really that much more money), which makes them effectively silent at any reasonable viewing distance.  The audiophile market, crazy as they are, gets vendors to make nice stuff sometimes.

Our HTPC allows us to:

1. Watch things we download from Usenet on our TV; e.g., a 1.5GiB episode of Modern Family downloads in less than 5 minutes

2. Watch "webisodes"; e.g., Cinemassacre.com videos

3. Retrogaming (mostly NES using the Nestopia emulator) – we have USB NES controllers, so it mostly feels "real"

4. "Modern"gaming; e.g., we're playing the AVGN game on Steam right now

We don't use our HTPC exclusively, of course. We have tons of equipment, physical media, and video game consoles. Our HTPC does, however, act as a really convenient supplement.

Yeah, I've never encountered any of those problems ;)

I'm not much of a TV junkie. I just watch movies now and then. Hell, I haven't watched broadcast or cable TV since maybe the late 1980's. And I don't game.

EDIT: Okay, I do game, but my games involve big folding gameboards, little wooden pieces, and cards.  Slightly on-topic, Vlaada Chvatil is yet another reason for the world to thank the Czech Republic for its awesome citizens.

Although there was some issues discussed a few pages back about the track for the DTS-HD sound, it is more of a concern with the player you are using to load it being able to recognise and decode that stream I believe. Not all media players/software were able to handle it properly.

But it is worth noting here that, unless that is a typo, you will not be able to burn a DVD of the movie from the MKV file regardless. If that is your intent you will have to do a conversion and significant data compression of the file, in which case you are just better off downloading the copy of DEED 2.1 that is already in an AVCHD format. Even then you will still need a dual layer DVD to burn the entire film. The quality on most systems will be comparable, and outside the additional tracks the changes have not been as significant in this iteration, and it will at least be something to hold you over until an authored BD is available, if that is what you are looking for.

Harmy, these preservations are awesome! Can't state that enough. despecialized remastered, it was awesome to see detail that no other release official or otherwise has in certain scenes. (inside the sand crawler was awesome.) Any plans for remastered releases of empire or Jedi?

Author

 (Edited)

Yes, there will be remastered versions of ESB and ROTJ.

As to the HTPC, I for one use my PC for most of my movie playback. I pretty much only use my BD player for bonus discs with complicated navigation (since I use MPC-HC for BD playback on PC and it can't do menus) or when my PC is busy doing something else, like rendering. I love all the options I get from PC playback - I can shift 2.40:1 picture higher or lower on the screen according to how I'm currently sitting, to keep it in my direct eye-line. I can zoom in and out as needed. I can change subtitle placement font and size, which is always great, because I usually find BD sup subtitles to be annoyingly large and I usually prefer for them to be in the black bars. I can take a screenshot whenever I want. I can search through the film using mouse, so that I can jump to any time in the movie with a single click - it is just generally more flexible.

And I can do this:
