I've played the role of forum archaeologist and read some of those posts, yeah. And the "shadow returns" scenario has played out on several forums I've participated in.
Never revealed this until now. But seven or eight years ago, I had an account here. It's long gone: password lost, email account abandoned. I voiced my dislike of ROTJ and several members flamed me. The weather has. . . changed since then.

I'd defend or at least root for you if you were disparaged for critiquing a single story. Or heck, many stories. Even ANH or ESB, as long as your arguments made some effort at sense.
But that is different from dismissing the entire EU because it "sucks".

I for one wouldn't mind if someone said the Thrawn Trilogy sucks, or even that the PT is better than the Thrawn Trilogy (even though it isn't), if they would at least make an argument for how it is better. Simply saying that it just is doesn't cut the mustard.

I'm putting this in the open where it belongs. Yesterday I lost patience with Imperialscum's rotten attitude. He insulted Timdiggerm.
I sent Tim a message and asked if the insult would be sufficient to have Imperialscum banned. It was an impulsive move rooted in frustration, and that's why I would in fact make for a poor forum moderator.
Tim thought I was "out to get" the other poster.
And I was, for the two minutes it took me to send the original message. Apologies to Tim for the awkward moment and to Imperialscum for the backroom conversation.
