I know there was a fixed release with the welding scene but like you said, it is more rare than the missing release.

This one:
"WHAT YOU MAY NOT HAVE KNOWN: The 1989 laserdisc was quietly reissued with the newly corrected letterboxed transfer, completely doing away with the "incredible shrinking ratio" problem. This release, pressed by Mitsubishi Japan, features the same catalog number as the 1989 release. So how can you tell the two apart? This corrected edition is released by "Fox Video." Coupled with the 1985 audio mix , this could very well likely be the best presentation of the film
And in the 1985 audio mix...
"effects, new stereo'd effects (Jawa voices after Artoo's capture) and, most noticeably, the addition of C-3PO's line in the Death Star ("The tractor beam is coupled to the main reactor in seven locations. A power loss at one of the terminals will allow the ship to leave"). This new sound mix was used for every subsequent video release until the 1993 THX "Definitive Collection" remastering." Davis DVD Video Timeline
Actually, it sounds a little out of place. It was definitely recorded at a different time.
MeBeJedi, do you have the original 1989 version of the ANH LaserDisc or do you have the 1992 re-release of the '89 disc with corrected 2.35:1 letterboxed transfer?
Are you considering adding the 3PO line back in?
I hadn't really thought about it but after reading some earlier posts about the missing 3PO dialogue concerning the Death Star Tractor beam I started doing some research like a crazed Star Wars fan... hey wait, I resemble that remark
...and I began to think that while I do have many numerous "transfers" of ANH on DVD, I don't believe any of them have this line... well, at least not any of the good ones I should go check some of the early, crappy, bad audio-sync versions I have to make sure. Unfortunately though, all the "good" DVD transfers I have come from the same source (definitive collection).
I wonder why this line was taken out to begin with. I know according to the history of Star Wars that the movie was initially released without this line of dialogue and Ben Burtt added it in later. While Lucas has consistently made major mistakes in "adding" footage, I feel this line is crucial. I remember watching the new, "official" DVDs and wondering where that line was... ObiWan was just out there running around flipping switches... nobody ever told us that "the tractor beam is coupled to the main reactor in seven locations". If ya ask me, this addition makes sense.
I think this discussion sort of died a page back or so... what does everyone think... should this be added back in... and if so, what about the extra muttering from Jawas after they capture R2?
I know a lot of people look at the "definitive" LaserDisc set and worship it like it is infallable and it would be blasphemy to say otherwise but as has been pointed out, the "Faces" set is better in many respects, however, both versions are missing the 3PO DeathStar dialogue we all remember from the VHS.
MBJ, do you feel that adding the 3PO scene will be easy enough to do... is this beginning to feel like one of those "two many cooks in the kitchen" projectt?

Here's a new one I just did off the faces version of ESB. Considerably less noise and better color than my definitive capture last week:

I have the Def. Col, the Faces set, and disc 1 of the 1992 LD set (long story...)

Technically, it's immensely easy. It's simply a voice-over of the existing scene (which now has "snapshot
' noises as the pictures changes.)

But anyway, I´m glad I´ve finally seen what Lucasfilm has to offer and I still don´t want this new release, the cons still outweigh the pros. I was gutted to hear Boba´s voice, it is so badly done I can´t believe it! That bloody accent of his destroys those few but important lines he had, plus he delievers them quite badly especially the "what if he doesn´t survive... he´s worth a lot to me". Sounds way to rushed. The old dialogue had a much more sinister sound about it, which fitted perfectly with the character of Boba. Also the scene with The Emperor absolutely stank, there´s no emotion from Ian in that scene especially when compared to his rich performance as the very same character in ROTJ. And that new dialogue is ridiculous to say the least.
This new transfer has not vaned my interest in a new quality bootleg, preferably anamorphic since I already own the TR47 ones, I need more detail. We seem to be getting some quality work here from MeBeJedi, Laserman and the newest entry from Zion. Things are looking good for us OT lovers who ain´t buying into this 2004 Lucas crap.
peace,

[EDIT] I meant, as a .wav file (though it would be nice to extract it digitally from the LD.)
[EDIT] You know, I totally forgot I had this LD as well...
• STUDIO: CBS/FOX
• RELEASE FORMAT: Laserdisc
• COMMENTS: Three Standard-Play CAV discs (Cat# 1425-84)
• TECHNICAL COMMENTS: Pan & Scan transfer with with CX-encoded Stereo Surround sound
• OTHER COMMENTS: This edition is not time compressed and also marks the first time ever that fans can analyze the film frame-by-frame (thanks to the CAV format) - DavisDVD
Anyone know if this version has the sound byte? I guess I'll have to bring a TV in my office to play the LD, since my computer is busy.
Oh, I have this disc also...
• RELEASE DATE: 1986
• STUDIO: CBS/FOX
• RELEASE FORMAT: Laserdisc
• COMMENTS: Two Extended-Play CLV discs (Cat# 1478-80)
• TECHNICAL COMMENTS: Pan & Scan transfer with CX-encoded Digital Stereo Surround sound
• OTHER COMMENTS: The film is spread over three sides
(They are fool-screen, so I never really bother with them. Of course, that didn't stop me from buying them. )

I spent three seconds on each one. One second to paste it into photoshop, one second to resize to the correct aspect ratio, then one second to save as a jpeg.
So yeah, I guess you got me. I shoulda resized with AVIsynth.

Does anyone here actually have the Definitive LDs with the missing 7 seconds of ESB? Those are tremendously collectible, very rare indeed. Also I heard mention of laser rot. The definitve ld are not know for having laser rot are they?
I have the Definitive Collection LD's with the Leia Welding footage in tact. The early release was suseptible to rot, but I'm not sure about the version I have since it was a later pressing.
MeBeJedi,
I believe the missing C3PO line is included in one of those early LD's. If you look at this
link, he mentions this about the 1985 VHS release:
"WHAT YOU MAY NOT HAVE KNOWN: This release is a little-known milestone in the history of Star Wars. When Fox decided to digitally remaster the audio track for this re-release, sound designer Ben Burtt asked to be involved. What Burtt actually ended up doing was that he created an entirely new sound mix for the film. So in reality, the audio for this video release is the fourth official Star Wars audio mix (following the three original theatrical mixes - see the first entry at the top of this page). Among the clean up and digital repairs, some interesting new changes were added. These include sweetened sound effects, new stereo'd effects (Jawa voices after Artoo's capture) and, most noticeably, the addition of C-3PO's line in the Death Star ("The tractor beam is coupled to the main reactor in seven locations. A power loss at one of the terminals will allow the ship to leave"). This new sound mix was used for every subsequent video release until the 1993 THX "Definitive Collection" remastering [ Very Special Thanks to David C. Fein for this important revelation ] ".
He also says this about the 1992 LD. "Coupled with the 1985 audio mix, this could very well likely be the best presentation of the film."
So, I would bet that line was there.
I have seen a copy someone made of the movie with that line and the "Close the blastdoors!" line inserted into the Faces version of ANH. They are a little jarring. The person who made it did a good job. It's just that you can tell the lines were recorded at different times. Kind of reminds me of Vader's added line in ESB of, "Inform my Star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival.". It is really James Earl Jones performing that line according to Ben Burtt. However, it doesn't sound right because that line was meant to be in ANH, but they never used it.
When you get a chance, check out the '92 LD and see how the line sounds compared to 3PO's other lines during that scene. If you had the entire '92 LD, I would probably use that for the audio and maybe the video as well.
I just looked at Ebay and found this:
Laserdisc. I wonder if this is the 1989 or the 1992 version.

The '92 ANH played perfectly last night, all the way through. I was actually pretty impressed with the picture quality. Sure there was lots of film noise, but thats the '77 film I guess...once I dialed the brightness WAY down, the picture was very nice.
Here are my complaints with the LD, the stupid tie fighter blocks are still noticable in some of the later space battle scenes. Also, the final scene with the fake people on both sides at the ceremony is so obvious I laughed.
All in all, I got chills when I heard Han say "Yes, I bet you have" with all that sarcasm, rather than "I bet you have." Then, wait Greedo never got a shot off, that's right...
So am I correct in assuming the definitive lds do not have that C3P0 line? I'd leave it out if you can, unless it sounds better than the 92 Fox version...cause that was noticably out of place.

That is a good site but I would have to say that it is not all that comprehensive if it is missing the 1992 re-release of the '89 LD with the corrected aspect ratio:
You can find information on the '92 re-release here:
