Halloween [spoRv] *BD-25 RELEASED* — Page 2

I'm just saying .... this really all comes down to preference, not official word from Dean Cundey.

I love Halloween.  The Criterion LD & the 1999 THX DVD are my favorite go to's for this movie.  I have the Divimax which is cleaner & a bit bright but it's my 3rd choice if I'm feeling nostalgic for Divimax, LOL.

I decided to capture only the laserdisc audio, because, as Turisu pointed out in a previous post, the LD color grading is basically the same of the 35th anniversary...

raw capture; note the white clipping on the sky, where it's not possible to see any cloud...

Your LD screenshot looks like the 35th Anniversary BD, but the previously posted screenshot from Criterion's website looks like the Australian and German BDs.

The website shot may have had the colours and levels boosted for "promotional" purposes.

So it might have had, but if that has happened, the fact that the result closely matches two other releases makes me curious.

 Woah.

I was watching this again, and right after the boyfriend leaves and Micheal starts going up the stairs, you can see the crew's shadows on the wall =)

It would be nice to actually get the 1999 THX remastered 5.1 audio since we are trying to match up to that master. The 7.1 track would be nice for completion freaks like me :)

Great project!!

I'm very much looking forward to seeing the results here. Very glad to see that the M&E track is going to be preserved — it's actually a good reference for the mono soundtrack.

When the Criterion LD came out, it was revelatory because of the widescreen framing and because it had decent colors. People were very used to seeing crappy, faded prints in pan and scan. It looked pretty good for its era, but I like the more autumnal colors of the 35th anniversary edition.

Andrea,

Just so you know, the TV Cut is in the same aspect ratio as the Theatrical cut in the 1999 Limited Edition set.  It's 2:35:1.  I do not know if this is helpful to your or not.

Is there anyone here who doesn't have the 1999 THX that wants it?

PM me.

Thanks to Jetrell for kindly providing the 1999 THX DVD iso file; without you, this project will be stucked...

Now, it's time to receive the other languages soundtrack files... anyone?

UPDATE: FIRST TEST CLIP

actual image of the first ColourMatch test - top, CM'ed BD, bottom, THX DVD:

the comparison test clip (Blu-ray, DVD, ColourMatch, ColourLikeFBF) could be downloaded here (23.5MB, full HD, no sound):

ColourMatch is the best, even if not perfect is a vast improvement over the BD, towards the THX DVD color grading.

ask for another shot - max 1 minute - and I'll render it ASAP; try to choose a problematic one!

Looks good.  There are moments when the THX really pops.  It just has more vibrancy than the new 35th which is dimmed down and muted.  The THX puts a lot of color in the girls faces when they're walking home.  The 35th just strips all that color away.  It's lackluster in comparison to the warmth of the THX image.

Is that anti-aliasing in the video, or is that just from scaling down the image?

Yes, I agree that the THX DVD colors are really wonderful!

But I must admit that, if I didn't know of its existence, the 35th BD could seem to have a very good color grading - indeed, it has that "real look" that's good, but it's not the right one for the movie... and, it's not the total color mess that is "The Matrix"; infact, quite a lot scenes are really close, color wise, between the two versions. I felt to write this out because the 35th BD is a really good version, but the THX DVD is better, IMHO, in respect to the color grading.

So, I hope to bring the "best of both world" with this project!

no, it's just the downscale... request the clip you'd like to watch CM'ed (1 minute long at max) and I'll render it ASAP.

The shot with Michael stepping behind the hedge will be the most problematic shot of all due to the aforementioned digital tweaking. But if you watch the scene where the girls walk home you'll see the colour of the trees is very inconsistent between shots. Sometimes they look orange and then in the next shot will appear green. So perhaps a clip from this scene would be a good one.

I really don't like the muted look of the 35th.  The blacks don't seem right.  The THX not only has better color but its use of contrast enhances the shadows.  They should be darker.  They look a bit grey in the 35th.

The Colorlike script, from what I understand, is actually using the colors from the one source and putting those into the other source, so it shouldn't really be that problematic.

But maybe I am misunderstanding how it works.

Though honestly, I haven't really noticed any digital tweaking...all of the recolored shots I've seen OT members do look pretty close to the THX.

If available, the original mono soundtrack from the PAL french laserdisc; if not, any other mono soundtrack from DVD or BD will do.

Other languages are needed, too! In particular, german and spanish, as I think I could manage to find the italian one myself.

I will try to get you the french mono mix, it's on a few different DVDs, there's also a french 5.1 mix, but I don't think it's worthy of this project (easy to get), mono would fit more as the french Blu-ray doesn't have it.
