I have a friend who spent some time in Japan and who has a Japanese girlfriend; they went together and loved it, especially since they both speak Japanese and therefore have a different perspective on the Japanese dialogue. The same is true of when my bro and I went to see Once Upon a Time in Mexico. Because he speaks Spanish, he found much more fun in the dialogue than I did, though we both enjoyed it.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

my brother has a quite alright movie taste, although he tends to like indie/independant movies more than the blockbuster movies that come out lately. and he likes older movies as well. there is some truth to what he says, but sometimes he does not give the new movies enough credit.

Unfortunately, I've found that many modern blockbusters do not deserve the credit they so desperately crave and feel they are worthy of. This past summer, for example, had nearly 5 bad movies for every on good or near decent flick. Of course, there are the exceptions like Pirates or LOTR or X-Men. But so many blockbusters are style over substance and even the style has been lacking a bit. Indies have been the way to go lately. Some still suck, yes. And the independent route is the means for a lot of crap that shouldn't be out there to get out there. But I'll take a Whale Rider over a Charlie's Angels anytime.

I watched Lost in translation late last night when I should of been tucked in bed. And it is indeed a great film. That is the first romance I've seen in a movie in a long time, where i truly wanted the two people to get together.

Great acting, cinematography, and directing around the board.

Bill Murray was great and Scarlett Johansson was lumnious

Its a great movie, but extremely problematic at the same time. But thats LOTR in a nutshell, and not just the movies, but the books themselves. As the TTT DVD even admits, JR Tolkien didn't really seem to have any sense of pacing or foreshadowing or character arc. LOTR is probably one of the most flawed pieces of literature ever written, yet still it seems great nonetheless and overcomes all that to be very memorable, and I'm not exactly sure why.

Does it deserve to win the oscar (cause its going to) I honestly can't say. I've reached a point where I don't think I can truly pick one movie over another as the definitive best film of any given year. ROTK is certainly up there, but how do you begin to compare contrast ROTK with LIT? Two excellent movies, both completely different in scale and content.

Obviously what PJ mounted in his decade of work towards LOTR is unmatched by any filmmaker, but should we judge a movie by how hard it was to make? I don't know. It seems a shame not to reward such a valiant effort. But to say ROTK is a better film that LIT, or finding Nemo, or Master and Commander, I'm not sure I can do that.

I would rather the academy just recognized certain films base on their own merits, rather then having to have it all come down to one movie over another. That way if there are three masterpieces in one year, they can all be recognized.

But how do you go in and qualify which ones deserve this recognition. It still winds up coming down to "this film versus that" just with more winners. And probably more frazzled losers if you give them 3+ chances and they don't get in at all. Stick with one. I can't say I don't dislike how the Golden Globes approaches it by having two different film categories. But that gets sticky as well because I would not categorize LIT as a comedy/musical like they did. Hell, I still don't agree with Blockbuster Video's classification of Dr. Strangelove as a comedy.

well, bossk, there are some people who just dont know what a film is...!!!!

strangelove - a comedy? hmm... weird.

if the Golden Globe was anything to go by, then LIT will Best Picture, but i doubt it. i hope im wrong though.

Well, that's just it. The Globes aren't always the best predictor b/c LIT won best comedy/musical while LOTR won best drama. At least that's how I think it went.

And, here's some more news from the Screener Ban front courtesy of IMDb...

Academy Expels Member Following Screener Uploads

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has expelled actor Carmine Caridi, who admitted sending screeners of Oscar-nominated films to a friend, who in turn posted them on the Internet. The screeners included The Last Samurai, Something's Gotta Give, and Mystic River. Following the decision by the Academy's board of governors, Academy President Frank Pierson remarked: "We had hoped that this situation would not arise." He noted that the academy had agreed to a demand by the MPAA to require members not to allow the screeners out of their possession on pain of expulsion. Pierson said that the academy must now "live up to our part of the bargain and to enforce our commitment to safeguard the video tapes sent to us."

Speaking of Oscars and rewarding/reckognizing movies/film-makers, I've always thought about different (ie.: more fair) system of awards... wait, did I told you about it before?
I saw the original theatrical release of the Old Trilogy on the big screen and I'm proud of it...
How did I accomplish that (considering my age) is my secret...

I am just wondering, does anybody else have a problen with judging ROTK with the LOR Trilogy instead of judging ROTK on its own? I mean ROTK was the movie nominated, and not the whole series. The Oscars have never given award to whole series just indivual movies. And if its ok to judge whole series together, why give one to both Godfather part I and Godfather part II shouldn't you just give the whole series just one? Also how come the OT the greatest movie series of them all does have one. Maybe I'm making a big deal about nothing but I ask you can you compare a whole movie series against individual movies?

P.S.

please don't take this the wrong it is not that I dislike ROTK, It is just that I'm not sure that it deserved 11 oscars on it own merit.
Author
Time
I agree with you 100% Warbler. ROTK was nominated, not the series. As a movie of its own merit, it did not deserve the 11 Oscars. Especially not Best Picture. It was the worst of the three movies. They should have created a special Oscar to recognize Jackson for his cumulative efforts like they did to recognize Lucas for his contributions to special effects back in 1977/78 when they didn't have a Visual Effects category. The Academy screwed the pooch something fierce this year.

Thank you for saying exactly what I was thinking, Bossk. Who else thought that Into the West was the worst of the 5 songs nominated?

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

YES!!!! That song is horrible!!

I really wanted to see the one from A Mighty Wind or The Triplets of Belleville. Both were good songs, but I liked the ecelectic nature of the Mighty Wind song best. Levy and O'Hara's performance of it on stage was great too.
