<span style=“font-size: large;”>Disney’s Beauty and the Beast [spoRv]</span>

| PROJECTS: Released | In progress | Future | Mission & Setup |

Mission: to restore Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, to recover its original color grading, and to add the laserdisc original soundtrack.

Video sources: analog video captured directly from Laserdisc, using one of the best laserdisc player ever produced, the Pioneer HLD-X9

Audio sources: uncompressed PCM captured directly from Laserdiscs; other soundtracks from BDs and DVDs.

Subtitles sources: subtitles for all languages.

Project info:

“Beauty and the Beast” was released in Blu-ray but, altough its quality is good, is different from the laserdisc; the color grading is not what it should be, and has massive contrast problems; the laserdisc soundtrack is closer to the original Dolby Surround soundtrack than the BD.

This is a great idea for a project.  I'd planned to use RGBMatch to give the colors of Molly's preservation to whichever of the BDs it worked best with, but never found the time.  You might try to apply your color-matching technique to the BDs when you've finished capturing.  I'd be interested in seeing the result.

oh god, thanks for doing this.

Just a doubt: What will be the final resolution?? Full HD? Will you upscale the video?

Author
Time

I have not the BD yet, but many argue that there are contrast problems... if it's not true, a ColourMatch could be applied to the BD, and I'll use the laserdisc as color reference.

The final format will be upscaled to full HD, if the preliminary tests will be encouraging... just wait some days for the capture! (^^,)

The 3D BD is certainly very bright.  If even if sources do have contrast issues, can they not be fixed, or at least improved, by lowering the contrast?

Author
Time

If it has clipping white, ColourMatch produces artifacts; it is still possible to replace those shots with upscaled laserdisc shots, though.

The 2D BD has different color grading, it must be investigated if it has the same problems of the 3D BD or not.

The 2D BD has a nasty reddish look but no problems related to brightness or contrast that I'm aware of.

Not sure how ColourMatch works exactly, but could it recover lost grain (to the extent that it existed on LD)?

So this is an ideal candidate to be treated with ColourMatch.

No, the script attempts only to apply the same color grading to a given source, using a color reference. But it's always possible to add some grain after that, even if I'm completely aware that it will never be the same.

Or, simply put, I could always use the laserdisc capture and upscale it... the last results I achieved are quite good, and should work even better with animated material. Further tests will be conducted after the laserdisc captures are done.

Can somebody provide the Swedish soundtrack from either the DVD or BD for this project?

Currently enjoying Disney Infinity 3.0

First test clip (10MB, full HD):

left bicubic resize, right MagiCleanUp

...you know how much I love those stupid names... but it's easier to remember that than, let's say, derainbowing+denoise+sharpening+somethingelse+upscale version 1.54 revision b2... (^^,)

Actual X9's settings:

  • Y/C   : C-Wide (others are Normal and HR)
  • 3D.Y/C: 4      (0 min, 8 max)
  • 3D.YNR: 0      (0 min, 8 max)
  • 3D.CNR: 0      (0 min, 8 max)

so you use the 3d or 2d bd of the movie?

ehr... this was a [ruLes] project, but it seems I should change my plans... the 2D BD may be the logical choice, as it seems it has far less contrast problems (if any).

How are you unpainting the art work that has been changed twice before getting to BD?

I thought you were using the LD as the video source.

Thanks for the comment, Dr. M, I was waiting for your intervention! You are the expert here, and I'm glad you punctualize the fact that the original work has been changed not once, but twice, on BD... well, the idea to use the BD and color grading using the laserdisc as color reference was, well... just an idea!

I think I should stick with the original mission: to use the laserdisc as video source. But please, download the test clip and tell me what do you think about it; as the processing is really slow, I must receive some feedbacks before I start the processing - I could not let my poor PC work for a week, discovering at the end that the result is not good enough... (^^,)

Can someone confirm that the 3D BD is still missing certain shots of the castle where it looks really run-down?  I am pretty sure when I saw the rerelease in theaters it looked like they caught them all and either restored the original/reproduced look.

I'm not the best at spotting the side-effects of DNR, but the more aggressive clean-up doesn't look bad, whereas the unfiltered version looks really noisy.  Of course, you could conceivably put both filtered and unfiltered versions on one disc.

Author
Time

Well, the less filtered clip should be the ideal choice... I should test further, though... I don't want to let my PC on for a week, processing the video using the wrong script... (^^,)

Even if it's better than the DVD, the brightness/contrast on the BD release still sucks IMO. To me, every post-2002 release destroys the wonderful light/shadow compositions I remember. Stuff like Belle in the West Wing, or the night scenes at the end (on the DVD/BD releases, night skies have too much "blue" and not enough "black").

At least the LD version resembles the theatrical color timing.

My thoughts on the sample clips.

Best is the Analoclean with magicup.  The Magiclean turns the noise into a frozen noise pattern that looks like your watching it through a screen door.

You may want to find out what upscaler Dark_Jedi using on his SW project since he is getting great results.

I certainly wouldn't use bicubic when a superscaler is needed.  Spline36 in a pinch.  I've never heard of magicup, I'm assuming that it is a superscaler.

The other thing is the ghosting.  Not as in DNR, but as in the old analog noise.  There is a double image around everything.  Is that in the master or is it something in the analog equipment/wiring?

Seriously though, if the analoclean+magicup was your final release I'd be pretty damn happy with it.  It's really clean but looks like there is still some grain.

Finally, and I know it's only a short clip, but the black levels (and possibly the white level) need a bit of a tweak.  It doesn't quite bottom out at 16 like it probably should.

I don't think he will share his secret...

magicup is my own upscaling script.

I noted this, but I don't know what could be... I should try to capture the same disc with another player, and see if it's the player; or change the cable, and see if it's the cable.

There is also another possibility: recently I replaced the old video card with a new one. Don't know if could be the case, but I read somewhere that even that could cause some interference during video capture. If this is the case, I should replace it, but I must test each model if it afflict the capture quality or not...

Here you are the last attemp:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/1ugrfb

grain reduced, levels adjusted, ghosting still present of course, as the capture is the same of the other test clip.

Let me know what do you think about; if only I could get rid of the ghosting problem, the final result will be spectacular, thinking about the fact that the source is a mere laserdisc.

UPDATES:

Here you are the latest test clips

generic deghost script 1 + AnaloClean + MagicUp:

generic deghost script 2 + AnaloClean + MagicUp:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/8z2nzw

LaserClean (=AnaloClean + new deghost) + MagicUp:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/qty1g6

I think the latest is the best, as it has the most details intact with the less possible ghost effects.

Here you are a comparison with Molly’s preservation (I know it’s not that fair, as her version is taken from a compressed MKV, while mine is from uncompressed capture, but it’s just to have an idea) - click for larger png versions

Molly’s MKV + MagicUp:

X9 LaserClean + MagicUp (color/brightness/contrast tweaked a bit):

Please download them all, take some minutes to compare, and post your own opinion, as I’d like to start the project ASAP.

Thanks to everybody!

I didn't release as an MKV, so what you have is a re-encode of my (admittedly crappy) DVDISO...which was re-encoded from a settop rip.

"Right now the coffees are doing their final work." (Airi, Masked Rider Den-o episode 1)

Yes, I know that is a re-encode of a re-encode... (^^,) but it was what I have to make a "quick and dirt" comparison...

Apart that, what do you think about the last test clip? Is it the right script to use? Your point of view is important, as you are a Disney expert.
