There is love there definitely. I think the booze just triggers a self loathing, self destructive module in his brain.

It's a sickness. The question I have to ask myself is can I still cope with it's impact on myself.

I don't know any more.

To go further I guess I have to go beyond that point one way or another.

I was venting.

sounds like a very difficult situation on which I am ill equipped to give advice.

Perhaps a therapist could advise you?

There are a cluster of similar stories on the Politics thread.

Hopefully the case itself will raise awareness.

Ah.  Sorry for posting it here as well.  I generally don't read the politics thread, seems like a good way to get pissed off over something I can't change or do anything about ;P

Nothing quite like getting assaulted with Christmas music bright and early on November first. *screams*

Where were you in '77?

When I was a boy the decorations went up on Christmas eve and came down 12 days later.

Now as soon as the lights go out in the pumpkins they go on inside the wire reindeer and deflatable snowmen.

It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world.

As for boobies, it's just a lighthearted word for busty substances.

Someone should start a charity for encouraging puritans to invade another new world, they have screwed up three already.

Hypersexual my ass, anybody that gets turned on by a bracelet about breast cancer obviously has sexual problems anyhow.

I can understand an objection to the bracelets . . . but taking it to the US Supreme Court?    Its not worth that.

Hey, I'll defend boobies all the way to the Galactic Supreme Court.

yeah its ridiculous how early the Christmas stuff stars.   I do not want to see, hear, or smell anything Christmasy until after Thanksgiving.    It should be made law.

You don't have to.  It wasn't the people defending the bracelets taking it to the supreme court.  It was the people so hellbent on getting it banned taking it there after losing like at least 4 times and they still won't give up on getting them banned.

^ What was the condition of these worlds BEFORE the Puritans arrived? That we have any modern concept of a Bill of Rights and the independence of the individual and church congregations is thanks to these people. They never get nearly the respect that is due.

The First World was enveloped in eternal flame.

The Second World was shrouded in infinite darkness.

The Third World, being neither hot nor cold, was trapped in a state of cancelled-out semi-nonexistence.

There is a difference between puritans (the ethical and moral censorious mode) and the Puritans (a historical movement within Christianity).

Pagans, Non-Christians and Non-Theists can be puritanical right?

I'm not saying that the region we call the Third World was a Utopia before Western settlement but the problems it has now are largely caused by European colonists (the most successful being of a puritanical bent regardless of their denomination or sect).

The whole notion of sexuality as a spiritual pollutant, the primacy of authority attributed to the male gender the veneration of poverty and the devotional aspect of the veneration of labour are all part of the  puritanical ethos spread by colonialism.

Some of these are actual Puritan traits too.

The Puritans were largely responsible for the English Civil War which turned England into a state resembling a modern Third World country which had wider implications for Ireland and Scotland.

They didn't do the native Americans much good either.

doesn't King Charles I  also share blame for that war?

Not really.

The landed Puritans stirred up their tenant peasants against the peasants of the landed Royalists.

Monarchy and religion had practically merged since Henry VIII so you either backed your local landowner who kept a roof over your head or you backed the anointed chosen representative of God's authority on Earth.

Not an easy choice.

The Puritans had been growing in influence since Elizabeth's reign. Charles was an absolute monarch, if you start pushing those guys enough they will draw lines in the sand. Cromwell was a much worse pseudo-King than Charles was a King. They were both pretty piously vile to be honest.

I guess the movie "Cromwell" isn't very accurate then.   That movie makes Cromwell out to be the good guy and Charles I to be an evil tyrant.

Actually the film is in places very accurate.

The trial scenes are almost word for word accurate for example.

The exploding cannonballs are are common enough error to be forgiven.

For a list of general inaccuracies I suggest you read good ole Wikipedia. It's a pretty fair list.

Cromwell and Charles were both complex characters, men of their time etc but they were both pretty awful human beings.

Charles' dad was pretty screwy too. Sitting in on the torture of poor Agnes Sampson and others.

I think it's about time daylight savings time was discontinued. Having to turn the clock backward & forward every year is a royal pain in the rectum.

Charles' Dad did authorize a petty good version of the Bible though(if the Bible is something you like).
