ONLY 192 kbps? That's not nearly as much. I ran mine at the full 448kbps. You'd think a 3-pass MPEG would leave room for the PCM. I know my 2-pass left room for 3 soundtracks.

I would think that 192 is plenty for Dolby 2.0, but obviously not for a 5.1 track. Have you done audio comparisons at the different capture rates? You might be able to save a little extra room that you could use for the video or menus or whatever.

It is hard to really check out the video quality from captures. I have no idea what this stuff is supposed to look like on my laptop. I want to check these things out when it is hooked up to my DVD player and calibrated TV. Calibration makes a HUGE difference.

I would definitely recommend calibrating your setup before doing all this. If your blacks are too dark or whatever, it would be a waste given all your work.

But keep up the good work! I can't wait! As I said, I am a bit impatient.

MeBeJedi - That is absolutely beautiful. Totally a night and day improvement in quality. Awesome job! Have you considered having them pressed onto commerical dual-layer DVD's (DVD9) like the 5-star set and Kristhemovieman's sets are?

Thanks for all the time you've put into the project.

"From the screenshots yesterday, which are your versions?"

They are both my versions. The lighter strips are from my first attempt. I superimposed them onto my latest attempt to show the difference.

"I would think that 192 is plenty for Dolby 2.0, but obviously not for a 5.1 track."

Oops, you're right. I wasn't thinking that his set might be 2.0.

"Have you done audio comparisons at the different capture rates?"

My PCM capture was 1.2 Gbs. The 5.1 soundtrack was 360Mbs. 448kbps fits just right.

"I have no idea what this stuff is supposed to look like on my laptop."

Hint #1: Don't calibrate this stuff on your laptap. The differences between monitors and TVs is bad enough, much less an LCD screen. This is why I bought a $40 DVD that could play rewriteable media, so that I could test my visuals on an actual TV screen.

wainsco, when I get to that bridge..

That's my point. I can't judge this stuff at all on my laptop. I want to see it on my (calibrated) home theater before I judge anything...

Is your setup calibrated with Video Essentials? That name is no joke, it is essential. Never trust your eye to what "looks good", you need use the reference materials to get that stuff right. If your stuff isn't captured as close to "correct" as possible, it makes it unlikely (impossible?) that it can ever look right on someone's setup.

I will do both, I have no RBG unfortunately, only composite and s-vid. I think for what I am aiming to do, the transfers will look basically unchanged from the laserdiscs. This may or may not be a good thing, but I have high hopes.
Ive been reading all these post for quite awile now, before jumping in, and I think you are on your way to making a wonderful transfer. My goal is really to make a DVD set for myself, and then a master set stored on hardrive. Whether or not I will get these out in large numbers is not that big of a deal. I'd like to sell 10-20 copies, but I figure half of these will go to people I already know. Whether or not anyone here is interested I dont know.
My biggest compaint it that my sound will go analog-analog-digital, ending up in 16-bit stereo. The stereo format is fine, we will see how much quality is lost. I should be posting screens of Han shooting Greedo by next week. I plan on making a full set by next weekend, as well.
An option is use a Audigy platinum audio card, which allows for sony/philips digital in. However at this point the project become too expensive for me. My personal opinion is that 5-10 years after Lucas croaks. the OT will be released, or by that time OT transfers onto DVD will be fairly common.
MeBeJedi: I would love to compare early transfers with you somehow. I should have SW transfered by Saturday 10/2/04 for sure onto DVD-R.

I have a question, what happens if you misconnect the RGB (PbPkY) connection and change, lets say, a green for a red, what happens onscreen? The red becomes green and vice-versa?
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

You can post them on the page, or if I was really nice, I could send you the Photoshop masters.

Well, perhaps when I am done with SW we can exchange. I'm more than happy to share as long as no copies are made other than one for you and you alone. I would do the same with your copy. Absolutely no copies for others should be made. I just want to see the difference in our transfers. Since I'm the noob here, I'd be happy to send you my copy first. PM me if your interested.
On a sad note: SW Trilogy DVD Widescreen is currently number one seller on Amazon. Please go there and write an honest review everyone.

Are these the ones with the missing Leia footage and the missing C-3PO tractor beam footage?

I might have access to a very high end Pioneer LD player, perhaps an Elite, keeping my fingers crossed...dont want to use my Sony very much. Damn those Elites were soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo expensive in the mid 90s....

Turns out the guy I thought had an Elite did, then he got rid of it. Needless to say I'm not happy, and neither is after I told him what a huge monetary mistake he made. If you live in either the Bay Area or in Seattle and have a uber LD player, and would like a set of my films, and will let me use your player to make them, please PM me. Basically I am looking for people with Pioneer Elite LD players. Thanks guys.

Yes, the Leia footage is missing but I didn't notice for months until someone brought it up here. And the C-3PO line isn't in any of the post-89 sound mixes until the SE, which means not in any 93 DE set or 95 Faces set. I never liked the line anyway.

from what I can gather, MeBeJedi has the chronic buds.

I'm making transfers too, from Definitive collection laserdiscs. I plan on transfering the films only. No extras. I figure its the original fims people want. Keep the c@st down, and the value at its highest. Of course I am not selling these copies, that would be illegal. PM if youd like to offer me your blank DVD-Rs.

I believe the faces one did have the C-3PO line.

Will they be anamorphic? Does yours have the ESB Leia footage and the C3PO deathstar line?

You'll have to wait until he's ready with them mate. They look very promising. I have to buy a new HDD tomorrow, to fit all this stuff on them, lol. Your best sources at the moment are Rik, TR-47 and (the best of the best) yours truly. MeBeJedi would be the one you should get his upcoming discs off - to help recoup his production costs. I believe I charge the same price as Rik (internationally, cheaper for Australians), but I'll be raising the price A$4-8 from tomorrow, based on how much I spend on new hardware (which I guarantee you I only need for housing Star Wars stuff). Since most people are thrilled to pay the current prices, I don't imagine they'll be too daunted buy an extra couple of D's.

Well, if the Faces set does have it, MeBeJedi's set will, but I highly doubt it since that set uses the same audio mix as the Definitive Edition set did. If you want that line, the 89 LDs are what you want, but from what I gather they have a shitty transfer.

Why not everyone that has OT non-SE on DVD post what makes your version special and what it lacks.

I'll start.

Transfers from the LDs.
Anamorphic WS, no extras on each disc.
Alien Subs intact.
Has a fourth disc of extras (from the LD).
Single layer discs.
Missing ESB Leia scene and ANH C3PO line.

"from what I can gather, MeBeJedi has the chronic buds."

Eh?

"I highly doubt it since that set uses the same audio mix as the Definitive Edition set did. If you want that line, the 89 LDs are what you want"

The soundtracks for the Faces and Def. Col. are 99.9% identical (believe me, I've compared them.) That being said, I keep forgetting what this infamous line is. Can someone remind me. I have 1 of 2 discs of an earlier LD set, and I'll see if it's on there.

For the record, the biggest thing slowing me down is that I'm a stay-at-home dad this month with a 3-year-old and a 4-month-old (who ironically does not like being in my office. ). I've had to stay up 'til 2 A.M. the past few nights to get some serious work done. It's coming, folks. It's coming.

"Alien Subs intact."

I'm assuming you mean Greedo? I made my own subtitles, and burned them into the MPEG.
