Very happy to see The White Buffalo. What a treat.

Hey anyone know if it's possible to crack DVHS recordings that are Copy Once protected? I have numerous never going to be released titles on DVHS I'd love to rescue to Blu Ray.

Must be because I have Alien and True Lies plus others from DVHS. These are 1:1 .ts copies with no quality loss. I got them from Usenet years ago. I have no idea how the encryption was broken.

What size is the Alien DVHS?  I've only got the DVD9 version.

Just to be clear... I'm not referring to the DVHS DTheater releases but recordings made from cable and satellite.

How I wish I had kept my Bram Stoker's Dracula DVHS tape! The BluRay is an abomination.

It's 18.9 GiB on RuTracker.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Sounds about right. I do know that I was able to convert to a single layer BD-R. Looks great and IMO the color timing is more faithful to the original theatrical release than the official Blu-ray.

No clue. It's a real solid HD transfer and looks like the theatrical prints. Unlike the official Blu Ray! I was so so upset that I had sold my DVHS recording. But how was I supposed to know they would go completely revisionist and ruin the look of the film? So sad.

This is the perfect candidate for Team Blue. Earlier broadcasts of this have a healthy bitrate. Mine was recorded from DISH long before they clamped down on their bitrates.

Possible, yes, with some big clunky hardware. Are you willing to send hundreds of dollars to a random guy overseas? I can try to dig up the info, I think he charges $300-400.

Do any DVHS players have HDMI output? I remember seeing one that did a long time ago...

If so, then why not just do a lossless HDMI capture with something like the Blackmagic Intensity Pro?

Uh no. :) I'm not rich. I just know that some people have successfully captured DTheater releases, which not only have 5C but additional copy protection. Therefore it would seem by now that crack should have leaked out to others.

I have a great deal of terrific DVHS recordings of films that have never been released onto Blu-Ray and some of films that have been released on Blu, but the grain raped by DNR (like NO WAY OUT, U-571). No doubt these are titles that would be perfect for rescuing.

The one that is most on my mind is PEKING OPERA BLUES. It has a terrific HD transfer, decent subtitles and would only need the soundtrack captured from laserdisc and synced up (the DVD's are bad remixes). Of course we would need to find someone with the laserdisc. :(

There were one or two D-VHS players with HDMI outputs, yes, but that would be capturing the decompressed display and not the transport stream. You would have to recompress.

D-Theater releases don't have any protection beyond DTCP (5C); they are just marked Copy Never. I think the people who ripped the D-Theater tapes just used this device. It's hush-hush even in the underground though.

I know. I thought that the goal was just to preserve the content at (psychovisually) the same quality, not to have a bit-for-bit copy of the TS.

The bit-for-bit copy of the TS is, of course, the best solution.

It may be cheating but it's a 3 way tie between The Black Hole, Return of the Living Dead Part 2 and 3.

All of them... but seriously... Black Hole. Been way too long for me. I have fond memories of seeing it in theaters with my dad.

DJ, I'd like to know something more about your "True Lies" project. As a long time passed by the first time you mentioned your intention of working on it in its proper thread, and the last post is dated more than 2 and half months ago , I thought no one will do it... so I managed to find out the D-Theater version, and as I have also the PAL and NTSC laserdiscs, I thought about to add their soundtracks (PCM, DTS, AC3) plus the italian AC3 from DVD.

But, reading this thread, I saw your intention to release it soon. In that case, if you need some of those laserdisc soundtrack, let me know. Plus, I really love the idea of the italian AC3 soundtrack added to your project.

I don't want to "steal" your project idea!

Congratulations for all your new projects!

The TRUE LIES DTheater release was filtered/DNR'd and looks inferior to the HBO High Def broadcasts, which presented the film in an open matted 1.78:1 aspect ratio (there was some cropping during a few vfx shots). While it's soundtrack blasted the HBO version all to hell, in my view the video is far too compromised to use.

Considering there will be a TRUE LIES Blu-Ray released in the future I don't think this is worth Team Blu's time.
