Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released) — Page 435

Don't know if I'd mentioned this yet, but my oldest son finally saw Star Wars, thanks to the Despecialized Edition 2.5.

I didn't want to have to explain why this movie looked so bad compared to the other movies he's seen, and now I don't have to, at least until he's older.

But apparently at some point I must have said something about it, because when I said we were gonna watch Star Wars, he rolled his eyes at me and sighed and said: "It doesn't have dinosaurs in it, does it?" When I assured him there would definitely be no dinosaurs, he seemed more interested.

From the mouths of babes. Gotta love it. :)

It’s really sad when the “creative minds” behind something we hold dear are also guilty of its destruction.

There should be an alternate box cover with this testimonial on it.

Anyone here notice any strange audio glitches with the 1985 Laserdisc track on the 2.5?  Like very faint repetitions of sound in some scenes?  Like the scene with Luke & Ben on the Falcon.  When Ben replies "That's good, you've taken your first step into a larger world."  After he says world, you then hear the word again very faintly.  Like world--orld.  There's other examples too but that one really sticks out for me.  Just wonder if anyone else noticed.

I wanted to add my appreciation for Harmy and all who contributed to this project.  I own the 2004 DVDs and have NEVER played them.  They were a Christmas present.  Watching the GOUT was so bad with grain and the mono soundtrack, it turned me off.  I actually own the Definitive Collection LD but sold my player years ago when LD were going away. The hopes of a great Star Wars experience were shut down when the BluRay disc was stopped as soon as the first dinosaur was seen in the "new" film...  yuck!!!

So imagine my excitement when I found out about this Despecialized version.  After watching the sources Youtube video, I couldn't wait to see the real deal.  I have it now and although I don't have a way to watch (see burn a BluRay disc) it in my home theater, I have watched selected clips on my laptop and HOLY MOLY!! I was transported back to that 1977 evening when my family stood in line around the block to see the greatest Sci-Fi movie of all time.

Seriously, I can't contain the joy I felt to see the original back to it's glory with improved sound.  Outstanding work, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

If I had to guess, this is probably an artifact called "print-through" that occurs on magnetic tape.

I have heard print-through in many older movies/TV shows/records/etc. - it's most prominent in quiet parts, and especially noticeable through headphones. And once you hear it, you can never un-hear it...:)

This is certainly OT, but did I miss something???  Are there dinosaurs in the 7,8,9 sequels?

I think he talked about the Dewbacks.

"Let's face it, the Ewoks sucked, dude" -Hurley, Lost 5x13-Some like it Hoth.

Please bear with me if I tend to get too excited about anything or say too much, I have issues.

rontoscoping ftw

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

I definitely hear something going on with the "first step into a larger world."  Like the very end of the "d" in "world" is repeated- or, it's at least some kind of "click" in the sound that's being repeated.

This reminds me of something I heard back in the 90s, but wasn't sure if it was my imagination or not.  Pretty sure it was on the 1995 THX widescreen VHS (therefore, the 1993 mix), though it could've been from the 1990 VHS (the 1985 mix).  When R2-D2 is opening the escape pod, 3PO says, "you're not permitted in there, it's restricted," I could've sworn I could hear the "it's restricted" line repeat very faintly in the background, so it was like "You're not permitted in there, it's restricted it's restricted."  Though I just checked the 1985 and 1993 mixes in Harmy's 2.5, and I don't hear it.

Anyone remember different camera angles from ROTJ?

Yeah, the rontos are what I expect he would rant out loud about in reference to Star Wars not supposed to be having dinosaurs (as dewbacks were originally mostly just glorified background detail, not drawing huge attention to themselves), which is what the kid probably picked up on.  It is kind of a shame, if you really think about it, that people around Star Wars fans only tend to hear the negative things we rant about the films, rarely getting insight as to what we love about the originals (well, maybe in the middle of a heated rant they'd hear some of the positive feelings, but the negatives would be what they come away remembering).

For me the Dewback CGI was one, but all through the Mos Eisley scene (in the Special Edition), Lucas inserted those stupid "dinosaurs" and it completely ruined the scene for me.  When I was introduced to the sources video on youtube, I instantly smiled and let out a "YES" when the DESPECIALIZED text, knocks the tall dino out of the picture.

Fantastic work, for sure.

I was also thinking about all the "sources" that were used and wondered if the 8mm "selected cuts" film reels would serve any purpose.  Maybe they would just be too small.  I have an ESB reel in my collection and I would bet any of these would be fairly clean looking, if you could just get them digitized and upscaled.

Yeah, that's exactly it. I've really never, to my knowledge, complained about the Special Editions in front of my kid, but kids are pretty astute about picking up things like that--and apparently mine did, from me or someone else.  Certainly from his initial reaction he expected Star Wars to be a sucky movie with dumb dinosaurs in it.  And that's exactly the opposite of what he saw!

Anyway, thanks Harmy.  I know it must be kinda weird hearing about people's only experience with Star Wars being your reconstructions (never seen in the theatre, never seen VHS, never seen GOUT, just the DeEd's), but be very proud that they are good enough to serve such a valuable purpose for future generations!

Right on.  I really wasn't getting that "dinosaurs" reference for a minute there, but I am totally there now!  Appreciate the clarification…(some) hope restored in a resurgence of franchise quality in 7, 8, and 9. ;)

Hey Harmy a while back you said you were almost done with a Phantom Menace Despecialized Edition. Are going to upload that soon? Sorry for asking I was just really interested in a good theatrical cut of The Phantom Menace in HD. I've seen Adywan's but his is not perfect.

I know Adywan's reconstruction is missing that one shot, but what else is wrong with it?

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

I never said I was almost done with it, I just said that I might try to do it, and I actually never got around to it.

Why? It's a terrible movie.

You'll notice that people here are somewhat...obsessed...with original versions.  Even the crappy ones!

Yes, it was, but it did feel more like Star Wars than the subsequent two train-wrecks IMO.
