so is this "cut content" on every laserdisc ?

I ask, because some time ago I could have bought the saga on laserdisc at a fleamarket :-/

my only problem would be: I don't have a player to watch/copy it ...

No, this is not a commercially available Laserdisc. You know how nowadays filmmakers scan their film into a computer (if they shot on film), so they can edit on the computer without cutting the original film apart? LFL was trying to do that before it was cool. What they did was scan all of the film they shot onto separate Laserdiscs so they could figure out which parts of which takes to use from the discs, then record the timecodes so they could go back to the film to grab only the frames they needed. Remember, this was before hard drives could hold more than 20 seconds of video.

What was for sale was one of these discs. I'm not sure LFL actually used it for the actual editing of RotJ or just to demo the system they were trying to sell, but either way its raw, unedited footage from RotJ.

Don't you mean analog? :-)
The fact that "laser"disc is analog still baffles me.

Try to think of the laser in an LD player acting like the needle in a record player.

(One noticeable difference is that repeated plays of an LD don't cause the LD to wear out.)

Here's what LDs and CDs look like under an electron microscope: http://www.modeemi.fi/~leopold/AV/HowLDsLookLike.html

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

thanks 005 for clearing that up, I never had laserdisc, starting collecting movies on VHS in the early 90' and then jumping straight to DVD for many reasons ;-)

I thought that maybe there was some sort of bonus track or disc. like we have today, so maybe if I get another chance at getting laserdisc cheap, I will collect it, but only for personal interest then ...

and yeah, it is strange that laserdiscs aren't "big" CD/DVDs *g*

Wiki explains it well: Design

& mentions Lucasfilm 'Editdroid': History

I wonder what the picture quality would be like

I have the CAV version of Jurassic Park, the film is split over 2 disks using 4 sides, slow mo is amazing on it

I imagine it would look rather like the blu-ray deleted scenes but in SD, the material must have faded before being archived and I doubt if it would be adjusted for such a niche presentation.

I had a couple of last audio edit suggestions I wanted to raise.

one is an observation that C3-PO's voice sounds a bit odd. Not sure if these lines are in the radio drama but if they are I would suggest a swap only to C3-PO's lines or EQ the sound of his voice so it sounds more like he does normally. There is a strange hollowness to these lines in particular.

Radio Drama line sounds much better less like he is talking into a paper cup
http://www.youtube.com/watch?list=PL0E7B89EE4E751637&v=Whlt5gOuu4o&feature=player_detailpage#t=391

2nd one is the sudden cut to the crowd panic when in cloud city, I know Ady flatly said no on this but I think he might of thought I meant continuing crowd noise. So I mocked this up as I only mean bridging the cut with sound overlap.

third enhance the background sound of the space train that goes past the landing platform. Good excuse for a pan to be added here... Similar to the soldiers running past the falcon if implemented could also be enhanced with a pan effect.

And that is it. Link below

http://www.mediafire.com/watch/ofs0ubhsk1e1am2/Cloud_city_BGSFX_audio.mp4

that is all I can think of for audio cannot think or see anything else now.

Treat any sounds I used as markers for a "Blank"

Is it possible that in one of these very rare Laser discs exists footage of James Earl Jones recording his DV lines? Or did they not use to film actors while doing voice over work like they do now?I know that mostly happens when it's an animated film but reading about all the never-before-seen footage that may be in there got me wondering about this. In the LDs or elsewhere, I'd very much like to see JEJ back then bringing Vader to life.

Has anyone got any idea if said footage exists? If so, link please! :)

I think the footage on these discs are the dailies, the stuff that was shot for the film, perhaps if JEJ was filmed in the recording studio it would have been shot on video for record.....be cool to see

In all seriousness, I'd love to see behind-the scenes images or footage of those recording sessions, as well. I haven't seen any before, though maybe with some of the new content in the eBook versions of the Making of Star Wars books, something will appear?

EDIT: The official Star Wars YouTube channel just posted this -- it doesn't include any footage of JEJ recording, but this old interview has Lucas talking about his and Anthony Daniels's performances.

There probably would be audio out takes for James Earl Jones but unless it gets released we will probably never hear them.

Just look how long it's taken for the Blu-Ray deleted scenes to show up and they did not get a restoration either.

Once it get's an 8K release you might see a bit more or hear a bit more then because they have to give you an excuse to buy it again

I was watching the other day, and a few things came up.

First, as Luke escapes the Wampa's cave, there are gusts of wind heard, and flurries of snowflakes blowing sideways, but these are not always synchronized.  I think they should be.

Second, I noticed that Luke stood on one hand earlier, then two hands later when he is supposedly more developed.  Clearly it is harder to stand on one hand, so I think these shots should be switched.

Third, there is not nearly enough tongue action between Luke and Leia.  I mean, she's trying to make Han jealous, right?  She needs to really tickle Luke's tonsils!  This can be done with CGI of course.

Fourth, I find it hard to believe that Han is getting any decent Internet wi-fi connection inside an asteroid in the Anoat system.  Perhaps we should at least see a dish pop up and a reference to how many bars he's getting so we know how he's receiving such up-to-date info on who's running Cloud City these days.

Fifth, by the time the captain of the star destroyer with the smashed bridge reacts to the asteroid impact, he should have already been sucked into space.  What took so long?  Latency?

Sixth, I think it'd be totally cool if Vader yelled, "NOOOOOOOO!" when Luke let's go of the rail and plummets.

Eighth, I am very confident that the lighting reflecting off Veers' helmet changes very slightly between shots as he advances on the Rebel base, and it is extremely jarring.  In fact, the whole scene is a mess and needs an overhaul!

Sorry to point these out so close to the end, but I sure won't be happy if they aren't rectified. ;)

If you are having a dig at me Ender I don't mind... I probably deserve it.

Funny post! :)

What about the post conversion 3D versions that will be out soonish... I bet they will change stuff for this release.

If they do, is there any way to separate the 3d image and use the Base footage.

Adywan, how is the process going on moulding the han in carbonite? I hope the situation has improved since last we heard.

Indeed Frink, indeed. The impact that could have on the viewing experience is unprecedented.

Just wanted to show some of adywan's comments which were posted over on the FB page a little while back (3rd Oct.) -

"Work on the speeder flaps is almost complete.  A bit more dirtying up and they are ready to film on Monday.  I've also been working on the tiny set dressing pieces for the hangar miniature set.  Next to mould and cast the various pieces multiple times and then paint them.  Still some more items to create for the hangar shots too.

Back to work on the dagobah set too.  It's going to have to be made in sections because i realised (after i started making the base) that there is no way i can get this miniature through the door of my workroom so i can film it down stairs.

Once these items are complete and filmed then that only really leaves the asteroid canyon and the wampa to do and work on the video side of things will be complete."

I can't seem to get the terrific-looking FB 'speeder flap' prop shot to show on here properly, but here's that latest 'hangar detailing' shot -

Loving the work on the miniature detailing!

...and great news on finally getting hold of that rare laserdisc.  It's contents will certainly make for a marvellous 'extra' for ROTJ:R.  Here's the new FB page for it, along with a couple of preview clips from it - https://www.facebook.com/rotjeditdroid?hc_location=timeline

A pretty exciting Facebook update posted by Ady in the early hours today:

Some more good news. The problem with the Han in Carbonite castings has now been resolved, in an even better way.

The guy i had purchased the casting from finally contacted me. It seems that his personal life had interfered with his ability to finish all of the order he had (he had been moving house and had no internet amongst other things) He then said he was sending them out but still nothing arrived. He assured me that he had sent them, but city link had lost them in the system. So he sent out another set of castings last week. Well i did get them this time, but the box was badly damaged and the castings were smashed to pieces, with some sections completely missing. After informing him that i had run out of time and that i couldn't wait any longer because i needed to finish the HiC and get it filmed ASAP, he told me that he had no casting material left. But he decided that, because i had been messed about so much, that he would send me something other than just the castings of the legs and hands........

I'm pumped that ESB:R is getting close to it's release finally!

So good to see that the 'castings' guy has really come through now, and sent the whole casting!  I don't know if it's to eventually be returned or not, but it certainly couldn't be put towards a better use than this project.

Seems it's made of resin and fibreglass and is quite heavy.  It definitely looks good.  Guess that all the 'new shirt' work will need redone, but even so, this is some really great news.

And for those that haven't seen it yet, here's a link to 'Adywan's Workshop' page that includes the painted 'speeder flap' that I couldn't post properly in my previous post (it's down on the lower right-hand side.  Just click on the pic to enbiggen it) - https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.310392735642982.95894.223279371020986&type=3

Really good news, seems that this really could not have worked out any better than this result.

Some High Adventure going on... I really cannot wait for this project to complete but that does not mean I want it to come out any sooner than it is absolute.

I am rooting for the revisited team wholeheartedly, one of the most inspiring projects I have ever had the pleasure to discover.

Excellent and commendable Keep it coming and ride the crest of that wave you are on.

A lot of people I'm sure would give the shirt off their back to get there hands on that Han in carbonite eh :)

Is the speeder flap operated by string pulley?

Great news re: the carbonite model! Glad he came through in the end.

Will Ady need to add the fixed shirt on top of the existing piece? Or will he be making a whole new cast based off of this model? I'm curious how this cast (which has the incorrect shirt, since it's an original) will be used.
