Yeah, it was. I'm a little surprised they chose to show this off. I would have chosen the first on-camera lightsaber glow test footage, which is fantastic (and almost worth the price of admission on its own).

My personal favorites aside from that, is Lucas interviewed by Alan Arnold in 1979. So passionate.

And they're fairly high resolution too.

Note: The book works perfectly in the iBooks reader for the just released Mavericks version of OS X.

So, you do work for LucasFilm, how much do they pay?

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sorry, it was a bad joke. I sincerely like you Heilemann. :) But I must say your comments on the last few pages starts sounding like someone not particularly happy with this fan-base...

I rushed through the extra material in all 3 ebooks. The stuff for Star Wars and Jedi is GOLD, Jerry. The stuff for Empire maybe less so.

Don't worry, I got it ;)

I do take issue with the knee jerk portion of the fanbase, which manages to turn any and all conversation into Lucas bashing. I find that unproductive and profoundly ignorant.

I'm personally interested in the examination of the material itself; in the fanedit community and the historians, who actually contribute something to the conversation. That adds value, rather than noise and cynicism (that was why I embarked on Kitbashed in the first place).

It's very interesting to me to evaluate this new material and how it changes our perception of how the movies were made, or who the people working on them were at the time. It's completely uninteresting to me to have another swing at the Lucas/Kurtz piñata, and oh isn't it strange how the movies became worse after Empire etc.

It is interesting to me why the quality of the storytelling and the tone of the movies changed; and those reasons are rarely as simple "Lucas is stupid/greedy/megalomaniacal/etc! Oh, how everything was better with Kurtz around."

I see it as film history, and I don't see the worth it hammering on the same nail over and over. Especially without a few beers around.

Suddenly they're throwing out clips left and right:

The Kiss

The Skiff

Well the chasm swing clip can finally put to rest the urban myth that people saw a version of Star Wars where Luke missed with his first attempt at throwing the grappling hook.

Has anyone attempted to hook their Kindle/ iPad up to a capturing device yet to see if the video extras can be captured?

I was able to save the content of the ROTJ book from an iPad to my Mac, but the videos are only SD. Is it possible that there are higher resolution versions?

Author

I know little of such things, but considering it was intended for tablets, I doubt it would get any better than SD.

I doubt they'll be more than SD in the .mobi package. The book is pushing the limit on ebook size as it is I think.

I copied the files from the iPad to the Mac using the PhoneView program. Look for the file contents of the Kindle app. The audio/video content is in a separate 'Media' directory, not in the azw file itself.

And I hope some of you guys can upload a ZIP of all the videos...

Is the chasm/kiss swing clip on youtube really in HD?

Is there a quality difference between the ITunes and Kindle versions? There certainly is a huge size difference, unless one of the sites isn't accurate.

I'm seeding the Kindle version on spleen. This is my first upload, I hope it's working OK. It would be interesting to know if there's any difference with the iTunes versions. I'm unable to check it out as of now, as I need a new AppleID after I moved country.

Awesome, thank you! There's already several other seeders for this.

Edit: Wow, the best thing is, this ripped version can be read without problems in the browser - multimedia and all!

As the Kindle format uses non-standard parameters in the <audio> and <video> tags to designate the source file, I had to change those to actual paths. I apologize if some of the embeded stuff is not playable in the browser, as I edited the latter two books half-asleep (after 2 shifts of work). Strangely enough, Chrome has a bug that prevents it from play some of the shorter audio clips. If one of the clips does not play, it sometimes helps if you refresh the page in the browser and click play again.

I have seen both the iBooks and Kindle version now. The iBooks version's video is definitely of a much higher quality.

Take for example the video of the ending of ROTJ with the alternate music track. The iBooks version is 720p video. The Kindle verson is dvd resolution video with a lot more compression.

The Kindle version is 8.5mb

The iBooks version is 66.6mb

The iBooks version however has DRM'd video.
