Oh, come on! I love Star Wars a huge amount but "broad" and "deep" it is not. It's very simple storytelling done in a very effective way. Star Trek is a little more complicated with it's characters and plots and so on, but both are just as great

Just about every incarnation of Trek has dealt with these subjects, especially The Original Series and The Next Generation. TOS got away with discussing things most shows in the 1960's couldn't touch, because it was a science fiction setting.

I really liked the Neelix/Tuvok transporter accident episode. There were similar themes of identity, autonomy, and the definition of life throughout Star Trek. I agree it seldom feels deep because everything is generally wrapped up in one episode and the moral repercussions are generally never felt again as one might expect in a more serious and dramatic show.

I liked the one when Q made Riker a temporary Q and he turned Wesley into a blonde muscle hunk which Geordie fancied.
It was the nearest we got to some actual whale action in that show.

I just learned that Voyager had a shuttlecraft built into the saucer section that they NEVER. ONCE. USED!
A warp capable shuttlecraft that totally makes the Delta Flyer redundant...man that show had some terrible people in charge.
We never saw Picard take the Ent D Captain's Yacht out either. ;)

The theory I stick to is that Voyager didn't have it installed, that's just the dummy cover plate. It was brand new.
Though them using it in the later seasons would have made more sense than all of a sudden building a giant shuttle that can't fit through the shuttlebay doors...

Star Trek is far from soulless. Star Trek is so very human it overwhelms me (the original and next generation at least). There is a place in the world for both Star Wars and Star Trek, and even George Lucas has admitted to being a Trekkie. There is no other modern franchise which handles such topics as human decency and morals as well as star trek while still being entertaining.
As far as I'm concerned, Star Wars and Star Trek could do with some cross-pollination (Star Wars could do with more complex villains and philosophy, while Star Trek could do with more aliens that are actually alien and less pseudoscientific technobabble).
That's a very good point and I agree with it. Although honestly I would say that Star Trek is a much stronger franchise at this point. Star Wars has a couple movies that are better than anything star trek ever did, granted. But Star Wars also has alot of shit in it while star trek is much more consistently good, or at least consistently not a piece of shit.
This is a neat idea! Kind of like a fanedit. I'm sure some of you are too young to recall the photo novels though. ;)
