Thanks SO much, Dr. M.

And here I've held your TLM: Restored Edition in such high regard.

...actually, as far as that goes, I'm kind of scared for what the Blu-ray is going to look and sound like. There's so much opportunity for greatness there, and so much chance also for "improvement" on the original.

And here it is. The good news and... well, the other news.

A positive review:

But the comments on the review point to the following:

And there's a side-by-side comparison:

Sigh.

On the plus side, from the review it sounds like it's *otherwise* a worthwhile disc.

I maintain these changes are deliberate not accidental.  Left in their original state, I think it would cause problems when viewing in 3D.

What disturbed me most is that Ariel is repainted to look like her grotto is in full daylight.

I am Flounder's sigh.

I guess I'm just confused. The files themselves would fill a dual-layer DVD, but that's somewhere between ten and fifteen hours of material [my mental math skills are failing me].

He was talking about burning a data disc.

The larger x264 encodes of the The Little Mermaid series from Cinemagic HD in the UK are unfortunately cut, due to their broadcast regulations against flashing imagery.

Airings on HD channels are just upscaled.

Disney has outright admitted that it's an editing error that occurred when splicing the film back together during the restoration and conversion process. Probably the same reason why the Scuttle fade is missing too. It's not deliberate, it's lazy.

Also, it's not so much "repainted" as color corrected and contrast punched. The DVd in the clip has a heavy red hue missing from the Blu, and the Blu is A LOT brighter. I'm hearing this release has a remarkable amount of untouched grain. Even the original Grimsby error fixed on the Platinum is back. It's source from a whole different print.

What is a Grimsby error?

Well, according to IMDb: Just before Grimsby uncovers Eric's statue, the shirt of a sailor behind him changes color.

Hmm.  Will check that on the last two releases now...

Edit: Saw it... also very glad they fixed it.  Like the teleporting raccoon in Bambi, once you see it, you can never un-see it.

It sure doesn't look like it was the animators intent.  If it wasn't fixed in the Diamond Edition, it's because no one who worked on the film was involved in the restoration and the error has been forgotten.

I'm just waiting for the wonderful people at the Blu-ray.com to put out comparison screenshots of all the releases.

I knew it was a print-related issue! Is there any chance they'll be fixing it or are they not bothering? Honestly, this blu - for once, with Disney - looks worth the upgrade.

What really puts me off is we know that this films has Disney's first use of CAPS for the wedding scene.

This means that there is footage in the film that is available purely digital and can be used as a reference for the rest of the film.  Every indication is that they aren't doing that though.  This is the third or fourth color scheme for the film.

So far, I honestly don't get everyone's excitement.  From what I've seen/heard so far it looks like Diamond-Edition-Business-as-usual.

Actually, it's the scene when Ariel and Eric depart for their tour of the kingdom. Grimsby and Carlotta are on a balcony, waving goodbye. Grimsby's hand is in front of Carlotta, despite looking like it was drawn to be resting on the balcony rail. Basically a layer issue. The Platinum corrects this and it's back in the Diamond (like it should be). This is one of the things that suggests they used a completely different print that simply cleaning up the Platinum master. It's pretty subtle.

Here's a good video highlighting what's been found. My peeves are the credits and the Scuttle fade, but the POYW error is inexcusable.

Mermaid uses CAPS at least twice from what I've read. First when the carraige lands from the jump (note the non-spinning wheels due to it) and when Ariel runs down the stairs after being told Eric is getting married. Supposedly the rainbow at the end too. As for using it as color sourcing, think again. CAPS footage, like the cels, were painted with the film stock used in mind for the final negatives and prints. It's why Rescuers Down Under's BD was sourced from a print and not the CAPS files. They're NOT the final colors. Disney should be using film tests and color guides as they're source, not the cels of CAPS files. Sadly, most of the restorers appear to be unaware of this.

Also, the Bishop is still missing his knees, but the effect looks a touch different.

I don't know to what degree Disney animators took into account film stock once they started using CAPS.

TLM was made in a fairly bleak period for Disney's animation department.  A lot of the really experienced animators had left.  It doesn't strike me that they went through all the same things as they did with their Technicolor collaboration days with answer prints and all.

Besides, by the 90's film stock was a much different (better) beast than in Disney's early days.

Considering that fully CAPS produced films look fairly identical in nearly all their DVD and BD releases, I don't think ANY adjustment is being made (or is needed) when Disney digitally transfer those films.

Several DVDs that did have an intermediate film stock before DVD don't look significantly different (color-wise) from the later all digital transfers from CAPS.

Either they have been REALLY good at matching the film prints or the CAPS could be as accurate a reference as plain cells at this point. Rightly or wrongly.

BUT the CAPS segments are at least stable and already digitized.  I'd rather they went that way than adjusting colors and brightness because they'd be too dark while you're wearing 3D glasses.

The Platinum Edition's several mini flaws being corrected at least shows that people familiar with the film were at least involved in the restoration.

At this point, it's probably just a bunch new college grads hacking away with Photoshop or something making the adjustments with no real knowledge of the film.

Seriously, would you leave real obvious flaws (hand out of place, shirts changing colors, etc.) in a new restoration from a new print, but still take the time to paint a KNEE out?!

Fidelity to the original film was not their agenda.  3D eye candy for a new generation well timed to tie into Once Upon a Time's Ariel appearance, the Magic Kingdom's Little Mermaid ride and whatever else TLM branded stuff IS the goal.

They're probably using some annoying buzzy word like Synergy.

I was just doing some research on "The Emperor's New Groove" today and for the first time heard about the original version of the film under the name "Kingdom of the Sun". (Linky-poo)

While I was pleased to find out that Trudie Styler's documentary "The Sweatbox" has leaked, I was wondering if anyone has heard/seen/etc. if the "Kingdom of the Sun" Work-In-Progress has ever appeared in the wild?  It was apparently 50% complete and far enough along to show test audiences.  I'd assume it's probably something like the BatB WiP and with songs by Sting sounds 10x better than the final tENG film.

Anyone?

Just tested my chops on a DVD of the Winnie the Pooh shorts.  This crosses the line into custom territory, and the encode is low bitrate - let me explain.

1. Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree - laserdisc rip (IVTC’d; bumper added)
2. Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day - R1 rip (IVTC’d)
3. Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too - laserdisc rip (IVTC’d; bumper added)
4. Winnie the Pooh and a Day for Eeyore - R1 rip (untouched)

I standardized the encode on the format of the fourth short - 3 Mbps/192 kbps, prograssive.  That isn’t a lot - the DVD’s only a little over half full.  If you want high quality, at the cost of integrity of the first three shorts (the fourth is exactly the same as presented here), you’ll need to get the Many Adventures DVD.  The first three shorts’ quality is nothing to write home about even before re-encoding them, though!  Lots of film noise.

Keep in mind that I’m not good at authoring DVDs.  The background image is taken from the opening titles, and the font is the same one used in the opening titles of Many Adventures (1977) and Day for Eeyore.  I do think I managed to get a Play All option working, though, as well as a Play One option.

Just a suggestion, but for your Pooh torrent, I think you should’ve used “A Day for Eeyore” from the LASERDISC version (the one bundled with “Blustery Day”) and here’s why: the DVD version incorrectly credits Jim Cummings, Ken Sansom, and Tress MacNeille as Pooh, Rabbit and Kanga (respectively) instead of Hal Smith (who is still credited as Owl), Will Ryan, and Julie McWhirter Dees. There’s also another and even rarer version of the opening titles (in a different font), as seen on the 1984 VHS and laserdisc release of “Winnie the Pooh and Friends”. I made a comparison of those opening titles and posted it to YouTube (just search “pooh day for eeyore opening comparison”), though the 1984 footage I mentioned is currently incomplete and in very low quality.

Authenticity of Disney films is a bear to get right because they mastered the art of lucasization. Guess it’s fitting they wound up with Lucasfilm. --;

Really sorry to bump an old thread, but searching the Index I couldn’t see one more relevant and I don’t feel it warrants its own.

I recently bought a small lot of bootleg VCDs off of eBay (there was an Ewoks one in there, sue me), and included in the lot was A Bug’s Life. Disney/Pixar I know, but like I said I felt a new thread was unnecessary.

The files on the disc are dated 29/11/1998 - Four days before its theatrical release.
It is obviously filmed on a camcorder and both the audio and video are quite clean all things considered.

Other than the VCD I purchased the lot for, A Bug’s Life is the only one that’s still playable and hasn’t degraded past the point of use. I fear it’s on its way out very soon so I’m going to rip the files to my computer for the sake of preservation, but I was wondering if anybody would be interested in this?

I’m not sure how wanted or useful a CAM of this particular film would be as it isn’t really my area, but everyone has their own niche and stuff like this isn’t exactly common. If it’s of use to somebody then I feel it’s worth mentioning.

Let me know if there’s any interest.

Caps from Disc 1 and 2 (in order):

(I also have Antz and Jim Henson’s “Buddy” I’m attempting to salvage, but not sure how they’ll go).

Got a question about Beauty and the Beast.

In the special edition, the castle gets massively cleaned to the song “Human Again”.

And I’ve read that the cleaning of the castle affected much of the artwork after that point as well so that when I choose to watch the original version from the Blu-ray I’m not really seeing it. It’s post-cleaning.

Has anyone ever done a video comparison of a few choice moments, to show the changes, or have some time codes to compare?

Just curious.

Thanks,
