About the sound syncing. Here is what I got from Cinch:

--------------------------------------------------------

we may create an all-new reference here.

all video versions i tried to match to prints are missing a few frames every 10 minutes.

so we actually have more frames at head/tail as in the middle of each reel.

i'm not sure if the gout has those frames, as the audio (i think) was mostly taken from official releases.

also not sure if the bluray is missing those frames.

so as of right now, we don't know.

we most likely have the sound even if frames are missing at head/tail, since there is an overlap of about 1-2 secs on each reel for changeover and/or lay(platter) projection.

this is necessary due to the offset of sound and picture on film. so we'll have to take stock of what's actually there.

I decided to not sync my project to GOUT because laserdiscs have missing frames too, and also audio of course...

But if you have 1/2 seconds of audio at the beginning and ending of each reel, I think you could just repeat one frame to replace the eventual missing one, and stay in sync with the GOUT.

My 2c...

Sadly my projects are lost due to an HDD crash… 😦 | [Fundamental Collection] thread | blog.spoRv.com | fan preservation forum: fanres.com

Not just missing frames, but extra audio. I don't recall which set it was, but the destruction of Alderaan was at the end of a disc flip. The scene went black, but the audio of the explosion tapered off for a second or two after the screen went black. I don't recall specifics, because that was many years ago, but I found it very interesting. It might have been the Def. Col.

Don't you mean "we"?

Who's that old guy on the left?

It's the same actor Luke found inexplicably hiding inside Hayden's suit earlier.  Except in that photo he's got eyebrows, and they look way too bushy and weird.  Photoshop fail ;)

Hmm, now that I think about it I'm sort of surprised the SpEd didn't replace Shaw with a digitally aged Christensen in RotJ.

That'll be fixed in the 3D re-release, don't worry.

I remember thinking Yoda had a big mustache on his chin the first time I saw that scene and it freaked me out.  It looks the same in the small version of that pic.

Very nice samples although a bit soft and I do have a feeling a 'real' film scanner could squeeze out even more details, hopefully this will be your next upgrade :-) yeah I know not that easy to accomplish, but still, awesome prints like this certainly deserve it.

Are you 'scaning' with a camcorder now instead of the canon compacts, are you going to rescan the SW print?

I respectfully disagree that they are soft.  If you ignore the "softness" of the movie, and look more closely at the fine details of the image, it is very sharp.  There is some print damage on the frame and you can see it clearly.  I don't think a 4K, 10K or whatever is going to get much more out of it.  It is what it is.

I never noticed before how the Sebastian Shaw ghost is only partially transparent. It looks like he's got this big opaque area in the middle of his body. Weirdly the Hayden ghost has this too. Did they just swap the head or something??

Yes, the did, but the also resized the body. Here is my own "Despecialized Edition" of that scene I made a few years ago, using the HDTV version with old Anakin's Head from G'Kar's Special Edition DVD.

Why did you have to go and mention that? That red opaque area appears before the body appears, and now it's all I can focus on. It also goes to show how little effort they took in correcting these errors for the Special Editions.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

That's wonderful, ah, the beauty of real 35mm film! :) And great to see the real Anakin there as he's always been, the true Star Wars canon. This is going to look incredible when everything is fully restored. A huge thanks to the Negative1 team! :)

I was looking at the print damage too and got the impression it could possibly be sharper. Also I was looking for the grain structure but that sample is probably to compressed to determine that. I feel the grain is very important to capture/preserve as it is random from frame to frame and thereby can contain/reproduce more detail when film is played and the grain pattern gets 'temporal added up' (so to speak).

Still team -1 efforts and results are amazing no question there.

I haven't posted anything on this forum in literally forever, but I just felt like dropping by and saying how excited I am for this project. Everytime I see a new screenshot I feel like I'm finally looking at the true version of the trilogy, given a proper and caring restoration at long last. Even without colour correction, these shots are simply stunning. Thank you so much Team -1 for all your hard work and dedication in preserving these classics.
