I think we should discuss in public, just in case something happens to me.

Well, apparently, Encore doesn't support adding more than 8 audio tracks, so I'm gonna have to use something else to author the BD - I think I'll try MultiAVCHD but I find it a bit confusing.

Anyone know if DVD Architect Studio (comes with Vegas Movie Studio) can handle this? I think there's a downloadable demo.

I use Studio and I'm sure I've added at least three beyond the six needed for a 5.1 file.

JEDIT: Oops, you asked about the Architect version that comes with Studio.  I don't know the answer to that.

I've used DVD Architect many times though I haven't added in more than 8 audio tracks yet, but I remember doing more than 8 for subtitle tracks, so I'm pretty sure it can do it.

Though my only nitpick with DVD Architect is that with authoring Blu-ray, you have to recompress everything and you can't load premade subtitles, so you wouldn't be able to take whatever has already been prepared and just mux it in. It's weird because you're able to do import pre-encoded videos if you're authoring to DVD.

So whenever I used DVD Architect, I added in placeholders (short 10-30 sec videos) instead with the amount of audio/sub tracks required, and just replaced them after using other programs.

So I wouldn't really recommend it.

Yeah, building the BD structure that way could impact compatibility and I definitely wouldn't want anything to get recompressed.

Just re-watched the featurette Harmy did about the sources, which is shockingly good, and was wondering if the You_Too preliminary color corrected source was ever made available. Anyone know? It would do nicely if I ever wanted to put together a project of sorts for ANH or the other two.

Well, I've still got it rendered at 15GB 720p but it may be best to ask You_Too to send you his script and you could render a lossless version for yourself - that's how I'd have done it if I had the experience back then.

I do still have that script but it's way outdated. I mean, if I were to re-do it today I might have tried to find some kind of better solution to the oversaturated magenta parts. (like laser flashes)

And I also remember I did two versions for Harmy, one for the whole film and one for only the Death Star battle where I removed the dark blue in the shadow detail.

Oh, yeah, that's right. I guess it wouldn't be too hard to write a script that would apply different settings to just that section of the movie, right?

I just remembered that back then, I had You_Too render it for me, because I didn't have a BD drive yet, so I couldn't even rip the BD myself - rendering it yourself using the script (or an improved one possibly) would definitely be a better way to do it.

May be the time then to start over with 2.5 again, if the script is already outdated before the release..  ;)

I'm thinking that there should be a new version of Despecialized at some point, because some scenes could definitely stand another attempt. I've figured out how to neutralize most of the pink flashes and dark blue bleeding with a single set of global settings, and I'm pretty sure it will work with the Blu-ray as well.

Compared to the Senator technicolor print, Despecialized has a ways to go in my opinion.

See my thread on correcting the DVD for more info about my ideas about solving these issues.

But Despecialized 2.5 overall is so much better than the Blu-ray, it needs to be seen in whatever case.

That Senator cap looks terrible, there is barely any detail on the buildings in the background, the whites are far too blown out.

Laserschwert--do you have everything you need to work on ESB/ROTJ credits?  No pressure, you just did a finished up a great project.

Nope, I still need the GOUT caps of the ESB and ROTJ credits. Or can I use Harmy's 1.0s of those?

Author

I don't see any reason why you can't.

Just wasn't sure if those were the GOUT credits or already some re-creations by Harmy.

If they were re-creations, he did a crap job ;)

The Senator photos are almost certainly too bright most of the time. However I'd say they are far closer in luminosity to the original than the DVD/Blu-ray, and even the GOUT. My purpose was to show that some of the shots in Despecialized are still too dark, with highlights that are still too green. Take a look at the cup in the foreground - in other shots, that cup is white and even blue, as well as in the Senator photo. But as far as anyone knows, the cup is supposed to be white:

As long as it's green, the correction isn't entirely correct. And it is a small detail, but color correction demands attention to such details, for they often lead to uncovering systemic issues, such as the green highlights or the blue and pink tones throughout the movie. I believe that addressing these on a global basis is the best way to deal with the problem, for they are often global changes and aren't limited to a single shot or scene.

Your global color correction looks great, but props are not really a good color reference, as the finished colors of a film often look far different from those in real life.

True. But the color shifts shot to shot in Star Wars, though there is a tendency towards one or two colors. Knowing what something is supposed to look like in real life will tell you which color is the correct one, and which still needs correction. Of course it's tricky to change one color while keeping the correct color about the same, but it's not impossible.
