Problems with 2004 ANH disc?

Just got the set and opened it up. The ANH disc seems to have encoding problems during Chapter 26. I ran through this chapter on three players.. a Panasonic, an Xbox and a PS2. All three of them experienced the problems at the same points. Macroblocking, freezing, etc. I haven't watched the entire disc, though I suspect that the entire first pressing may have these issues. I inspected the disc and it's free of any visible defects or damage, so this does appear to be an encoding problem.

Would any of you who also have your 2004 Star Wars sets mind helping me verify these issues? Check out Chapter 26 on ANH and see what you can find, please.

Looks like I'm going to have to return these and wait for a second pressing. Damn.

I know that. I was joking.

Ahh, okay. Sorry.. I'm just a bit miffed at the wonderful quality control on these discs. My apologies for lacking a sense of humor at the moment.

That's allright.

Welcome to the boards, by the way.

Thanks. I appreciate the welcome. It's just unfortunate that my first post was due to such circumstances.

what do you mean your "first set"? If you going to buy it AT LEAST buy the PAL versions, find an online New Zealand distirbutor, they should be your cheapest source (or use video ezy dvd which would probably be the cheapeast Australian source).

That's more like it. You'll still need to use a PAL source if you're going to use them for re-editing. With all the times "Region 1" gets the best DVD release, it's good to have a clear winner by PAL. The same could be said about the Alien Quad, apparently the "Region 1" is better because you can listen to the audio commentary on both versions of each film, and you can view deleted scenes place markers while watching the films - it seems that the ability to listen to commentaries on both versions was something they did "because they could" - people claimed 30 minutes of commentary would be missing from the Alien 3 disc since on the PAL release you can only listen to it on the Theatrical Cut. Since then it's become apparent that no commentary is missing from the PAL discs, and to fill in the gaps in Alien 3 at least, they'd just repeat some of the commentary already used.

This is stupid, because it means the Region 1 owners have no idea which version they *should* watch with the commentary other than guesswork (they should watch the version that the PAL's were given for commentary since they're complete and with the version to which it refers).

Which means in the end the only thing of value Region 1 got was deleted scene place markers - which is not worth sacrificing 16% of the resolution for. Making, in my opinion, another clear winner for PAL (Regions 2&4).

I too have a problem with Chapter 26. Right on Tarkin's line about signing the order for Leia's execution, the disc skips. It did this on my player AND on my computer. What gives?

I had the same problem, but I don't recall on what chapter it was, it was early in the movie. I thought it was my DVD player's fault, as it does freeze when it changes layers. I would call that a "normal" problem, I've seen it happen on almost every dual-layered DVD.

Oh, so I suppose it's not on the region 4 version.

It's an encoding error - so why would those encoded seperatly from your release have it? It's possible that other NTSC releases like Japan use the same encoded video stream - but for PAL they have to be encoded seperatly. I've only watched all the way through Star Wars so far, Empire and Jedi I'll watch when I have time. I checked all the way through chapter 26 and it's fine.
