DoubleKO- are you going to join the Steam OT.com group?  I can pretty much guarantee you'll be player of the week by the end of the month.

Er... I don't have Steam. It's a bit of a thing with me.

I don't play games online, so I don't want my games inextricably tied to the internet. If I move somewhere with no internet (a matter of a few kilometres around here) I want to be able to install and play the games that I've paid for. I've pirated games that I've bought just to get them working without Steam.

Point-and-clickery continues; I'm almost half-way through Broken Sword and really enjoying it. Keyboard head-banging has been reduced.

Think it's time to replay this masterpiece again...

Haven't played it all year. I need to decide what philosophy I'm going to play through with before I start.

Think I might go with cold hard merciless Blade Runner. I remember it being the hardest way to play, since it is dependant on keeping Crystal Steele on your side, which can be tricky.

Holy carp, I found it! This is the first computer game I ever played. Originally called Wizard 1, the name was changed to Oldorf's Revenge because of confusion with Sierra's games. At the time I was indeed convinced that Sierra's Wizard and the Princess was the sequel to Wizard 1.

While it was mainly a text-based graphical adventure, the game had an RPG element where you could change your character to a wizard, a cleric, a strongman, gladiator etc. in order to accomplish different tasks. You could only use each character 5 times, so you couldn't "cast a spell" every time or you would use up your wizard.

After numerous exhaustive searches I finally got a handful of results from some old computing magazines scanned with OCR software. The name change explains why I could never find it before. Internet grail search complete!

From Compute (Nov-Dec 1980):

It's not listed at mobygames even under Oldorf's Revenge, but this site reckons only 1000-2000 copies were sold.

That's the worst pitch for Player of the Week I've ever had the misfortune to read.

Though I do hear you.  I've put a lot of eggs in the internet basket.  Here's hoping it holds.

Reminds me of the one that Tom Hanks played in Big.  Wait, is that the right movie?

Yep, I just watched Big about a week ago and they are quite similar. That may even have subconsciously spurred my further searching. Although I think it was mainly Ryan's game porn that sparked my latest adventure revival.

JEDIT: That Last Crusade game is crazy so far. Who the hell would try to dissolve a piece of sticky tape? And find a key inside it? Sometimes logic and intelligence just don't help.

One of the best adventure games ever made. I hope that can be released on GOG.com in the near future.

Dang, hey doubleKO in your searchings did you come across a game that was said to have been developed by a 7 year old?

It was the first game I ever played. Back on the original Macintosh. I'm not certain it was programmed by a kid but I think I remember it claiming it was. The art certainly looked like a kid had done it. =P Looked kind of like Highland Computer Services' Mummy's Curse.

I don't remember a lot about the game. Just that you had to wander around the world and sometimes you'd go the wrong way and be killed by a ghost. Man, I wish I could find out what that game was. =(

I love GOG. If anyone is desperate to play Blade Runner in the meantime, I found a page that tells you how to create your own installer. Haven't tried it yet but I have found the game on several abandonware sites. I'm not sure if the instructions are specific to BR or if you can use the method to bypass other 16-bit installers.

Doesn't ring any bells. It definitely helped that I remembered a specific phrase from Wizard 1. Nobody else on the internet seemed to remember the "one-eyed, two-thumbed torkie" but OCR software saved the day. I'm glad Highlands could afford some advertising!

I can't exactly remember how I last got 'Blade Runner' to install. My old CDs point blank refused to install. Think I downloaded a hooky pre-installed copy onto my hardrive and it read my disc from there.

Still has 3 bugs after that. The shooting range doesn't work and the bomb and deadly rat instant kill you if you don't install a patch. Apart from that the game works perfectly on modern PCs... it's the installing that's the tricky part. I'm never uninstalling it ever again!

I've just iced Zuben and I'm onto chapter two now. I'm off for one drink at The China Bar in Animoid Row...

I've decided I am going to buy GTA IV. Why? I have no idea. I've never been into GTA, the only one I have beaten was Vice City, but this new one look really cool.

V is the new one.  And this has motivated you to pick up IV, or was that a typo?

No, man. I've played 4, it wasn't that great. Only reason I wanted to play it is because it features an Albania mafia. I couldn't get into it. But the new one looks amazing. I was just off on the numbering. I don't keep up on GTA. Half of them don't even have numbers in their name anyway, it's confusing.

I really enjoyed Vice City and Bully, and the one thing I hated about them was blowing a mission and having to start over. Sucked for longer winded missions that had a somewhat difficult end. The new one gives you checkpoints so you don't have to redo 20 minutes of the same thing over and over and over again. Pretty sure that is why I stopped playing 4, got tired of redoing the same thing from the beginning because I messed up some where towards the end of the middle.

Not that I am begging for games to hold my hand more than they typically already are or anything, but it gets boring driving 5+ minutes clear across the map over and over again because you weren't paying attention to the instruction and messed something up, or just suck badly enough not to be able to beat the mission on the first couple of tries, nobody wants that for their daughters.

I'm on the quest where you need to get all the things to save the air right now. It's quite good, wish I had gotten into it sooner, already waiting for a Steam sale on Bioshock 2. Similar to how I reacted to Mass Effect, where I just didn't invest myself in it a lot.

At school I wrote a text based adventure version of Pacman which played like that in TRSBasic.

If you get tired of waiting for a Steam sale, and have above average trust in your fellow man, you can probably pick up a cheap Steam key here.  I've bought ~10 things from people there, and have yet to get burned.

But be warned that the PC version of Bioshock 2 is a little off- it requires GFWL (even the Steam version) and has no available DLC (due to no GFWL marketplace anymore).  The DLC for it is quite good and still available for the console versions.  There is also no controller support built in.

Mrs O'Five was just playing the demo of Diablo 3, as some friends of ours were playing it. She was having a good time and I overhear this conversation:

"How much is it? $60?! If I get that, I'd have to let Drew get GTA-"

Then a credit card hit her.

So I'm on my way to GameStop.

Ooh. That's a bit annoying. Might try this place if I get impatient, but I've got enough of a backlog on Steam now that I can probably wait until the Christmas sale. I don't use the controller anyway, so that's no issue. It's like Arkham City though, you can create an offline profile, right?

Also, thanks for mentioning the Tales of Monkey Island sale, got that using the account credit from just selling off all these silly trading cards.
