RE: Xhonzi's continuing thoughts on a possible return from PC-Gaming-Retirement

1. So... Duck Tales comes out on XBLA tomorrow... for the same price it's been on PS3 and PC for the past several weeks.  I am buying it on Xbox (most likely) for a couple of reasons.

1.a. I have to keep reminding myself that Steam is a single user environment.  Mrs. xhonzi and I are playing Trine 2 together (ah, yeah... some classic splitscreening ON AN UNSPLIT SCREEN!) and only I get achievements and whatnot.  Not that she cares... but, it's the principle of the thing.  At any rate, I've only really purchased single player games that will be played (or not, as is so often the case with Steam) by me.

1.b. However, I know my kids will at least want to play Duck Tales and will want to play on their own accounts- save their own progress, and get their own achievements.  Hmmm... stick a feather in the (current) console DRM schema as it is more family friendly, which, as a Dadgamer, is pretty important to me.  However!  For what I've paid on Steam for some games, it would be cheaper to buy multiple copies on Steam than a single console copy.

2. There is a serious lack of demos on Steam!  I think it might be rough to be an XBLA developer and be forced by MS to have a day/date demo for each XBLA title released... and you have to wonder how many XBLA demos turn off potential buyers... but it really beneifts the consumer!  I've played the demo for tonnes of stinkers that I never purchased, though I thought I might.

2.a. However, when you buy a game on XBLA/PSN, you can be reasonably confident that it will play well on your rig.  It has been developed for your hardware/controller.  There are always going to be the New Vegas 1.0 experiences like certain unnamed (C3PX) members of this thread have had... but for the most part, you don't have to wonder if your console will run the game at a playable clip, and whether it supports your controller.

2.b. So it surprises me that PC demos are more or less a thing of the past.  (Yes, there are some on Steam, but maybe about 1% of the games are represented.)  Sure, PC games seem to be more compatible with various hardware than ever, and I've been pretty surprised at how well my not-that-great-even-last-year-when-I-bought-it AMD laptop has been chewing up some recent releases... but still.  I've bought several games for cheap on Steam wondering if my rig would be able to handle them at all.  The 360 controller has emerged as the official unofficial Steam controller, but there are still some surprises when you find out that game doesn't support it (or your controller of choice) natively or well.  Oh, that would have been nice to know before you bought it.

2.c. Back to Duck Tales, it has been reported that the control scheme on the Steam version is a little 'wonky'.  Most of the otherwise positive reviews have complained about it.  It's been called "game breaking" by some.

2.c.i. I will know how well the game controls on the 360 before I've dropped one dime on it tomorrow.

2.d. Piracy & Try Before You Buy - You hear (even in this thread) from "otherwise honest people" that a reason for pirating games is so that they can, essentially, demo the game.  I think a lot of those same people then conveniently forget to "purchase" the game until after they have completed it, and then what's the point?  However, being a reasonably honest person and embarking on an average gaming rig has made me think once or twice that it would be nice to "demo" something before purchasing it.

2.d.i. You know, like with a demo.

2.e. Above is an argument for demos lessening the reasons (the stated reasons, anyhow) for piracy... could demos also lead to piracy?  I don't think so... but maybe that's a reason why PC games generally ditched the practice.

2.f. And since you can't borrow/loan (generally) PC games...

2.g. Who ever played a SNES demo?  Did they have N64 demos?  Back in the day, one of the advantages that PC could lord over their console brethren.  I don't know if PS1 did any demos, and I think it was a limited practice on PS2 and oXbox.  It's really taken off as a console feature on consoles... about the same time it shut down on PC.

2.g.i. What gives?

The end.

Playing Diablo 3 on xbox, never played it on PC. Is it just me or are these demons all talk?

Anyone planning the get GTA V. I think it's out in 3 days, I'd kind of forgotten about it. I've never actually finished a GTA game but if it's as good as the trailers make out then I might make a real effort with this one..

Been playing a bit of Halo: Spartan Assault but I've lost my save games so I'll have to start again. I've tried playing with an xbox 360 controller plugged in, it's different but not really easier.

One thing that bugs me is that some things are locked away behind a paywall inside a game I paid for - they are things I can get by without but it's an annoyance just the same.

Picked up the dlc missions for Rage So I've started playing through the whole game on the ultra nightmare difficulty. For the most part it just means playing carefully / cautiously.

I think modern games are making me stupid and impatient. When I was ten I could wrestle with a text parser for hours to come up with the right command. There was no internet to obtain hints or walkthroughs if I got stuck.

If I didn't know the name of Roy Rogers' dog, I had to ask every single person I met and spend days trying to guess the answer. "I know his bloody horse is called Trigger! What about the DOG?!"

If I didn't have a set of encyclopaedias at home I never would have found Carmen Sandiego, or figured out puzzles with Roman numerals. I have started playing some adventure games lately and am beating my head on the keyboard every two minutes. Hopefully it knocks some cobwebs loose.

JEDIT - Re-reading this post it seems I was always stupid and impatient. Or at least had bad general knowledge of cowboy actors' dogs names, geography and Roman numerals over X. It could be argued fairly successfully that I am just bad at adventure games. Modern games are making me old and rambling!

I'm kind of hooked on Tetris at the moment.

Specifically the version that comes with Dr Mario on the SNES.

No! That gaping hole there in the middle is pretty hawt.

JEDIT: I still remember back when programs started coming on 3 1/2 instead of the old 5 1/4s. It was awesome having so many less disks, and they seemed so much studier with that sliding protective gate. You could just pop the silly things in your pocket and carry a massive 1.44mb of data conveniently with you everywhere you went. The future was here, man!

Yes plus the smaller disks made a satifying ker-clunk when you put them in the drive and you could flick tha metal protector gate thing back and forth when you were bored during loading times ;-)

C3PS, you'll be happy to hear I've started Bioshock, and am definitely to the point where I don't see myself quitting it again. I'm already planning when to start Bioshock 2.

Gorgeous game, isn't it? Even with the graphics being a bit dated, it is still a pretty game.

I just heard about the talkie version of Last Crusade: Graphic Adventure that, apparently, only came out in Japan for this system called the 'Marty'.  There are were clips of it on youtube... but they've all been pulled down.

That's what I thought when I was playing Antichamber!  You just need some (arguably badly made) indie games in your life to sharpen you back up.

RE: family share

Very nice!  Yeah, that will solve at least one of my problems... now what about splitscreen games recognizing player #2?

DoubleKO- are you going to join the Steam OT.com group?  I can pretty much guarantee you'll be player of the week by the end of the month.

What's your overall opinion?  I still haven't gone to W8, so I'm out of the will for the moment.  I should have tried it when I was at my folks place for my sister's wedding, since my pop has several W8 machines.

I'm just throwing this out there. A year ago, me and my roommate played through LOTR: Return of the King for Xbox. It's basically a hack n slash beat 'em up, like Golden Axe if it were made in 2003. Anyway, this game doesn't get enough credit. I started playing again, and if you like games like TMNT: The Arcade Game, this is one of the best titles you can play that is comparable for recent generation systems. There is also a Two Towers game like this, but it isn't as good. But man, I played through this game twice on my own and once with my friend in co-op, and I even watched all the little bonus videos you can unlock. The game itself got positive but not amazing reviews when it came out, but if you like 3D hack-n-slash/beat-em-up style games with a little bit more depth than their 16/32-bit predecessors this is a fantastic title, with some minor flaws, but nonetheless one of the funnest times I have had with the xbox. The reason I am posting this is because I saw it at a used game store for about $20, so if you do see it for a good price then pick it up if you like that type of gameplay.

I loved these games. I spent soooo many hours with my brother playing both The Two Towers and Return of the King. RoTK is definitely the better of the two, but I was utterly crushed when I found out I couldn't play Boromir in EITHER game. In TTT he was in the game as an NPC, and in RoTK it was even more egregious because you could play as literally every single member of the Fellowship BUT Boromir, so I was stuck with shitty Faramir (who was just a copy of Aragorn). But it was still so much fun. We got so good at getting perfect every time we ran out that we just had perfect scores every time we played. So much fun. I miss games like this. The one thing I would have changed would have been making Boromir playable. Le sigh.

So I missed out on Star Wars Galaxies when it first came out way back in the day. A bunch of my friends were playing it, but I wasn't at a point where I could afford to pay a monthly fee for a game. Then when the NGE update happened they all quit, as did a bunch of other people apparently.

Well now I finally have my chance! I've been messing around on SWG Emu with my friend who played it back in the glory days, and he says it's just like he remembers it. And it's free to boot!

From their FAQ page: [le snip]

You can find their install guide here

If you see some guy named Carmichael Burnswell wandering around Mos Eisley, that's me.

I've been following this for a long time, having been a major SWG addict back in the pre-CU/CU days. It's basically almost the same game now, and it's nice to be able to go back and explore again. I'm not sure what their plans are after the game is complete in terms of additional content or what, but I'm excited for the future.

My lad was playing LEGO City Undercover solidly when it was first released. From the bits I've seen, it looks like a lot of fun, and the city is a big place to explore. The story has a lot of humour as well, I've spotted the odd parody of Dirty Harry and Shawshank Redemption in there.
I watched the Zero Punctuation on that last night. He thought it was odd that a kids game would include references to movies they haven't/shouldn't have seen at their age. I agree somewhat. I love the LEGO games, it's just hard to tell who they're aimed at. The licensed games are aimed at fans of those movies/comics, but what about this one?

I like those kinds of references, even if you're a little kid who doesn't understand them, they're presented in such a way that they're still funny/entertaining for youngsters, and then when they grow up a bit and have seen these films, the references will click, or they'll go back and replay the game and the references will make sense. I know I've replayed a lot of games as a more worldly adult that I played when I was a kid and found a bunch of great references I'd missed when I was younger.

I have played this game with pencil and paper (you roll it between rounds).

The longer the paper the more amusing the results (though they tend to involve penises and bees).

Best party game ever.
