I was going to use ImgBurn to create an ISO to burn, but I noticed Empire (and RotJ) only have BDMV directory, no CERTIFICATE folder like in the SW ISO. Will there be issues playing them on blu-ray players without it?

Should I just create the folder, with subfolder BACKUP?

Empire and ROTJ are AVCHDs.  Strict AVCHDs don't need a CERTIFICATE folder.  Only blu rays need a CERTIFICATE folder.

So for Empire and RotJ I should just direct ImgBurn to the BDMV directory, create the ISO and then burn that to DVD9? If the CERTIFICATE folder is unnecessary, then why was it included in the Star Wars ISO?

Please send me the PM too. I would like to know. I don't have a Bluray to test, but they the stream files work on VLC. Should I just burn the BDMV to a DVD9 and call it day?

Cheers!

OK, Harmy, first of all, this is the beginning of the ultimate restoration of one of the best science fiction films of all time. That being said, I have a few notes, since this is just a workprint.

1. The colors are not as saturated as I'd like. It's too '04 for my tastes. I just recommend you cut back on green a bit and up the saturation.

2. The Han/Leia hallway argument is too bright. It was a moody scene originally, as seen in the GOUT insert at the top. Just take down the brightness slightly.

Other than that, good on 'ya!! The TB and GOUT footage is pretty near seamless. I just hope team_negative1 gets a higher quality version of that Wampa cave shot.

 Best wishes, Harmy. -Tack

Harmy, I was curious how you're approaching the color-correction this time around? I recently watched a bit of 1.0 and was amazed already at the difference I saw between your workprint of v2 and your old version.

Are you using any specific sources? Could - or Did - Youtoo do his magical crushed black color correction like he did on ANH?

No, it's just that I'm using a fairly recent version of AE this time instead of PowerDirector, so I have many more useful tools to play with.

Good to know you have better tools! I was also wondering how you were making the color choices you're making? Are you comparing the GOUT? A film source? An LD source?

Color boosted GOUT mainly and from time to time a compare to PSB and the 97SE as well.

Looking at the crawl again, it looks like there's some light bleeding in from the edge of the frame in the lower-right corner, and that abruptly disappears around frame 2696 or so (not exact, that was my reaction time for hitting pause).

The crawl looks kinda bleedy overall to me.

Apparently the overall bleediness is present on all transfers so is probably just the way it was (see last page or so).  The edge-bleed is probably caused by the loose framing (the same thing that causes the rounded corners), but the fact that it suddenly disappears seems odd to me, like it was painted out.  Then again, some extra Star Destroyer engines suddenly disappear too and that was theatrical, so maybe this is all normal.  Hard to tell though, because I'm not sure any previous transfer was framed quite this wide, so there might not be any way to check.

No, you don't need the certificate folder, just the BDMV will be fine and no playback issues to worry about.

Here are some comparison pics for the WP:

All I can gather is that the bottom pics are from the BD.  I know I should probably know what the top two are but could you please be kind and enlighten me?

Top: GOUT

Middle: Despecialized V2

Bottom: Blu-ray

Thanks for the comparison pics. I wasn't able to download the workprint as my bandwidth is low for the next few days.

I signed up and received the sign up emails with the link, which I clicked. But I didn't recieve the actual newsletter. I checked every mailbox I've got in my account and it's nowhere to be found.

If you signed up prior to the 31st, you should have received a copy.  There were a few that signed up on the evening of the 31st just slightly later than when it was sent out and also several more that have signed up since then.

A copy isn't sent out automatically when someone signs up, just a verification email, so hopefully you just missed the cut-off time and will receive the next edition.  That's why I provided a link to the browser version this time - in case there were late entries and also to let everyone else, who didn't sign up, see what they were missing.

If you want to PM me the email address you signed up with, I can check the date/time on the list for you to verify it.

Thanks!

Thanks Harmy for the comparison pics :). I'm just curious about the colour reference for some of the shots that differ from the GOUT; for example pic (0-02-07-17) with the bright blue TIE fighters. Is that based on the 16mm print colours or something else entirely?
