I have been taken by the dark side

I hired the new dvds today (2 days before the "release") - I'm going to be spitting and choking through watching them... but must be informed.... uhhhhhh - and the bonus features will be good... I hope.

By hired, you mean, rented?
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. yeah. I hadn't seen those THINGS the stormtroopers are on in the movie in a long time (thanks to hating the 1997 SE). They were put straight into weekly hire, and the bonus disc is with return of the jedi (the movies are separate). Above is what Palpy says to Vader, now making Vaders line "search your feelings, you know it to be true" at the end of Empire completely stupid if you're watching it for the first time. Also all of the new effects (and I mean ALL) make it look like it doesn't belong in the film and draws me out of the experience. I'm ahead with the timeline too, so it's like 3 days before the official release in the US that I hired it - oh the irony. They just cracked their boxes open today!

What? Ian McDarmid is a good actor.

I'm surprised at how awful some things look. Han's dodge is dodgy, here's a full resolution screenshot showing the ligtsabre coloured in wrong:

It's just - CRAP. CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP

The Han dodge is truly weird. In a way, it looks better than the '97 SE, because at least he's reacting, but his face gets all shiny when the head moves in a very telling, "CG" way.

That, and I still don't get the stepping on Jabba's tail thing. It looks a hell of a lot better now, but it just doesn't make any sense. Would it kill Jabba to swing his tail out of the way when Han's walking around?

That´s it! I´ve made my decision. I´m NOT buying those DVD´s. That´s final. Lucas just lost one faithful customer. I´m gonna stick with my pretty darn good TR47 DVD-R´s and if the original unaltered movies come out later, in a few years maybe, and all those problems (Lucas meddling, audioproblems, visual inconsistencies and etc.) are not there, then I will definitely buy them. But I can´t stand those damn 2004 Special Editions. Lucas has lost his ones precious marbles!

Yeah, I noticed that too. It's not really green on my TV, it's more of a minty white. And it flickers. Looks like one of the mole people in Lucus's CGI slave dungeon didn't do their job. Whippings all around, I guess.

Why would they release something like that? It just looks very crap.

*edit.. and for the rest of the movie, it's blue. a very nice blue. but on the falcon, it's a minty green.
lightsabers, the fresh maker. whatever.

Well I like many others pre ordered and paid for them many moons ago to add to my LD, vhs and bootleg collection and they finally arrived this morning

*Advantage of being a freelance designer, worked stupid hours last week to have today off for the movie fest *

A brief review

What I like about them

The sound and the picture are truly wonderful

The Empire of Dreams documentry, not bad to watch until the the obligatory 20 min part where eveyone kisses his arse

Some of the dvd menu transitions are well thought out and pretty slick

The cool in production pics of carrie fisher in THAT outfit

What sucked

Its been a long time since I watched the 97 fubar edition and now I know why

the wampa scene sticks out like a sore thumb just cut in like it is

and as Daniel B said the "lets spell it out for the dumbass in the audeince" new emperor scene is cringeworthy

and the artwork is shameful

Did they fix the shot where the Executor rams into the Death Star? To me, it has always stood out as the worst effect in the whole trilogy, even above Obi-Wan's lightsaber flickering. If anything deserves a cgi overhaul, it's that.

Glad I'm not the only one who feels the "search your feelings...." line to be stupidly overused. Is it me, or did the old scene look and sound more like the Emperor than the Emperor?

wait, so they screwed up the colors of the lightsaber? that seems like sheer idiocy...

Yes your right the old Emperor did a better job , the old scene had more mystery, the hologram effect just looked better because it wasn't so clear.

Even if you don't care about that, about originality or anything and think the change should be allowed if it's half-decent, I think you'll still be disappointed. We didn't need to "know" how Vader found out who Luke is - nor does the Emperor need to prove he knows, it's just dumbing-down. But the Emperor now looks just like he does in ROTJ for anyone that cares about THAT.
Author

I don't even think he looks like in ROTJ. Am I the only one?
Author

Nope.... I still think the original one looks closer to the one in ROTJ.

Isn't it though. Darth Justin, I agree that it looks nothing like Palpy. The makeup's all wrong.

It seems like the new ESB hologram is too old. He looks younger in RotJ.

And that is really bad that they got the lightsaber color wrong... DID SOMEONE NOT PROOF-WATCH THESE DVDs before sending them out onto the market?

All my friends who are buying the DVDs think I'm crazy for not getting them as well. Boy are they in for a surprise. I got my 7-Disc set from TR47 last week thank you very much; no need for this crap.

I just can't believe they get waste their time on stupid stuff like Dewbacks, Diaognas, and Wampas, and when it comes time to fix something actually in need of an update, like the Emperor and the lightsabers, they TOTALLY botch it. Luke's lightsaber is GREEN?!?!? I guess the ILM employees who touched up ANH had only seen RotJ. I really am worried about the rumors of Vader's PINK saber now; these idiots are capable of anything. And the Emperor? It really is sad when an old woman, a chimpanzee, and a voice actor do a far superior job than the guy who plays Palpatine in the rest of the saga.

Don't blame Ian McDiarmid or even the latex FX guys I'm sure the differences between the quality of performances can be traced to the fact that the director of the injected DVD scenes sucks, whereas the original TESB director had real talent.
