Interesting idea, but it would raise the question of why Luke is lugging an empty suit of armor up the shuttle ramp as the DS is about to blow.

One word "Closure". lol

I went ahead and did the Vader force ghost idea. Wrong thread for it, will post in general.

Maybe so, but it's harder to have closure if you don't get off the exploding space station in time.

I've long wondered if Vader had a spare suit stashed away somewhere? Would help explain some of the visual differences between the films.

Where were you in '77?

I personally go with the idea that Vader's had to replace/repair/modify his attire between films.

I think it's important that Vader (as represented by the suit) is totally destroyed before Anakin is free to return at the end in spirit.

I thought that was the point of pyre before Qui-Gon needed one.

Bah!

So you're saying we should watch them "Episode 8, Jedi, Episode 7, Empire, Sith, Episode 0 (so a prequel to the prequels huh?), Episode 9" Hmm, what a weird way of watching?? Skip ANH and the first two prequels? Interesting... LOL, I get the song reference.

Harrison Ford successfully bribed $1000 dollars to spill the beans on the new Star Wars.

That was great!

Anyone have a full transcript of that? I can't watch videos right now.

Word on the street is that Disney's planning to release this thing in December of 2015. Way less competition at the box office and more time to finish the movie.

I guess it's too late for them to push it back to May of 2016 (which the traditionalists in all of us would prefer) after spouting a date of 2015 in every single proclamation since the Disney deal was announced back in October. Also, yeah, I guess they like money a lot. Even if May of 2016 is still an empty playing field, it'll fill up fast. December of '15, on the other hand, isn't likely to be crowded with anything other than oscar-bait.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the original film not start shooting until March of '76??? I realize they still need to iron out the script, but whatever happened to all this talk of making it "the old-fashioned way?"

As for box office competition, I would've thought they'd like the idea of releasing Avengers 2 and Ep7 at opposite ends of May, guaranteeing first place for well over a month. I guess spreading things out makes a little more sense, though.

Anyway, nothing official yet, just a rumor.

I say screw tradition. December 2015 sounds like an optimum time for release.

December 2015 would very nicely fill The Hobbit shaped void left from christmas 2014. The Xmas after LOTR:ROTK sucked ass, this time we'll have something even better to look forward too the year after!

That doesn't jive with all of the Celebration VII announcements. It's been said all over that Celebration VII will "coincide with the release of Episode VII."

I really hope there won't be any old characters coming back as force ghosts. That was one of the things I really liked about Zahn's books - he recognized the stupidity of the scene in ROTJ, where Obi-Wan, instead of being a disembodied voice or a flickering apparition, appeared as a ghost to rest his but on a stone and have a whole expository conversation with Luke and so Zahn had Obi-Wan appear to Luke one last time telling Luke that he's moving on and Luke will have to deal with what's coming on his own.

It really cheapens the death of a character, when you  can just bring them back whenever it's convenient - it kinda worked in ESB, because it was handled pretty tastefully but I think that on the whole, it's a pretty cheap plot device and it would be even worse to use it just to give the dead characters some kind of a cameo. Plus, imagine the horror if they brought Hayden back as Anakin's ghost... Urgh!

Well I just don't see how it worked in ESB and not in ROTJ. I think it worked well overall.

It was only ruined by the Hayden, which is by far the worst change to OT.

Besides, according to the annotated edition, Zahn did it because he wanted Luke to be totally on his own as a Jedi -- and not the last of the old, but the first of the new. It also set up the whole Joruus C'baoth thing, by making Luke absolutely desperate for guidance from another Jedi.

Well, exactly - no convenient advice from a long dead person - he has to deal with the challenges on his own.

If we start seeing a bunch of force ghosts in the ST, then I won't even bother cause that tells me they have run out of ideas and this won't be anymore original then the PT was.

The force ghost was a cool concept that Lucas eventually ruined.  It was cool to see Kenobi as a force ghost in ESB to lead Luke to Dagobah and then comment on him leaving to fight Vader.  Then he appears and sits down in Jedi like a real life person???  Then you have Hayden as a young force ghost, but Kenobi and Yoda are old force ghosts in the new ending to Jedi???

This is another example of the more you delve into something mystical like this, the more it loses its luster.  The same with the force, as it was mystical in the OT, and when it was explained in the PT, it opens up all sorts of questions.

I have to say I was hopeful of the ST a few months ago, but I am starting to sour on it now, as I think it will be the same old same old.

Ben's ghost in ANH and ESB worked as a guide for Luke, to lead him to Yoda and try and encourage him to stay there.

He seemed reluctant to be seen in ESB, preferring the voice in the head routine.

I can imagine a scenario where such an ability could be terrifying if learned by someone like Palpatine.

He could gently guide Jedi novices to their doom while pretending to be Ben or Anakin.

Maybe having the frightening Freddy style reveal of the phantom prune face just as some young Padwan is on the edge of a cliff.

Spookyness was only done once in the whole saga (the cave dream) and that was the dark side messing with Luke's head.

I wouldn't be put off by the use of the idea just by a ROTJ style ghost butt approach to it.

Bah, the current rumors alone aren't worth getting upset over.

We won't even get the batsh*t insane level rumors until they actually start shooting anyway.

Who wants to start a betting pool on when the first fake script shows up? ;)

Well the force always had an explanation. It's just that the PT explanation basically contradicts that of the OT. Essentially the force in the OT is a tool, known to the informed, available to everyone even if they don't know it. The more you work at it the more skilled you get at utilizing that tool. Thus the more you become capable of accomplishing with the force. You can use it for good or evil.

PT explanation, "yeah whatever fuck that work hard nonsense. You ain't got the midiclorians you ain't got force access. Bacteria baby! Bacteria grants you force access! Get more bacteria or get the fuck out."

Well, seeing as how the first Hobbit movie sucked and from the trailer it seems that the second one is going to suck even harder, and we don't know how good/bad Ep.7 will be, it is a distinct possibility ;-)

The last three Star Wars movies sucked, and the one before that was mediocre.

The ST is shaping up to be pretty awesome, if you ignore the BS rumors of force ghosts and Palpatine and such.

I know it's tempting to say that because the PT sucked, then the ST is quite likely to suck too.

But I don't buy that, the PT was a perfect storm of awfulness on every creative level. It's just not possible to be that bad again. The only thing the PT pulled off with style was in creating a roadmap for future filmmakers like JJ showing them how NOT to make a Star Wars film. I think the whole film world has learnt from that chapter in history and will do everything it can to see it is never repeated.
