THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released) — Page 57

Wow, that is early! Many interesting things about it...

"4EB"- Still the full student film title.

"108 minutes of the future" - they already had the running time set in stone?! Little did they know that it would ultimately be cut down to 81 minutes by stupid Warner executives.

"bart patton - a COPPOLA COMPANY" - I know who Bart Patton is (he was a director and friend of Coppola at UCLA and he helped produce Rain People) but was this the first name American Zoetrope went under or something else? Never heard the name before. EDIT: Bart Patton did apparently do some voice work for THX 1138.

"Warner Bros. - Seven Arts" - means the ad is from '69 at the latest, as that was the year it was acquired by Kinney.

Oh, hi btw. Sorry for my absence again, work and private life is killing me at the moment. :(

How's the THX 1138 preservation coming along?

That's a quite demonstrative picture of where the project is at. ;)

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Agreed. That guy said it[Lucas' changes] "kept the integrity of the film."

I am not sure what integrity he is referring to; all the changes made me cringe and scratch my head. I can understand if someone were to say that the changes reflected Lucas' original vision for the film, e.g. that certain sequences were put back in logical order before the studio put their hands on it. But I cannot understand how injecting CGI into the film, or opening up the claustrophobic setting with windows and cathedral-like spaces, helped preserve the quality of it.

I really felt the changes were afterthoughts and/or desperate measures, i.e. they took the opportunity of digitizing it to splash CGI here and there in hopes of "revitalizing" an old Sci-Fi flick the new generation might enjoy. For example, the car chase was unnecessary and was only done to make it more exciting. The rat to scorpion-thingy made me laugh. But the biggest desecration in my opinion was how the underground world no longer felt small and confined; instead, it felt large and expansive. I guess in this sense "integrity" means impaired judgement.

I was afraid of that.  :)

I think i read a review of the film by the guy who interviewed Lucas.  Gene Youngblood. Not sure if i am remembering right it was a long long time ago.

Once the LD transfer is finished, since we keep running into brick "coily" walls, is there a reason why we don't take a look at utilizing the BD transfer as a source for a reconstruction ala DeSpecialized? I never even considered the BD due to it being the same DC master, but that may be the only way to get more detail and to get away from the inherent defects of the LD master itself.

Call it the "Buy more. Buy more now. Buy more and be happy" Edition. ;)

I'm going to capture this once I get my Panasonic LX-900 back from Duncan.

I'd be willing to TooT it if someone can help me track down two more cheap copies.

I'll need the help. It was exhausting and expensive to find 3 Technidisc-pressed copies of the Star Wars SWE trilogy.

(That's 9 LD movies x 3 sides each = 27 captures to do!)

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

IIRC, it was discussed, but the extensive editorial and CGI changes to the film make it difficult, if not impossible. We can't use shots that aren't even there any more. :(

One or two shots, (like the albino lizard) *might* be fixable using the old Japanese pan and scan LD...

Just to let people know, I'll pass the torch to Spaced Ranger who was kind and offered to help out with this. That is great as I rarely find the time and motivation on this these days. And I'm sure he'll do a great job and gets things moving on this ever delayed project. Fresh blood is what this project needs...

When it has already taken this long, I was suggesting that we may as well start from scratch and do this right, so I asked SilverWook if he would like to do a fresh cap and also Antcufaalb who also seem to have some fine gears for capture. Luckily both agreed but at the moment they don't know when they will be able to...

I'll be on the lookout for it. Again, thanks for the willingness to help out with this. Much appreciated. :) I'm also willing to pay if there's financial issues.

I hope when you're tanned, rested, and ready you'll consider working on a less stressful project in the future. The test clips you posted looked great, better than my original captures. You deserve a lot of credit no matter who takes this project up that final ladder climb to the surface. Not to mention what you did with the mystery Italian Cut.

I got a couple things on the back burner that are mercifully free of the need for Laserdisc captured video. ;)

I am not watching that auction. I actually had that copy about ten years ago, but sold it a few years back. At the time I did not have a LD player, however, a friend of mine did and I watched it on his. I remember it playing back reasonably well, and thinking I how much I enjoyed it over my worn out VHS; of course if there were any hiccups I either didn't notice them or simply attributed them to his player.

If other LD's have the same hiccups in the same places as mine did when digitized, we might finally know what exactly has been giving msycamore headaches.

The hiccups are capture related, missing fields and frames at different places between the captures, nothing wrong with the actual LD's. Well, besides "Coily" but I guess he could be present on the o-neg anyway.

Can you give me the exact time references, so I can try a recapture when I'm ready? If there's something wrong in my pipeline, the sooner I find it the better.

I'd kiss a shell dweller to lay my hands on a decent widescreen print at this point.

BTW, I got someone to ask about THX over at the Warner Archive Twitter, but no response as of yet...

I could but as the issue apparently appeared randomly between your captures I'm afraid that any time references wouldn't be of any help to you if you would attempt a new cap. :( Another problem, is the culprit the LD player (8210) or your DVD-recorder? Don't know what would be the best way to find out...

*cymbal-hit* Thanks for the intro, msycamore. Glad to help.

"It would be nice to have three additional officers."
As I PM'ed to msycamore, I would use some of my free time (little as it is) to get this moving according to his design. My thinking was to have it organized like a parallel development so that anyone can drop his work into it or pull the need-work sections out of it, for those who could get it done better/faster. (My resources are more limited than most, so I'll need help with the logistics of moving things around.)

"I want to help you. You can help me. Here. Take a biscuit."
Also, with the possibility of new/renewed sourcing, much of the make-work/fix-ups, with which msycamore had to deal, can hopefully be eliminated.

"The new alignment!"
Once I confer with msycamore, I'll post the layout and what can be done as mentioned in previous posts (great work you all have done / are doing).

Or the D704? Maybe I ought try the analog input on my DV camcorder...
