Trailer for the forthcoming "The Star Wars" comic based on Lucas' original concepts. That Luke Skywalker guy looks awfully familiar!

Not fond of the "Lucas as Luke" design, but I'm loving the all-red lightsabers.

I don't know why not. In the story he plays the Obi-Wan role.

If anyone's interested, if you create a free Dark Horse account you can read the preview here.

I've screen grabbed the 4 preview pages if anyone wants a peak. Looks like it's gonna be fantastic with what has at least the appearance of traditionaly inked artwork (Might just be very good digital work). Some excellent costume and set designs...

At this early script stage, George's influence from Frank Herbert's 'Dune' is alot more transparent. Like "Chrome Companies" instead of "Choam Company". The dialogue seems a bit ropey, infact it reminds me of the prequels somewhat. However just for the historical interest and artwork, if nothing else, I'm buying this comic for sure.

Lets just say that I'm long past the point of seeing Lucas as the heroic type.

Cool to see the original concept Falcon making an appearance. Again feels very PT, the kid even shouts "Yippee!"

Yeah, I know - I have read the original script, after all. Still, I expected a little sanding down of the story's rough edges, so to speak, during the process of adapting it for the comic.

If they change it too much, then is it really the Star Wars that might have been? The whole point of this endeavor is giving us the look and feel of the proto SW universe Lucas was trying to imagine back in the early 70's, warts, "ropey dialogue" and all.

Can't wait till they get to scary looking Chewie.

Yes, I'd prefer they change nothing then we can get an interesting glimpse into the early stages of George's thoughts. The dialogue is going to be less than perfect by default because this is before it was improved into what we know.

Anybody know if (Early Falcon aside) the artists are just making it up or are there known 'early concept sketches'/'detailed descriptions in the script' of how things should look.

Even from these 9 pages I'm forming the opinion that George based the PT heavily on the leftover elements from this script (Minus the already used OT elements). Notice the planet called Utapau, later used in ROTS.

btw That ship from the first title page reminds me of something, but can't quite put my finger on it.

^ That stuff is all for the actual film. It's more or less (Or even exactly) what we saw on screen.

^ This one is in there. The costume on the left is in those 9 panels almost exactly. Wonder if early-comic Chewie and R2 will look like this. It seems like mid-75 stuff, after that McQuarrie and Co seem to have started locking down the final designs.

Wonder if Yoda in his more Gnome-ish guise will be in the comic...

^I think the one on the right would make a great Yoda.

^ You're right about the Flash Gorden influence all right. The Emperor in the comic is very Ming The Merciless.

Got it! That spacecraft from the first panel was reminding me of this from Alien 4...

Ryan, mind showing me when Han wore blue and wielded a lightsaber in the movie then? ;)

That was all I could find on short notice, Ralph did do paintings of the original Falcon design and such. Why they were not included in the portfolio back in the day, I have no idea.

As Yoda sprung up out of the need to complete Luke's training after George decided to kill off Ben during filming, (notice Obi Wan is in the medal ceremony painting) I don't think he's showing up.

Oh yeah you're right, I didn't notice the detail in that 9th Stormtrooper painting.

Right again on Yoda. I've heard George talking about originally not killing Obi-Wan.

Would be great if they did a comic on a first/early draft of the PT. With older Anakin lusting for power instead of fearing loss, Anakin being a teenager wise beyond his years in TPM, Obi-Wan being almost twice the age and essentially playing the Qui-Gon role, Qui-Gon being younger than Obi-Wan and a minor character, Palaptine being Anakin's father, the Jedi all wearing black, Darth Maul being a strange alien, TPM called 'The Beginning' etc etc

^ Funny that alot of what I hear about these early drafts sounds better than the finished product. Would've probably still been a disaster though.

^ This older Obi-Wan looks spot on.

^ Less keen on this younger Ralph Fiennes Obi-Wan (Still better than the movie)

I like this design, personally - well, aside from the silly-looking "flipped around question mark" tattoo, anyway.

Interesting idea I've had since noticing that the Alderaan is the Capital of the Universe in the comic.

Would have been a cool PT idea if Alderaan was once the planet where the Republic Royal Family lived (Princess Leia being the latest in the line). For generation's they ruled in Peace as nominal heads of state with the Republic Senate alongside. Kinda like ancient Rome.

When the Emperor took over he moved his capital to his home planet, like Stalin building Stalingrad. He deposed the Galactic Royal Family but left them inplace on Alderaan, not then having the strength and support from all the systems to have them openly killed.

So it would be entirely natural that come ANH with the old Senate finally swept away, that he would use the Death Star to crush his old enemies. As far as I recall, there's nothing in the OT to contradict this idea. In which case I might start belieaving that Leia is the "Once and Future (Queen)" of the universe, in my own personnal imagination ;-)

As much as I dislike the PT, this is the one time that Lucas got it right by not using Alderaan as a main planet.  Sadly, he got it wrong by making Anakin from Tatooine.

Luke and Leia were supposed to be hidden from the Emperor and Vader, and the fact that they put Luke on the SAME planet his father was born is pretty stupid if you asked me.  By not having Alderaan as a main planet in the PT, it atleast jives with them hiding Leia as Vader or The Emperor have no ties there and would be harder to sense her.
