It's more one of those other big budget sci fi movies, like Stargate or The Fifth Element, that were good but didn't really stay in the public consciousness.

Comparing Stargate to Bizarro Trek, are we? Well, I know how to cope with disingenous statements like that ...

To be fair, Stargate has stayed in the public eye pretty well... but a lot of that has to do with the 10+ years of TV shows it spawned. The movie itself is kind of a footnote to the series at this point, and it's not something you're likely to hear a random person gushing about. Heck, I see more people talking about The Fifth Element online, even though I'd say Stargate is much better as a serious movie (although TFE is an incredibly fun, lighthearted sci-fi film. They're tough to compare directly.) It wasn't necessarily a direct quality comparison, just about the way the movies were received and their legacy.

Just had a thought, I can't remember the plot of Star Trek Into Darkness, I enjoyed it at the time, but now I'm starting to think that the film wasn't that great at all, fantastic effects, but really stupid film, who's fault was that, the writer obviously, but it was JJ's movie

I've got a bad feeling about this, I hope it passes

J

Yeah well JJ may be out as director of star trek 13 but that does not me Orci and Kurtzman are fired in fact they were just hired for the third film.

Lindelof is out of their third trek effort.  None of this thread related really other than JJ being the producer of what they are calling star trek 3 but star trek III already exists.

Nor am i excited by the fact that they are considering the person who directed rise of the planet of the apes.

Star trek into darkness was very uneven in quality while 2009 was overall solid in direction if not in nonsensical plotting.

Don't think i will see the next trek the dark one was a bore and the retreads of a classic film unwarranted.  Honestly felt like they tried batman nolan style in outer space that is not star trek.

Arguably, Stargate is better known in it's tv incarnations than the movie that inspired it. (The only pop culture reference to the film I've ever seen was in a South Park episode.) How many people think of the Robert Altman film when M.A.S.H. is mentioned today?

Sadly, I've seen evidence that Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible films are better known than the classic tv show that it's based on, so it cuts both ways.

Will be interesting to see if anything of note is announced at Disney's D23 expo this weekend.

I'm of that age where remembering films starring Donald Sutherland's arse cheeks is sort of unavoidable.

And the theme to the film has the memory aid of lyrics and pretty unforgettable ones at that.

I prefer the television show (without the laughter track) but I remember them both pretty much equally.

Fantasy M.A.S.H would have been the movie with the TV cast but with Elliot Gould. Gotta have Alan Alda doing Groucho impressions. Although Sutherland did the cocktails routine better.

if they'd done a SW TV show back in the day wonder who would have been cast?

Peter Falk as Obi-Wan.

Is it more than a little weird the way nobody is really acknowledging that George Lucas said, flat out, that the original 3 are in the movie. How long ago was that? Is he just losing his marbles? What is the P.R. advantage of ignoring and or contradicting that, unless something weird is going on.

It's news like this that makes it hard for me to keep my disenchantment with that cheap, derivative Star Trek knockoff from descending into outright hatred.

I only hope that when the Stargate franchise gets its inevitable reboot, the people they put in charge of it takes it back to its roots and jettisons all that bullshit about English speaking aliens and ascended superhumans.

It's the silly games studios and P.R. departments play all the time. They want a big event with lots of reporters and cameras when they make what we already know "official".

I actually hope George will keep stealing their thunder. ;)

I have to wonder if Harrison Ford is not under contract yet, and that is what is causing the delay?  Of course the first issue would be about money, but the second issue would be what Han Solo's role in the film would be?  Would Ford come back just for a cameo, or would he want a decent part in the ST?

i think he is waiting for the script.

I really hope he doesn't die in SW 7. I can't see them doing that with a Han Solo standalone movie coming out the following year.

As long as it doesn't star the character pre-Star Wars. I can just imagine it, "The Adventures of Han Solo, starring Chris Pine!"

Edit: Of course, they already made that one, it was called Star Trek and it came out in 2009.

I'd rather see the adventures of Chris Pine starring Han Solo.

It has come to my attention that people are defending Alien 3 on this website. The movie sucked. It was a boring retread of the original without the terror, suspense or interesting artistic designs. Plus, no pulse rifles.

Re: JJ. He is a good director. The Star Trek reboots had poor scripts.  SW7 will sink or swim based on the script.

Does sound unlikely but then again, Spock stopping mid-action to phone his future self from a paralel universe for tips and hints seemed unlikely in STID lol

If only all actors thought as Viggo Mortensen does.

Jackson - "We want you for a cameo in The Hobbit!"

Viggo - "But Aragorn isn't in The Hobbit?!?"

Stay on topic...

Also, the latest rumor to pull hair out over?

http://www.jedinews.co.uk/news/news.aspx?newsID=12985

So, as a Force ghost? That would be sweet for me to do a "War of the Stars III", lol, but other than that I don't know if I'm pleased with this rumor. It sounds cheap to bring back the Emperor. On the other hand, Ian was one of the only actors who seemed to fully enjoy playing in the prequels and some scenes with him are part of the few redeeming points of the PT.

Could just be a cameo in an old hologram anyway. Not sure that the casting of Ian would ever be known if the return of the Emperor is a key point of the plot. They would keep it as secret as possible.

I don't think Sith can appear as ghosts. Hologram or a Sith holocron image is another matter entirely.

When asked at the convention about a role in Episode 7, Ian said that it is unlikely, however he agreed to say that a spin off about the Emperor would be interesting.

So that casting rumor could be about one of the spin off movies that Kasdan and co. are working on. (by the Kasdan is not working on Episode 7, right? Is he?) (EDIT: IMDB: Kasdan: creative consultant. nevermind)

Sorry but what?!?!

Is having the Skywalker family in it not enough?

Let's have Palpatine come out of the shower in the first scene of EpVII and realise the end of ROTJ was just a dream.

Given the creating life, avoiding death, etc discussion of ROTS, it's really not all that crazy that Palpatine could still be around in some form (see: Lord Voldemort), especially with the whole Ghost Jedi thing apparently being a pretty new idea.
