there has been some news that the upcoming 3D BD of Predator will feature a new transfer but we’ll have to wait and see in December

is there any HD transfers out there that aren’t an eyesore to watch in the meantime?

The original MPEG-2 BD could certainly be improved on, but it looks all right.  If you can't wait for December, buy that rather than the Ultimate Hunter Edition, which has excessive DNR.

They both look crap. The UH version thought offers more detail even thought it's DNRed. People mistake mpeg2 compression artefacts with grain for the first issue, and this help hide the lack of detail.

well, to be fair... the old mpeg2 bd is currently the best hd release of the movie. the uh-version should be avoided unless one does prefer a perfectly waxy, erm i mean clean picture.

Exactly, the artifacting was way overblown and it at least looks like an 80's movie shot on shitty stock

Not having high hopes for a 3D BD. Wouldn't be surprised if it was heavily DNR'ed to improve the 3D effect. Just like Jurassic Park, unfortunately, though that wasn't DNR'ed so bad.

I was hoping there was a better HDTV capture out there in all honesty

The 3D trailer for Jurassic Park wasn't DNR'd so bad, but the BD release was horrible!

The MPEG2 Predator, while not perfect, is perfectly watchable and better than anything else available.  The audio is a lot of fun.

3D?  Yikes...it's going to look like shit in 3D.

What about color timing?

Never saw it theatrically, and I have no film print for reference.  It's anyone's guess how accurate it is.  It has the feel of a mid 80s action/sci-fi film though.  It feels period accurate.  The MPEG2 version that is...

It's times like these that I am happy to own a laserdisc machine and a copy of the movie that's getting treated like a red-headed stepchild on Bluray.

:)

Exactly I have seen it at many shows and it always looked like the MPEGII release, if it was on a BD50 no one would care.

MPEGII gets an unfair bad rap

I read somewhere that the new 3D version has "only" the first 20 minutes with DVNR, while the rest of the movie is (almost) free ot it... can someone confirm that?

Not true. Check this comparison.

It's the exact same master used for UH edition, except it's more cropped on the sides but less on top and bottom. And of course some digital alterations if you check shots 3, 7, 12-16. Horrible.

So it's better to stick to MPEG2 BD, right?

Some Team Blu ideas about this title?

For what it's worth, I did see a 35mm screening of this movie back in 2012. I looked at the MPEG2 BD for comparison, and it didn't look significantly different in terms of color timing. The only striking difference is that still frame shot near the end of the movie which looks very static on the BD. It looked less jarring on the print, presumably, because of the extra layer of grain.

Yeah, the MPEG2 BD is the best there is. And even with the compression I personally think it looks great.

And nope, there's nothing we could do to improve it.

Another vote for the MPEG2 BD.  I've been very happy with how it looks, and I wish more releases were treated this way (that is, not being screwed up).

That’s impossible, even for a computer.

The MPEGII would make it look more static also

Or at least offer people a choice, with all films.

Look at this screenshot comparison between the UH 2D Vs 3D: in particular, Arnold's hair and the tree on the center-right... any explanation?

The hair and tree changed shape to allow for some of the 3D effects.
