Changes in 2004 DVDs — Page 39

Why in the hell are they removing sound effect?! The sound was one of the things that made the films so original. Ben Burtt said in an interview that they wouldn't throw out the sound for the Special Editions and look what happens...

On a similar note, one of my favorite sounds in the OT was actually Vader's "Arrrgh!!" when he is knocked off the edge of the Carbon Freezing Chamber. As you may or may not know, this was changed in the Special Edition (possibly a product of alternate audio tracks). So instead of that awesome snarl, we get the same lame sound Vader makes when Luke sends a plume of Tibanna gas (or whatever lol) at him. Anyone else agree this was a bad change?

Yeah it was changed to "urghh". What the hell?? Why? It was brilliant the way it was, why fix it (or in this case replace it) if it sure as hell ain´t broken??

Still can't notice that change.

Maybe you should re-watch the original version then. I notice it and it bugs the crap out of me. Vader ends up repeating the same "errgghh!" twice.

I watched the movies a bunch as a kid but after not seeing them for years how can I remember the difference between Uhhhh and Arahhh. Its really the most irrelevent change. Changes I did notice was the improvents to Hoth battle, new wampa, new Yavin, new explosions, new sarlacc, and living cities rather then abandoned ones. I noticed and loved all of these. I also noticed all the slight dialog changes but not something like Arahh and Uhhh.

It was just as obvious to me as if they were to change what he sounds like after Luke strikes his shoulder (now he truly sounded like a monster there). The "Arrrggh!!" was also used in that awesome Energizer Bunny commercial after his lightsaber loses power. But then again that commercial also had the original Emperor in it...good times.

I was really excited the first time I saw the LD's I have. It was the first time I saw the Original Versions in widescreen since the theater. I noticed details and sounds that I hadn't before. It was like Christmas

I think the people that coplain about the changes to the flims for the dvds die hard fans of star wars. Look george lucas is the one who made these flims not skywalker469. He's making the changes so that he can tie in the pt together with the ot. If some of you people don't like the changes then too bad. May be someday in 2007 george lucas will release the original version of these flims. I like the changes to the films for the dvds and I can't wait till Tuesday to watch them all.

That's one side of the argument. In fact, I read that abysmal IGN review of the trilogy set and essentially the EXACT same thing you just said was there. Hmm...

Anyway, like I was saying. There are three sides in this battle:

The OT Purists:

"The originals are the real versions! SE sucks!"

The Lucas Fanboys:

"George Lucas is the artist of our time, man. These are his works of art and he can do what he wants with them..."

And of course, the Non-Alligned:

"Well, I liked the SE, some of the changes weren't that great. but I think the original versions should be released too..."

Where do you fall in?
Author
Time
Somewhere in between non-aligned and purist:

There were indeed improvements to the SEs, but the various changes that affected the storyline (e.g., Greedo shoots first) were not among them, and Jabba in ANH just did NOT work.

I think the OT as it was in 1977/80/83 should be released on DVD; and optionally, a cleaned-up version, but with no new stuff.

I agree the original version should be released may be in 2007 after the pt is done.

I think Im leaning more towards the purist position. Im nowhere near a fanboy of GL. I recently read the side-by-side of the new DVDS compared to the OTR and the changes dont seem as drastic as forecast. Im by no means saying that these new versions are excusable...

I think if you had the Original Theatrical versions, just cleaned up like they did the new DVDs, with the lovely Dolby, etc. but didnt make any changes to the movie itself (scenes, music, lightsabers) that would be the pinnacle.

Anyone who hasnt seen that side-by-side its on digitalbits. I felt a bit of relief after reading the changes/comparison.

Admittedly, im buying the DVDs on tuesday, I cant rationalize to myself why I shouldnt. I think that even if everyone on this site didnt buy the DVDs they would still do incredibly. I just hope that one day GL wakes the **** up and releases the OTRs on DVD...until then Ill just close my eyes when Greedo shoots first.

Yea I have to admit the only change I did'nt like was greedo shooting first in ANH. And I'm glad they took luke's scream out in ESB.

"Luke's" scream was just as bad as Greedo shooting first to me. It completely f'd up the scene and was just plain goofy. I never saw ESB:SE when it was released so when I saw it on video it was ridiculous. I mean, maybe if it was Mark Hammil's voice going "Never!!!" it would've been tolerable...What am I saying, leave them alone!!

I'm a die hard purist and prequel hater. Always have been and always will be. Someone has to be the Anti-Lucas. Until he starts putting out the Original Versions, he won't get one red cent from me. I also will not have very much nice to say about him until that time.

Also, the more Lucas fanboys and apoligists I see, the more I dislike him.

I'm a purist 100%. Japanese Anime has to be in Japanese, I have to watch Das Boot in German, Crouching Tiger has to be in Chinese (Madarin), black & white films have to stay in black & white, and all films have to be presented in their original aspect ratio. On the flipside, I have no problems with artists making changes to their own works as long as their original works are made available along with the revisions.

Interesting you mention keeping Japanese anime in Japanese as I'm a fansubber. XD Just released a subbed musical about a week ago.

first off i am a 100% purist but i have nothing against him changing his movie as long as he makes the original available....

second i just have to make a quick statement here....

Quote

He's making the changes so that he can tie in the pt together with the ot. If some of you people don't like the changes then too bad. May be someday in 2007 george lucas will release the original version of these flims.

1 - Lucas should have filmed the PT to flow better with the OT.... not do it backwards... but if he wants to do it this way he should expect some sort of outrage by fans like it or not...

2 - im sick of fanboys saying "well if you dont like it than TS!"
jimbo said it in one thread and now its been said again...
i just want to set the record straight here because these sort of statements are pissing me off...

you guys can only say that because your versions you enjoy are being released...
if the tables were turned you guys would be the ones bitching that he's only making the originals available and that they look dated...
but futhermore you guys say this like you are some sort of die hard fan????
but in reality the die hard fans are the ones who saw the movies in the theatres back in the 70s and 80s... the ones who grew up with the toys... the ones who collected every shitty product that Lucas has ever created... and the ones who actually give a shit that the man's true vision is almost extinct....

to those who don't support the OT on DVD and tell us to just suck it up.... are not fans at all...
your first SW film was prolly from the PT because you werent old enough when the OT was out.... or you were still collecting Poke e Mon when we were buying the Power of the Force action figures...

so bottom line is... all you kids out there who can tell us to stop our complaining and maybe one day we will get our movies, or telling us to re-edit the documentary with the current bootlegs can just all shut up already...

you comebacks are old and repetative and when i saw the OT you were still a twinkle in your fathers eye... so dont sit here and tell me you know what SW is...
i practically am these fucking movies....
so in closing....
rant over...

lol

oh ya and this was for all us OT fans who get pushed around by the man...

I totally agree but...I am only 17 and became a Star Wars fan when I was little. First movie=ROTJ taped off tv. First toys=flea market old figures. I collected all the figures from 1995 on but stopped around Episode I. I look at TPM and AOTC as entertaining movies at the time but subpar SW films now and I could give a damn. I may not have seen the originals when they were released in theaters but I saw them before the butcherng that was the SE. I have been a fan since I can remember and have liked almost no other franchise save Indy, Star Trek:TNG and Batman. I'm a purist in my own way that wants everyone happy.

My parents had the Star Wars bought tapes before I was born I watched them all the time as a kid. Those tapes were pan scan but I loved em. Today they have long worn out. They are so scratched up they are unwatchable. Thats what VHS does. Which is why I want these movies on DVD. A format that lasts. I was 9 when the Special Editions were released in theaters. That was the first time I saw them on the big screen. I loved seeing them on the big screen and I loved every single change. Since then I have turned against a couple of the changes but still consider them the superior version. I bought the VHS special edition still pan scan watched them only for a while and have recently sold them at a garage sale. Currently I don't have any watchable version of these movies but that will change in only too days. Damn I can't wait.

In reply to Luke's rant.

YES!!!

Here, here.

The true fans are still waiting for our OT to be released.

The apologists can suck it! (No biting.)
"The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country." - Goering.
