Listen, I have no problem with her being a slave, the issue for me is that Anakin never frees her, either on or off camera. So does anyone have any ideas on how to accomplish that?
If Anakin's to be the perfect knight by the code he shouldn't free her. He's not assigned to. In fact, he's supposed to look after Padmé and that's what he does.
He needs to have a vision and care or be trouble about it but to be stopped in his action by the superego of duty. After that he'll be remorseful forever, and that's a solid reason why to be so concerned about padmé.
I'd never have him go to tattoine in the middle act. Just have a dream, or a vision, or even a line about it when he's watching the horizon like vader does. Maybe the movie should end with anakin and padmé in tatooine instead of Naboo, with anakin kneeling in his mother's grave.
He has the vision, then the bunch of stuff, and then it all was true. The movie would end in a dark tone as Empire.
