As every 3D flick usually has a 2D version showing at the same multiplex, it's hardly a deal breaker.

I would at least hope it's shot in 3D instead of a conversion.

I'd hope for the opposite, actually - that way we'll have a well shot 2D version to enjoy in the short term (assuming we can find a 2D screening) and a film that will sit happily alongside the existing films when this ludicrous 3D bubble finally bursts.

Yes but it's increasingly the case that while your local multiplex will have both 3D and 2D. The 3D film willl be on at 12.00, 1.00, 2.00, 3.00, 4.00, 5.00, 6.00, 7.00, 8.00 and 9.00pm. The 2D will be on once a day on a medium size screen at 9pm. It's a simple scam, if you make seeing the film at half price difficult enough then people will just give in and pay double. I've seen it happen recently with STID, Man Of Steel and Iron Man 3.

And yes let's hope for a post conversion. Then we can ultimately just ignore the 3D version.

It really is annoying. Almost as if the 2D theatre is tucked away in some darkened corner of the complex. Rubbish strewn and neglected.

Talking pictures will die out first. Talk about a gimmick! ;)

A brief perusal of my local theater listings shows the 3D and 2D showings of the new Wolverine flick to be about equal in number and showtimes. One theater actually has more 2D showings. Maybe it varies by region or chain?

Did a google of 2D vs 3D online polls...

Results are about 50% upwards in favour of 2D with two as high as 82-87%. So if Multiplex's aren't trying to scam us all then out-of-ten there should about 7 2D screenings and 3 3D screenings. This is not the case.

As Silverwook said new flick The Wolverine seems to be showing 50/50 which is cool. Perhaps that film's distributers have stipulated this, in which case good on them. But even then, it should be 70/30.

I wanna see SWEpVII on a huge iMAX screen in 2D (and not digital iMAX btw). I'd pay triple to see that lol

I only watch films projected onto aged but clean theatrical-sized screens projected from film with decade-authentic bulbs.

I just got a bit sad, because I realized that I'll probably never see something decently projected on film again unless I go really early in a screening to my local theater, though I think they converted to digital recently, even then it's an awful theater to see stuff in. But I agree with Frink, I usually like 3D, unless it's conversion. Then it's just stupid, either because they didn't frame things for 3D, or they didn't care enough to shoot that way. Not sure what I hope for in Episode VII, though I lean towards 2D, for continuity in viewing experience, especially if they aren't going to ever get around to the 3D rereleases.

Fuck 3D! Solid interactive holographic surround imaging filmed in ultraviolet and infrared light is the way of the future!

I was being sarcastic. But if it's film you crave, go to an IMAX and see one of their classic documentaries. I mean a real IMAX, not the IMAX-branded garbage at a multiplex.

I  like 3D, I just bought a new TV that have active 3D on it and movies like Hugo and Dredd are absolutly great in that format. BUT... I am for everyone to have the choice. I know that one of the problem of the theatrical release of Dredd was that there were not so many 2D screenings.

So, I am in favor of 3D movies being made (when done right and when the material worths it) but I always want 2D screenings also available (there are also many people who simply can't see 3D at all because of eyes trouble for exmple) and if a movie is to be released in only one format, then 2D should always be the one.

As for Episode 7, I do think it will be 3D (I think they already said that it will be 3D, I must have heard it somewhere, maybe even in the first speach of the Disney's head, IIRC?). Part of me is interrested in watching a Star Wars in 3D (as long as it is not one of the prequels...) so I guess I'm going to watch it the first time in 3D, simply because that will be the way the movie is supposed to be seen. But I know I'm gonna also watch a 2D screening. Because somehow I feel it'll look more like "the Star Wars I know" instead of "the new 3D blockbuster". Hell, maybe I'll go 2D for my first screening. And if they choose to finaly don't make it 3D I'd be pleased with it too. (Either way, I win!...)

Yes, 3D in Dredd was fantastic. They actually designed a new mini camera to shoot 3D in intimate closeup. Plus the slowmo 3D was an integral part of the plot. I saw it 4 times in 3D and would have seen it a 5th in 2D but there were no 2D screenings sadly. I searched every cinema I could think of and they had no 2D versions. Sad that it may have contributed to it's poor ticket recipets.

Also Avatar, Toy Story 3, Life Of Pi, TT3D and as you said Hugo were fine 3D films that demand to be seen in that format first and foremost. But I want to see 3 new SW films that have the comfortingly familiar feel of the OT not the jarring disconnect of the way the PT looked.

I think the choice should be on offer in equal measure. Star Wars VII for me, is going to be in a proper IMAX cinema in 2D.

See, this is always confusing to me. Why would it be in IMAX? Isn't that an entirely different aspect ratio if it's true IMAX? Star Wars would be a bit off-putting in a non-anamorphic ratio, one of the reason I love The Clone Wars is they animate in 2.35. And if it's not really necessary to get to 4:3 or whatever Imax is, what's the real point of IMAX? Resolution, screen size? I presume it will be shot in 4k (Maybe 8k, though I don't know of any cameras that do 8k) digital for a number of reasons, so there wouldn't be much to gain resolution-wise, right? At lowest estimates, Imax is the equivalent of 5k if I recall. Which leaves screen size, and I think without the other stuff, it's just as much of a gimmick as 3D. Please, explain this to me, because I'm not understanding why people get all excited about IMAX. (Disclaimer: Part of this is I haven't ever live near enough to an IMAX screen to go for anything other than rare occasions).

I realized you were being sarcastic. ;) Not really craving film, just kinda thinking of how odd it is I'll probably not see it again.

^ Screen size is just a gimmick? Oh cool thanks for telling me, I'm gonna go trade in my big flatscreen TV for one of these cheaper models...

;-)

But seriously the bigass VueXtreme size screen is another great way to see movies apart from IMAX (Sound is great too). If I forget to pre-book EpVII about a month in advance at IMAX, then VueXtreme will be the next best option.

Still, I believe VueXtreme is 18mx10m, while the biggest IMAX in the UK is 29mx23m (So pretty much twice the size).

Screen size ALONE can be a gimmick, especially for an over inflated price, like IMAX is, especially if you have to drive to a major city. Obviously, screen size is usually better large. I'm just saying Imax seems like a gimmick for half of the movies people say they would rather see it in IMAX than 3D. It's a 5 dollar upgrade that in the case of many movies, gains you rather little over a quality non-IMAX screen.

IMAX is not a gimmick. If you go to a real IMAX theater, then the screen is huge, and the projection is on 70mm trays. If you're seeing a film shot in IMAX, then the picture is significantly greater than the picture of 35mm film.

Also, even at LIeMAX, the sound is outstanding. I don't know about elsewhere, but the sound at my local theater is shit. IMAX is surround sound, and it's loud, like a movie theater should be.

Plus the seats are nice and comfy and the person in front of you is never in the way of the screen.

I treat IMAX going as something special. A couple times a year, because the closest one to me is about 45 minutes. But the experiences I have there are always outstanding.

Okay, considering the sound and seats, I suppose I can better see why people would go to Imax, even for films that don't take advantage of 70mm film. Similar reasons to why I'd go to a THX theater.

I always get an odd tingle when I get in the theatre and remember that IMAX has REAL ushers (Ask your parents younglings) and a guy introduces the film and asks the audience to turn their devices off and respect each other. You pay double the price but you get alot more than double the screen and a nice experience.

Plus it's cool when they play you a ten minute short from an up and coming movie as a bonus.

That's pretty neat. I don't know where it was specifically, but I remember going to this theater in Indianapolis in 2000 for a Pokémon 2000 showing, and they had this awesome bar in the actual theater where the movie was shown and you could get ice cream and stuff, and they even had intermissions. Would love to go back there someday, though I suspect the theater has closed. I actually asked a friend if knew what it was once since he's from Indianna, and he thought he knew, but I don't think he was able to find out for sure.

I'm still waiting for the hair dryer thing Chewie's dad was using in the HS to be perfected, so I can watch the movies in my head. ;)
