I just started reading the first Star Trek series released by Marvel Comics, and only four issues in (I skipped the first three, BTW), I'm enjoying it a helluvalot more than Gold Key's entire run.
I don't really see how that's really a problem in the examples you listed. If the in-film subtitles are burned in to the film, and the foreign-translated subtitles for non-native viewers are generated in the matte... boom! You have everything.
Also, even if it was a piece of media that didn't have a matte (was the same ratio as the television), it's really not that hard to read subtitles over subtitles. I've had several experiences like that with foreign language media, and it's never been a problem.
I also disagree with your sentiment that home video shouldn't strive to be as close to the theatrical experience as possible. I mean, hell, isn't that part of the reason this site exists?
ALSO... just saw a clip from The Director's Edition, and the subtitles appear perfectly fine there. Certainly not some player-generated, pixellated crap.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Is that the one set right after TMP?

As someone who has tried to read subs over subs it's usually a messy experience.
Yes, this site is about trying to get a particular set of films available to view in as close to their original state as is practically possible.
That would include limited theatrical opportunities for art house cinemas as well as the best possible home cinema presentation but there will always be limits.
I don't expect to see the original certification cards or the original trailers and ads or get a free mint choc ice generated with each viewing at home or have an enormous screen unfold and the room become a massive theatre full of people most of which would be smoking in all but the central aisle.
As I said you could have branching of embedded subs in different languages of the region but that would require restoring every version of an embedded sub for every language and to get a clean hard of hearing sub the option of the picture with no embedded subs.
It would also reduce the resale potential of each disc (which might be attractive to some companies but not so much to others or indeed consumers).
It's easier and cheaper for most companies to just have the clean image and the player generated subs.
They can be coded better to match the original look of the embedded subs but it's something that just isn't going to happen with every film because the demand for that level of detail doesn't balance with the cost of providing it.
It's an entirely different kettle of fish from adding new continuity errors to films that already have them as in the case of the Star Wars blu-rays.

Weren't there several different versions of TMP released? What are they and which is best?
My "Special Longer Version" using letterbox footage from multiple sources. All released versions had been P&S. *Grin*
Snatched! :)
Out of curiosity, between the Special Longer Version and the Director's Cut, is all released TMP material made available, or are there other cuts that include even more stuff. I don't have the patience to go through and catalog these differences myself.
I know TWOK Theatrical and Director's Cuts both still miss some stuff that I'm not even sure how it got out there, like Saavik's half-Romulan heritage, etc.

Got to Season 3 of DS9. This is where the fun begins/it grows the beard.
"The Search" may eve be better than "Best of Both Worlds!" Certainly, it's the only two-parter I've seen where part 2 is better.

Piggy-backing on this as-yet unanswered question, where can one find the additional missing scenes and takes for TWOK? For instance, is there a way to get ahold of the ABC-TV version which has some differences from both the Director's cut and the Theatrical cut.

Also, where does one see the scenes found on this YouTube video? Are they in another cut, or is there an official release that includes them as deleted scenes?

I transferred my off air copy of the ABC broadcast several years ago. Didn't think there was still interest in it, as I thought those scenes were on the DVD extras?
My house is still a mess, otherwise I could go looking for it.
Where were you in '77?
Might be and I just hadn't realized it. Still, I think it'd be cool to see them integrated. Whenever you got the chance to put it up somewhere, I know I'd love to download it. :) Meanwhile, I'll check my Director's Cut DVD for the ABC scenes.
Checked my Director's Cut DVD and I don't see any deleted scenes in the special features, unless they're mixed into the documentaries (which I haven't watched).
Amazon doesn't list any deleted scenes either. I have the original cut on DVD as well as part of the "trilogy," but I don't see any deleted scenes.
I've look at the Blu-ray on Amazon as well, and I don't think there are any alternate scenes.

I'm surprised there hasn't been an official release of the ABC version, but then again, maybe I'm not, as there are several TV versions of other movies not commercially available. I know you're busy and your house is a mess, but when you are able to put it up, I promise I will repay you with 'thank you's in six different languages! ;)
On the Directors Cut the five 'additional scenes' are on the second disc.
They are mostly the original versions of scenes tweaked for the Director's Cut (as much formally deleted material was reworked for the cut) but there are a few more trims and alternate views or takes.

Not on my copy (PAL). I have the 2DVD sets and the only movies containing deleted scenes are 1, 5, Generations, Insurrection and Nemesis
On my copy (PAL) they are.
So maybe I just have a fantastically rare set?
Though mine does match this product description of the NTSC version despite being the PAL version
.
Additional and Deleted Scenes Presented in 2.35:1 Anamorphic Widescreen (kudos Paramount!), these are five scenes from the Theatrical Cut presented in their original edits. They are “Cloud Journey,” “Vulcan And Starfleet,” “Attack On the Enterprise,” “V-Ger Flyover,” and “Wing Walk.” While these are here for die-hards only, fans of the film will be happy to see them in their original form, and if anything reinforce the fact that the new edits are much, much better than the original takes.
Trims This is an 8 minute or so reel consisting of bits and pieces of footage sometimes just looks and movements or lines of dialogue. Again, these are here for the purists and completists only.
Outtakes Again presented in Anamorphic Widescreen, here are some deleted scenes and/or alternate takes of existing scenes that were presented in either the Theatrical Cut or 1983 Extended Version (for Television). The scenes include: “Intruder Transmission,” “Sulu and Ilia #1 & #2,” “Officers Lounge,” “Kirk’s Quarters,” “Attack On The Enterprise,” “A Huge Vessel,” “Kirk Follows Spock,” “Ilia’s Quarters #1 & #2,” and “It’s Creator Is A Machine.” None of these are particularly interesting or noteworthy.
Damned, sorry - I thought you're still talking about TWOK and not ST1 Director's cut. I'm getting blind :-(
Hmmm...I'm confused too, as I am referring to The Wrath of Khan now. I was speaking of The Motion Picture earlier, but now I'm dwelling on the second film. Hope I haven't contributed to the confusion.
Just found this. It's a YouTube video of the ABC version of Kirk and Saavik on the turbolift, which is different from both the theatrical and director's cuts.

Close ups instead of wideshot, and I guess is supposed to imply a little flirting.

Although perhaps this take is flirtier, and the different framing helps with that, I've always thought it was closeups because pan&scan on the original wideshots would be awful, and this take gave them an alternative. TV was 4:3 back then, after all.
You might be right about their reasoning, though I remember watching the theatrical version of TWOK in pan and scan on VHS when I was a kid.
No no no all my fault.
I never realised that the extended version of TWOK was a 'director's cut".
So when I read about not being able to find deleted scenes of a directors cut I thought we were still talking TMP.
It should have been picked up by the fornicator.

I'm halfway through Season 6, and - IMO - the beard has definately developed a lot of gray at this point. I don't think I'm going to stick around to watch it turn white with "Tears of the Prophets" and Season 7.
I think season 6 is one of its best, and, despite some definite missteps in season 7, it's still overall pretty strong (remember that TNG had lost quite a bit of its sheen by season 7 as well) with some really good episodes ("The Siege of AR-558" and "It's Only a Paper Moon" spring immediately to mind, and "Take Me Out to the Holosuite" is perhaps my favorite guilty pleasure) and an amazing 10 episode arc to conclude the series.

Yeah, no reason to be surprised, this happens quite often.
My internet is pretty spotty lately, and upload speed is abominable.
If someone really wants the ABC cut, I'd be happy to snail mail a copy once my house is back in order.

Take Me Out to the Holosuite could have easily been titled Vulcans are dicks. ;)
