In the radio drama, Death Star is merely a project code name, not necessarily the official name. I kind of like thinking of it that way: it's a code name that the Alliance adopted for propaganda purposes. It seems to fit your interpretation perfectly.

Well that's cool. I've listened to the radio drama a couple times, but it's been over 10 years. That little fact must have been kicking around in the back of my mind.

There's really not much point in me bringing any of this up as we never hear civilians talking about the space station and anytime it is mentioned on screen they could just be using the code name (like I said, it was Billy Dee's delivery of "...that DEATH Star..." that got me thinking about this in the first place.) So nowhere to fit any of this into the films. Still, it fits into my own personal cannon quite nicely.
