I was thinking a lot about Bond today, specifically the timeline issue.

The answer is obvious: There is no real, strict continuity. References to previous films can be made whenever it's useful, but in general the filmmakers do not care. Anything beyond this is absurd retcon and against the spirit of the films.

I actually totally agree that you should just take the films as they are and not take them too seriously.  This was really just one of those times where I let my imagination run wild and I think fan theories can, on occasion, be fun to think about.

Skyfall really left me baffled with its Aston Martin. Bond seems to "remember" it and we are meant to think that he's driven it but he can't be the same guy who drove it in the 60s. Or should we just think that it was Bond's first time to drive some 50-year-old car and it happens to be exactly like the one in the other Bond universe? I think Craig's Bond films as a different timeline than the older ones as it was the first reboot, but this just doesn't make sense. It probably shouldn't either, but still.

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

Agents are brainwashed into adopting the Bond persona.

It includes the parents, the Fettes education, the murdered wife etc and obviously false memories of some of the assignments the previous agents who have held the role.

That's why he has the Bondmobile.

So was Diamonds are Forever for about 5 minutes :P

Including the single-worst fight in the entire series. ;)

You can make up any continuity you want, but when the producers started choosing stories at random in the 60's, any and all notion of order went out the window. The character is basically the same, just affected by the time of production and the tone desired.

But why was the DB5 in Skyfail you ask? How does it make sense?

It doesn't. Someone must have thought it would be a cool and immediately recognizable moment and not thought about the implications.

here is another thing that doesn't make sense in the continuity.    If the Casino Royal was a total reboot,  why is M the same as the Brosnan M?  Never understood that.

I refer the honorable gentleman to the answer I gave some posts before.

It's the first for that agent but not for Bond, that agent has to have is brainwashing tested before he can be fully Bondaged.

oh, if you want to say that different people are somehow given the name and memories of James Bond and think they are James Bond,  is the same thing done to Felix Leiter as well?    He has changed his appearance and age more than Bond.   I wonder what goes on in the mind of the latest Leiter?   Right now is African American.   Does he have memories of being white?   Does he have memories of his legs being cut off and his new wife being killed in LTK?

I know its like month old news but is anyone surprised Sam Mendes pulled a JJ Abrams denying he was going to direct bond 24 and now is signed to direct it.

This guy is the new series regular really?

Count me as so not interested in the Next Bond unless some how Mendes and Logan actually make a 007 picture not a thriller of the week where you know what is going to happen before it happens because its painfully obvious and telegraphed.

Craig's Bond got the Aston Martin on his first mission as a double zero in the film "Casino Royale". I would say that is why he remembers it fondly.  Skyfall is presented as taking place years after "CR" and "QoS", so I felt that Bond had equipped it with gadgets and must have used it several times on missions between "QoS" and Skyfall.

The DB5 was the least problem i had with the film.  Bonds House and Batcave were far more awful as was aping the Nolan Batman films.

John Logan thought he was being clever with making the obvious references to the Nolan trilogy, and Javier Bardem is obviously trying to be Heath as Joker in the Dark Knight.  The parody is so obvious its almost comical.

It's actually quite interesting how, ever since Connery left Bond, the franchise has been copying the styles of the popular, mainstream action films of their time; rather than trying to do something new. In some ways it's a shame, but in other ways it's pretty cool, at least to look back in a historical sense. One could kind of see the Bond franchise as a 50 year old constant in the blockbuster marketplace, that at the same time is a chameleon towards the fashion of the time. So if someone wanted to see the progression of the action movie, they need only watch the Bond films.

No, I'd argue that they actually reflected the trends and desires of the times until falling into the trap of being maneuvered into taking on the traits of the competition around LTK, which has all the elements of other 80's action, and certainly more by the Brosnan era, until being consumed by the imitators nowadays.

Deleted rooftop  /London chase scene from "On Her Majesties Secret Service"

I found this very interesting and entertaining.  A YouTube user has made a  reconstruction of the deleted rooftop  /London chase scene from "On Her Majesties Secret Service" using footage from the released version, and combining it with stills taken during the original filming. The video shows us how the missing rooftop / London chase scene would have been presented had it been included in the theatrical release.

I've been watching a lot of Bond on Netflix recently. Originally skipping around, but found myself stuck in the Roger Moore era. I like it a lot, except for the Louisana Sheriff. I cringed the entire time he was on screen, for TWO MOVIES. Was he the director's brother or something?

And he was so annoying in "Superman II" as well.

I would like to see the return of blofeld but not with his older style. I mean they should make Blofeld a new really menacing guy so that means no cats.

I suppose given that McClory is dead that might now be a possibility.  I always liked Telly Savalas best as Blofeld, but to be fair there really isn't much to compare him to as the other times he functions more as a caricature or stereotype rather than an actual threat.

Given the more realistic nature of the Craig films I'm going to guess SPECTRE isn't in the plans for now... oh well, one can hope we get serious villains nonetheless.  I rather liked Javier Bardem's character in Skyfall and think we have a chance of getting compelling villains like him without the personal connections that tied him down (re: M revenge plot.)
