Looks good, really looking forward to hearing more about this transfer and also when the other two movies are done. Especially Empire Strikes Back of course.

MeBeJedi, how long has this taken you so far and when do you expect to be finished with the whole trilogy?

Some screen caps would be awesome, preferrably the more well lit, close up scenes of the human actors, to see what sort of color tones etc have been achieved.

Like Luke and Ben on Tatooine near the destroyed Sandcrawler, Han, Leia, Tarkin screens etc, and anything else you think looks real awesome enough to post.

"(was it done in RGB or YUV?)"

Technically speaking, YUV (HuffyYUV, to be specific). The only "RGB" aspect was when I used VirtualDub to create the 23.976 IVTC video stream, as well as the video-crawl filter (VD drops into RGB mode to make changes, but the source remains YUV at the end.)

"I do not recall even seeing a side flip or a disc change and from what I saw today"

You won't. Vegas is very good about combining/overlapping video and audio. How do you think I made my Millenium Falcon intro. BTW, I found my old ESB intro, and I'll send that to Rik also. I got it off one of the Def. Col. LD's, and it kicks ass - and will look even better with this new transfer process.

"MeBeJedi, how long has this taken you so far and when do you expect to be finished with the whole trilogy?"

Well, it's taken me a year to perfect the process, but technically I can do each film in a week now (I'm including "Darth RealLife" in that equation. ) That being said, even with 700+ GB on my computer, I'm running out of room (total files for ANH alone are 100+GBs), and I wanted to hold onto them for more corrections (glitch removal, anamorphic), so I'm kinda stuck between fixing ANH and staring on ESB. As much as Rik loves the audio/video quality, [Lucas] "I'm still not done with Star Wars" [/Lucas], so it's going to look even better.

Oh, chances are that I won't include the 5.1 audio in the future. I just wanted Riktor to hear it, since I worked so hard on it (unless, of course, everyone clamors for it.)

Rik and I are hammering out details for an XVID version, to give you guys a taste of what it looks like (but he needs to return my PM. )

I'm very impressed by your work MeBeJedi! but why don't you add a credit part in your dvd menu instead of changing the "directed by George Lucas" text at the end?

Or even better, a bonus part where you show a video comparison between the LD Master you encode and the final video after you tweak the colors and removed the glitches.

You could even add a george lucas quote like the one about movie colorization defore the menu appears.

"why don't you add a credit part in your dvd menu instead of changing the "directed by George Lucas" text at the end?"

1) The "menu" idea is a good one. Thanks.
2) I wanted to see if I could erase his name and replace it with mine. A "technical exercise", much like the DVDs themselves.
3) Fuck Lucas. According to him, these versions "don't exist" to him anymore. Therefore, I have struck my flag into this new, unclaimed territory.

"Or even better, a bonus part where you show a video comparison between the LD Master you encode and the final video after you tweak the colors and removed the glitches."

Another good idea. That's something I might put on the supplement disc.

Oh, here are some screencaps. Best I can do on short notice (I can never get them to look as good as the video.) As you can see (better in the first pic), you can see Leia's shoulders through her dress (the trash compactor scene ROCKS! )

Rikter: I'd love to see a picture of your DVD rack, or at least the Star Wars portion of it. Your wife must have the patience of a monk.

MeBeJedi: Damn, I didn't realize how much you've put into these discs. I tried the same thing with my Definitive Set for a couple months, but I just couldn't get the quality I wanted, not even to the level of DrG(onzo)'s Anamorphic set. Some of the things you did (29.97fps video to 23.96fps film for instance) I hadn't gotten around to trying before I gave up. HDD space was an issue, since I was limited to 140GB. During a hard financial period, I had to get rid of my original LD player (Pioneer CLD-D505) and the Definitive Set on eBay. Later, I ended up snagging a Mitsubishi clone of the CLD-D704, which is probably the 4th or 5th best LD player made, and certainly the best American, non-Elite. I envy those who have the HLDs, those are some serious machines, excellent quality. Oh, and if you ever need a guinea pig for the set, I'd be willing to help out. Seriously! I've got a couple of systems to try it out on, from a regular old 27" analog set with stereo speakers to an HTPC for upconverting video, calibrated digital projector at 110" , and a nice 7.1 surround system, also calibrated.

Again, I congratulate you on your efforts.

ETA: Niiiice. Did you have to any work on color balance, or was the Faces Set that good to begin with? These encodes look less washed out than the Definitive versions/

The 23.976 IVTC process is very simple, once you wrap your brain around what you are actually doing. As you can see, it was definitely worth the effort. High-motion spaceship fly-bys ROCK!

My original uncompessed RGB capture of ANH came out at 180GBs. It would have eaten your hard drive and your cat. Luckily, two things happened. 1) Costco had sales on Maxtor hard drives ($130 for 160GB, $180 for 250 GB), and 2) laserman introduced me to the wonderful word of HuffyUV, which cut my capture size in half! (with better color fidelity as well) Once I was able to make captures with no dropped frames (which took a lot of tinkering), everything else was pretty straightforward.

"ETA: Niiiice. Did you have to any work on color balance, or was the Faces Set that good to begin with? These encodes look less washed out than the Definitive versions/"

Honestly, it didn't take much. I keep screwing around with brightness/contrast, and finally realized that just dropping the brightness made the best improvement. As you can see from my earlier pic, my DVD capture was darker than my AVI master. My biggest goal was to get "space" as dark as possible, without losing too many stars. Everything else just kinda fell into place once I found that right balance.

People can "ooh and aah" all they want about the Def. Col. (which I also have), but the Faces set is no small potatoes by any stretch. You won't find one website that gives the CAV process a huge visual advantage over the CLV process in anything other than viewing individual frames, at least in regards to the Star Wars films. Believe me, I've looked. (BTW, the last third of the Faces set is in CAV. You know, the "armada" scene? )

I really do not care about the 5.1 - the other audio options are fine for me!
Your work looks very impressive, MBJ and I can not wait to see it for myself.
Oh, and the addition of your name at the end looks very nice, but, (and this is my opinion), I would personally rather it be unchanged. I mean, the goal seems to be getting the OT in the best quality possible - and to me, that includes the credits. I know, I know, that might be pretty anal sounding, but it is just my opinion. If you choose to leave your name in though, that would definitely not prevent me from enjoying the film! Thanks for all your work on this! I am dying to see it!

I agree with the sentiments expressed thus far. MeBeJedit, you have done a great job but I think giving credit to yourself for the work would be better suited outside of the movie.

You know what might be nice.... how about a slideshow with text and possibly screen shots illustrating the steps used to create these DVDs.... maybe use this as a way of pointing out how if a "fanboy" can do this with VirtualDub and Vegas Video a millionaire like George Lucas with ILM at his ever beckon call should have no problem producing a set of DVDs with the original "theatrical" cuts of the films to please us "free thinkers" as he so foundly calls us.

Keep up the good....er, I mean "great" work... I as well as the rest of us are looking forward to this set

Oh and one more thing.... if there is no sacrifice in quality to have the 5.1 version of the audion track on there then please include that as well... we have all heard really bad 5.1 "conversions" and would love to hear what you have done.

Ironically, I tried to make my 5.1 as faithful to the PCM track as possible. I can only guess what others have tried to do to "spice up" their AC3s.

That being said, I've considered using simple volume fades in the rear speakers to create the appearance of "steering", but it would be subtle at best.

Oh, I've finally found some decent Star Wars fonts, so those menu screencaps will be undergoing some changes (including adding my username. )

Wow. I want this set. Since I had big problems burning the Balance of the Force Xvid torrent (squished anamorphic video, sometimes-jerky video) I'm wary of getting this as a torrent if you're not going to post VOB files. If you don't I'll get the Xvid, watch it and decide if it's worth buying to replace my Dr. Gonzo set. Saying of which, how much are you going to charge for the trilogy set when you're done, MBJ?

I want the MEBEJEDI dvds!

Those look great. I have the TR47 edition and the Dr Gonzo Anamorphics, and have been ver pleased with both of them. I did a quick look, but couldnt tell.. are the MEBEJEDI DVDs anamorphic?

Also, Im not sure what other supplement are out there, but I have THX WOW! Laserdisc, and the official THX Ultimate Demo DVD. The Wow demo is on there in anamorphic and with DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1. It also includes the soundtrack feature, wich has some scenes from Episode IV using location sound. Those could make great additions to these "ultimate" sets you guys offer.

Hmm...I really like it, but I'm not too keen on "MeBeJedi's New Hope" up there. I'd suggest something along these lines:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v58/chainsawash/MBJ.jpg

I added MAIN MENU in there because if you don't have one you definitely should. Default-selection PLAY MOVIE, next CHAPTER SELECTION, next AUDIO SETUP, and finally COMMENTARY which takes you to the Commentary menu. And I don't think the text is overused, and the STAR WARS logo I used is indeed a font if a font is needed (SF Distant Galaxy Symbols, the number 8 is the vintage STAR WARS logo, the regular letters are Aurebesh in lowercase and Naboo writing in uppercase. SF Distant Galaxy isn't a particularly good Star Wars font, the best for that is Star Jedi, but the Symbols variation is extremely useful).

Of course, it's your baby, and do with it as you please. Personally (and this is another suggestion, do what you want {as if you wouldn't}) I'd make more "normal" chapter names, but that's just me, everyone else seems to like them. I like chapters without names personally and I don't see the point of chapter inserts.

I like the idea but it looks real busy with all the aurabesh - I love the MeBaeJedi NEW HOPE logo

I love the MeBeJedi NEW HOPE logo too. I love the chapters names.

But you should do something about all the aurabesh. If you don't want want to remove it then change the color of the font (grayer?) and reduce its size, because it makes the whole screen difficult to read.

"are the MEBEJEDI DVDs anamorphic?"

Not yet, but I'm already working on it.

"I added MAIN MENU in there because if you don't have one you definitely should."

There is no "main menu", as much as there are chapter menus and commentary menus (the audio switches automatically.) IF I leave the 5.1 in, it will probably remain selectable by pressing the audio button. I have a feeling that most people will eventually just listen to it in PCM anyways. The only real advantage the DD track has over the PCM track is file size.

"I'd make more "normal" chapter names, but that's just me, everyone else seems to like them."

It's still a WIP, and I'll probably rename some of them, but it made my work a little more amusing to see those chapter names.

"My motto is: "Less is more" and that´s the advice I´m giving MeBeJedi."

LOL. Yeah, I knew there was too much going on in that menu, but it looks kinda cool. It's as easy to take off as it was to put on. That being said, if someone wants a custom order in Aurebesh...

"I love the MeBeJedi NEW HOPE logo too."

Me too. That will stay.
