One of the biggest advantages Robot Chicken has over Family Guy is that it doesn't focus on the same set of asshole characters all the time; it focuses on different assholes at different times episode-to-episode =P

I see your winky, but I'm keeping my serious hat on this time, so pardon me if I sound stubborn (well, I am).

Isn't this view of culture kinda... I dunno, outdated, for lack of a better term? Nowadays culture is global. Stuff goes on the internet, everybody sees it. I think one should be prepared for that.

No, I mostly agree with you. It is kind of lazy. Sounds like they made an effort, but an extremely minimal one. But, even if everything is global now, they are appealing to an American audience. It is the American Cartoon Network that is paying for the show. And even the Italian speakers who are watching the show via venues where the money gets back to the creators, how many of them are going to say, "You know what, they couldn't bother to get their Italian right for this minute and a half segment of one episode so I am finished!" In other words, what is really at stake for them by not going the extra mile for their Italian viewers?

However, culture being global? How so? Just because everyone around the world buys up and enjoys silly American entertainment, doesn't mean it needs to cater to a worldwide audience. You're a really well informed guy, very intelligent, and clearly very well educated. You're English puts a lot of first English speakers that post on this forum to shame. Hell, your English probably puts my English to shame, but I am sure there are still plenty of Robot Chicken jokes that go over your head, and probably much more so for the general Italian population. It's made by guys who grew up in the eighties and nineties, and most of the jokes are pop culture jokes relating to that era and appealing to guys in that age range. Some of the stuff they reference I feel like I am even too young to get, some of the shows they pull jokes from came on when I was just a little too young to have appreciated them. It is the stuff my slightly older cousins were really into.

I really appreciate that about the show. These guys are sticking to the stuff they know and the stuff they are/were into or grew up around, and making jokes and references aimed at their generation.

(I'm sorry if I screwed that up. Trying to say "No problem. Also recently there was a show that showed ASL badly". My Italian has gotten rusty.)

"Non c'è problema. Inoltre, di recente c'è stato uno show televisivo che ha malamente mostrato l' ASL."

Don't worry about it, you're excused because:

  1. You're not a professional translator (as far as I know)
  2. Italian is a pretty difficult language

It was some kind of comedy sketch. What happened was during an emergency there was an announcement with some official. Some comedy show decided to parody the ASL interpreter standing alongside him during the announcement. Only they apparently didn't use any signs at all. Just random hand movements. I didn't see it but there was quite an uproar in the Deaf community about it.

I just saw it. It's this one, isn't it?

Now, here's something you may not agree with. I think SNL got in trouble not because of the concept, but because they were parodying real people in it, and mostly, I think, this is an issue of political correctness.

Marlee Matlin tweeted:

Imagine if a show started making fun of Spanish (using fake Spanish) or Japanese. Do you think they'd actually get away with it? Uh, no...

Not today, no, Marlee. Because today comedians can't do shit without being called insensitive assholes. I think everything has a potential to be made fun of, nothing should be "sacred", otherwise you lose the entire point of comedy.

The skit isn't hilarious, but not entirely unfunny. If it has a fault, it's going on for too damn long. It's not making fun of ASL, it's making fun of what people with normal hearing see when they see ASL. It's making fun of ignorance and false perception. If you actually skip ahead, it's making fun of NJ, and white people in general!

Besides, we already did this kind of stuff way back in the 80's:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbLj0EN7YD4

You see the difference, don't you? I'm ok with this stuff, it's juvenile, and it's intended to be wrong. If you find it funny or not, that's up to you.

I'm actually ok with this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JhuOicPFZY

I'm not ok with half assed jobs, where they're actually supposed to represent a language, but they come nowhere close to it.

Like this case:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_Ship_(2002_film)

The movie is set on an italian ocean liner, where all the service signs are written in mangled italian. This is a feature film, you're destroying my suspension of desbelief by distracting me with your shitty translations!!

ok, I've gotta admit, that's their target.

I wouldn't go as far as giving up on the show, no. All I know is, it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth whenever I see stuff like that.

However, culture being global? How so? Just because everyone around the world buys up and enjoys silly American entertainment, doesn't mean it needs to cater to a worldwide audience. You're a really well informed guy, very intelligent, and clearly very well educated.

Oh, you *giggle*

To be serious, I'm flattered, but I think of myself like a chess player that knows how to move the pieces, but has no playing strategy. In other words, I may know a language my parents never spoke to me, but I'm still as ignorant as a mule.

You're English puts a lot of first English speakers that post on this forum to shame. Hell, your English probably puts my English to shame,

Tell me the truth, now. You wrote that on purpose. ;)

Agree on all of these. Especially on the jokes flying above my head.

SNL's short lived competitor Fridays had a recurring sketch with Spanish radio DJ who wasn't exactly speaking the actual language...

I wish I could obtain the complete episode hosted by Shatner.

Back to Trek - does anybody know the chronological order for all Star Trek TV shows, novels, comic books and movies ?

I found this site : http://thestartrekchronologyproject.blogspot.com . While it's pretty good ( I found only a very few errors ), it covers only the TV shows and movies. I haven't read any book (Star Trek book of course, I did read "other" books of course :-) ) and the only comic books I read were those based on JJ's reboot.

I'd like to read the books and comics but first I'd need to know where on the timeline do they belong.

Yes, I know I'm a nerd :-)

I would imagine such a thing would be implausible. For example, the book series I own takes place post-Generations/flashbacks, pre-TNG/flashbacks/alternate timeline, or in the Nexus. I wouldn't know where to begin to place them on a timeline. Besides the fact that those books contradict other books taking place in the same timeframe...

We give the SW EU crap, but you have to give them credit for trying to keep things straight. The ST EU is nice because each writer has a ton of free will, but there was no continuity until recently.

HOWEVER, since the series have ended, some editor has tried to keep the books straight and more in vein with the SW EU. The issue? It's still complicated as heck.

Ti ringràzio!
You're correct I'm just trying to learn the language. It's my 5th language. Currently just hammering in vocab. Going to get back to hammering in grammar soon.

Well either way I just felt it was relevant. I suppose it also annoys me since ASL is my second language.

Anyways, um....

I know of no such list with the books and extra material included but I do know of an alternative list for the chronological order.

Hmm. Maybe Seth McFarlane's sense of parody (pisstaking) is more attuned to to those who understand it.

Tell me Frink, did you GET Blazing Saddles? Or did you find it overly racist? And if you did GET it, explain why.

Author
Time

Racist?  Don't try to make this a political issue when it's nothing of the sort.

Blazing Saddles isn't terribly funny either, in my opinion.  I like much of Spaceballs, but for the most part I find Mel Brooks unfunny as well.

It's not about GETTING it.  It's about a style of humor that I really don't enjoy.  I understand it fine, I just don't think it's funny.

Author

Yeah, that is just a bit of a leading question.   You can't just like it or not like it on its own terms.  Your only options are that you get it or think it's racist. =P

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Picture some skit on italian television that tries to parody a Broadway show, and has all the characters speaking and singing in incredibly mangled english. Wouldn't you be baffled, at least?
